Grimacing, Kaleidoscope pushes off of empty air and vaults the wall again, taking off down a side street t put distance between herself and the facility. Maybe her new friend will ease up if they think she's fleeing.

Kaleidoscope

Distance seems to help.  The strange sensation doesn't recur, but she's nowhere nearer to getting into the building.

After what feels like a long enough time, Kaleidoscope decides to take another stab at the wall, from a corner this time. Once again she jogs over the wall, avoiding those cameras on the ground she's found - but this time, instead of landing on the lawn, she keeps moving up to the roof and drops down into the top floor.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 4th Floor - Unknown Room

The roof is oddly shaped, with the center of it consisting of a circular ceramic platform divided across the middle, as well as burned craters all over. Passing through the roof, Kaleidoscope emerges in a dark room, lit only by glimmers of light from blinking indicators and a streamer of daylight leaking in through a crack in the ceiling. The room feels cool, with the hum of machines running, but it doesn't seem very large.

Jamming the binoculars back into his pocket, Horizon drums his fingers on the edge of the roof thoughtfully. If there aren't any workers on the twelfth floor, it might be possible to get inside for a closer look by circling around to the intact half of the building and entering through the roof. He peers over the edge, watching the workers below for a while before taking off in a long, winding route around the construction zone that favors the higher rooftops, since fewer people are likely to look up that far.

Horizon

Peering down as he approaches Adams Complex, it seems the scaffolding work extends all around the building. Likely the damage is extensive enough that even the intact side must be under severe strain. Indeed, he could sense counterweights being steadily moved up the building on the less damaged side.

Kaleidoscope wastes no time in reaching for her flashlight and flicking it on, passing it around the room once before moving on to the next through the wall, following the exterior wall to her right, where she repeats the procedure. She continues to keep moving around and then inward to get a quick lay of the land of the top floor before she moves on.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 4th Floor

The outer perimeter of the building on the top floor seems to be of four main types. The chemistry labs to the back of the building are a charred mess, with the sky visible through a hole in the ceiling, and visible holes torn into the walls and floor. It's probably contaminated with all sorts of toxic substances, particularly given that some kind of explosive chain reaction has occurred in the lab itself, while sticky looking stains and puddles are everywhere. The right side of the building where she first dropped in fares somewhat better, quietly humming banks of computer software, and ailing air conditioning, though without visible terminals, and oddly split into multiple smaller rooms. The left side of the building meanwhile seems to some kind of storeroom, with charred remains of cardboard boxes, along with melted circuitry and crisped documents. The front side seems to be mainly offices, desks laid out haphazardly with a computer each, as well as papers and notebooks lying all over. The lifts seem to stop here from the ground floor, with no direct access to the other rooms.

Before investigating the central area however, Kaleidoscope notices a memo on most of the tables that looks recent, "Apparatus XFM-0042 is in operation. Do not enter test area while apparatus is in operation. Authorization codes for central area access revoked for all staff below Class 2. Form M-DCC-1 must be filled before entry into test area and submitted in triplicate to HR." Strange.

The memo doesn't bode terribly well, but Kaleidoscope hops on into the central area for a peek anyway. What's the odds of it being able to hurt her, anyway?

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 4th Floor

The wall to the central section seems to be an inch of solid metal behind the plaster. Then Kaleidoscope's head starts tingling as she phases through and gets a glimpse of Apparatus XFM-0042 in action. Blue-white fire fills her eyes.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 3rd-4th Floor - Test Area

The radiating energy seems to penetrate even her immaterial form, resulting in a bone deep ache and causing Kaleidoscope's mind to wobble. The blinding arcs outlines something spherical, and squinting against the glare, she could make out two small and one large hoop, positioned to outline a crude sphere and held in place by ceramic supports. The entire process is strangely silent.

