Min/Max 3.x / List of Questions for an E6 Artificer
« on: March 24, 2012, 04:05:46 AM »
1. My swim/tumble/attack/etc checks are abysmal anyway, so I want to get a gigantic shield. Any obscure Tower Shield+++ out there?
2. Going a golemancer route, focusing on Effigies and Elder Eidolons. Any creatures you recommend? (I hear good things about the Rukanyr)
3. The classic Bane infusion+crossbow is off the table for me (I have a horrid attack bonus). Would I need to have my arbalester activate a magic item that has the infusion to buff itself?
4. Is there a way to affix permanent effects to a golem? They don't have normal bodies, so body slots would get wonky. I assume the rules in MIC about adding 50% to the cost to add another effect doesn't apply to constructs.
5. What items have you created in previous low-level games that you absolutely loved? Best I've heard so far was At-Will Launch Bolt/Item.
6. Disregarding the fluff about Gnomes(since this isn't an eberron game), How difficult to pull off is Elemental binding on your own?
7. Any obscure warforged components I should know about?

Thank you all for your time and input in advance!

I've posted this on a thread at the gitp boards, as yesterday I had a burst of inspiration, so I'll repost that here, too.

As for rogues, tough that could work for a lot of other classes, an idea is to give it a class ability, something akin to "always prepared". May be a bit too much metagaming, but other than that, it sounds fun.

It goes like this, when the rogue can spend some of his wealth(ahem, city visits, ye olde wandering magic shoppe too), he can invest some of it on his "always prepared" feature. That should be limited by his rogue levels, but I'm not too sure on the amount. Then, when adventuring, you can use that to "buy" stuff that would be handy.
Let's say your cleric got negative levels and someone(Or something) turned your wizard into stone, you could then, as you're always prepared, pull a scroll of stone to flesh out of your pocket and UMD that. There should be a limit on the number of items you can pull out with this trick, tough.

Sounds like fun, especially with all those situational mundane equipment that usually never sees the light of the day. Still, as I said, that'd be quite a bit of metagaming, but I like this feel of a guy who is ready for everything. Even if his player wasn't really ready for that.

That was written at 5 AM, just before going to sleep, so if anything is too off, please tell.

In Dragon Magazine, one of the Wedded to History feats allows this. You have X gold worth of miscellaneous items that you can pull from nowhere because you "had them in advance"

I love Rune Circles myself but the fact that they have to be carved into stone, and they can't be moved only makes them useful for games where the party is going to have a permanent base of operations or if you wanted to make a philanthropic character that embedded useful circles in each town they go to.

That's actually pretty awesome. This character is going to "run home to craft" every time I have to step in as the DM, so we'll have a base to work from.

I'd rather avoid Psionics this time around. Thanks though!

What about some funny items? My best one so far has been making a packmate homunculus out of a foldable boat.

I've already read the Artificer guides, so I'm not looking for the tried and true feats. I'm looking for some obscure, random item creation feats since I have effectively unlimited feats to work with, and I'm going to be burning most of them on improved DR (warforged DR ftw)

There are spells that give immunity to criticals... can't recall the name though. You're artificer, so... yeah

Living Undeath in SC

While it does technically do the job, it also gives me a -2 to my UMD checks. I'll keep it in mind.

Unfortunately, the race and class are set in stone. I only have post-creation resources to work with.

Playing a dustform Warforged Artificer (don't ask) in E6. If I take a critical hit from a bludgeoning weapon I have to make a will save of 10+damage or die instantly.

The good news: We are using the vitality and wound point system, meaning crits don't do extra damage.

The bad news: Will saves are hard to pump in E6.

The terrible: Although warforged can become immune to crits, I don't qualify for the feat because of my pathetic BAB.

My best solution so far: STAY AWAY FROM THE BAD GUYS.

Seconding. I'm going to be playing D&D at a restaurant next week, and the more I can fit on my phone, the better.

Is this a specific challenge of making the zombie survival game, or is this 'make a post with a set of game rules that provide a solid and interesting game' challenge?

The latter. I'll edit the starting post with clearer information and move my game to my second post.

Other Games / Anima: Beyond Fantasy
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:20:02 PM »
I was at M:TG Worlds in SF yesterday and I found some guys playing Anima: Beyond Fantasy. I didn't get to stay (my match was starting) but the game looked interesting. Have any of you played it? What should I expect?

*reads core book while waiting for a response*

I prefer to have the players not tell each other their stats. That way you don't know the skills of your allies/enemies.

I just imagined a druid using his bubble to initiate 1v1 fights with people in the style of yu-gi-oh's spirit duels.

And do you get upset and blame the DM when your sudden yet inevitable character death occurs? If you do, you are a basket weaver. If not, you're just a masochist.

Guess I'm a masochist then for enjoying a hard fought battle, regardless of the outcome.

It's not about the victory, it's about the struggle and enjoying the experience. Unless you are playing with tier 2+ as the standard you create challanges by, then tiers 3-4 can function just fine. The only time function is ever seriously in question is when you drop below 4.

Anything 4 down is defined by repeated failure. Now 3 can work... as long as you don't mess it up. Going sword and board is messing it up. I've said this before, and I will say it again.

See the following:

Quote from: JaronK's Tier List
Tier 4: Capable of doing one thing quite well, but often useless when encounters require other areas of expertise, or capable of doing many things to a reasonable degree of competance without truly shining.

Emphasis mine. You CAN take a tier 3 class and afford to knock it down a tier through inferior weapon choice.

Cold Immunity

A creature with cold immunity never takes cold damage. It has vulnerability to fire, which means it takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from fire, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

Looks like immunities don't negate saves. Go for the classic +saves then.

EDIT:

...requiring the wearer to remove the armor and thaw it (this can also be done more quickly if the wearer is willing to be the target of a fire-based spell that does at least as much damage as the cold-based attack did).

If you have immunity to cold any fire based spell (even if it deals 0 damage) would thaw your armor. Get the [Fire] subtype on something.

Factotum, Wizard, Warblade chose 2.

An entire chapter can be different combinations that do Corpse/Caster/BSF

Having a precision damage build come online at level 15 is like being 60 minutes late for a 1 hour meeting. You missed everything. You're late.

First one is a casual, one-trick pony build any novice could make at any table and be accepted. Late arrival is the unfortunate consequence of crazy BAB requirements for Bounding Assault and nothing granting Skirmish with Full BAB except a PrC that requires it to begin with.

That's the problem I'm afraid. Casual and non caster are like oil and water. They don't mix. But that's part of the problem with Spring Attack and similar. You lose damage by losing attacks, and don't really gain anything for it. There's pretty much nothing they do that Travel Devotion + Flyby Attack doesn't do much better and cheaper. The main problem though is only coming into its own right around the time where its thing stops working entirely.

Quote
Second one is designed to follow the same principles as the first while not being a one-trick pony (and thus, better playability before the main trick), though it's still strongest when precision damage applies.

But it's Spring Attack...the most you can really do is make it suck less.

The second one is better. I'm not familiar with every component of it so I won't comment in depth. Still, you already know this so I am preaching to the choir.

Moon: They're not dying because of [basket weaver argument]. They're dying (or at least not helping) because their numbers are too low to hit the averages. In other words, they don't hit the baseline. The impartial baseline, that you can't blame others for, so stop trying to blame others for your own shortcomings.

And that means that at level 5 you might very well be taking on the Ogre Brothers, or a Manticore or something. And you're supposed to easily deal with them, so if they easily deal with you instead that's a problem with you.

Is that you Sunic? It sure sounds like Sunic.

I know you will probably call "basketweaver" on me for this, but it stands as a fact regardless. I enjoy playing games where I'm horribly outclassed. I play arkham horror for example, never expecting to win, just to fight. My FAVORITE character in D&D is a combination of 1h duelist and sword n board (depending on the situation). YEAH, he sucks compared to the charger. YEAH, he sucks compared to just about everything,  but guess what? Through ridiculous amounts of optimization I get him to meet par, even though the same tricks would bring the 2h user much farther.

It's not about the victory, it's about the struggle and enjoying the experience. Unless you are playing with tier 2+ as the standard you create challanges by, then tiers 3-4 can function just fine. The only time function is ever seriously in question is when you drop below 4.