With an actual curse this time, Kaleidoscope flinches back and drops down a floor, outside the central testing room. Her thoughts are disjointed, but the pain helps. Radiation, the so-called apparatus running, nobody in the building to pay attention to it, it actually can hurt her. She staggers. There's got to be a breaker box or a switch for it.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 3rd Floor - Skunkworks

The pain eases slightly, as Kaleidoscope gets her bearings. This room seems to be a large workshop of some kind, half assembled pylons and mechanisms  neatly stacked, with boxes of parts, as well as large machines with an alarming array of grinders, drills and cutters. Thick cables run along the walls, though nothing leading directly into the testing area that she could tell.

Doesn't look like a place that would have a switch. Slowly, testing the burns she took, Kaleidoscope checks over the room and makes to do a round trip around the floor, looking for a door or something like that to the testing room. If there's a power switch for it, it would have to be near an entrance. And there's no way it would be inside the testing room - judging from what she felt, it would just melt there.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 3rd Floor

Her head clearing up as she manages to get in focus, Kaleidoscope explores the third floor. The front side appears to be dominated by more of the large machinery, as well as lifts. The back meanwhile seems to be some kind of lab, formerly clean and sealed spaces now with a thin layer of soot, and the ceiling is alarmingly spider-webbed with cracks. Here she finds computer consoles, and more importantly, a largely intact ring binder labeled "Start up and shut down procedures for test equipment.". It has a certain resemblance to a dictionary in size.

The language of the contents are highly technical, but it doesn't take any particular skill to find the five page section for 'XFM-0042', described as the prototype for the X series flow modulation. Skipping past the operating instructions to the shut down steps before they put her to sleep, the documents describe the need to destabilize the harmonics of the containment field through timed changes to the ring frequencies in order to cut off the arc cycling in the core, followed by a gradual stepping down of the power. A footnote declares that in the event of power failure, backup generators could sustain the containment field for a maximum of twelve hours, during which the entire shut down process should be completed. Flipping over to the generator and power supply maintenance section, she finds that the main circuit breaker should be on the ground floor, and the generators are housed in the basement.

The way the document keeps describing the device as some kind of containment field is somewhat worrying. On the other hand the console next to the binder should be the controller for all this.

No help for it. Crossing into the open is a bad idea, but running into the building unprepared for what might be inside - not even knowing the layout - would be a worse one. Horizon hops in a floating arc over to a nearby rooftop, landing in a sprinter's crouch before taking off explosively and leaping as fast as he can manage into the thirteenth floor.

Horizon - Over the top

Horizon's takeoff was perfect, as was his destination, a broken window pane. His landing however, leaves must to be desired as he clips some of the remaining glass and dislodge a pane. There is shattering sound far below.

As for where he landed, looking about, the surroundings seem to be some kind of office, neatly arranged cubicles, cabinets full of files and a computer on every desk, except for one unfortunate unit which took the brunt of some kind of energy attack and gives off the smell of burnt plastic.

Horizon freezes, straining to hear any shouting from the ground below. "Oh jeez. I hope you were all wearing hard hats," he mutters to himself. Slowly, he straightens up and brushes himself off before glancing around the office with interest, eyes lingering on the burned computer. Cubicles and workstations mean the theft-worthy items aren't likely to be around here - more probably, they're in the CEO's office - but there could be stuff around here that's valuable to the right bidder. He makes a quick circuit of the floor before looking for the stairs or elevator, as well as possibly a floor directory that might narrow down his search.

Horizon - Adams Complex 13th floor - Hodgeson & Co Legal Services

There seems to be no shouting from below, but the noise level certainly went up.

The office seems to be some kind of legal advisors, with about a quarter of the floor taken up by cubicles and another quarter being private offices and meeting rooms. The office seems to have taken relatively little damage, though a slight tremor runs through the floor every so often. Horizon's exploration of the floor is soon stymied by the office doors however. What should lead to the lift lobby seem to be securely locked, as does the private offices, and a cursory search fails to turn up any keys left lying around.

Horizon sighs deeply before reaching out and touching the lock plate on the door to the lift lobby, forcing it sharply outward just like he did at the museum yesterday. Someone down below might hear, but something that might be put down to the damage from the fight would be much preferable to going out a window and being spotted again.
