Horizon - Adams Complex 13th floor - Lobby

The door snaps open with a sharp crack, louder than he would have liked, leaving the lock and handle still fixed to the wall but the door hanging open. A surprisingly solid lock, but pointless when attached to a door this flimsy. No alarm blares however, the power must be out.

Outside is a plain tiled, dark lift lobby with a pair of decorative plants and another door facing directly opposite, with the sign "Couler Employment Agency", while the door he just broke had "Hodgeson & Co Legal Services" on it. The lifts, to no surprise, are out of service, but the fire escape shouldn't be a problem.

Before the door stops moving, Horizon's out in the hall, moving for the fire escape with a muffled curse. Nothing much to do now but hunt for the right floor as quietly and quickly as possible. Maybe he'll be lucky and they'll just think it's the building settling. And maybe when Pyrebird breaks out of jail she'll just want to apologize to me about the whole thing and we'll go out for ice cream. Leaping through the center of the stairwell instead of taking the stairs like a normal person, Horizon makes for a floor that recognizably belongs to Sigma Sync.

Horizon - Adams Complex 12th floor - Lobby

In a single hop he finds himself in the lift lobby for the 12th floor, the tiles badly cracked, with shards of glass all over the floor, and a streak of some crystalline material where a transformative blast attack had penetrated all the way through the building. This floor is occupied by four different offices, with Sigma Sync's office door a futuristic looking gleaming steel panel, marred by a fist sized hole where it became more of the powdery crystals.

Then Horizon heard an explosion inside his head, resolving painfully into words. "This is a restricted area. Your continued presence in this building is  illegal entry and a hazard to structural integrity. Resist and you will be removed by force."

Horizon claps his hands to his ears - or tries to, momentarily forgetting the helmet's in the way. He shakes his head vigorously to clear it. If someone else is manning the building, it's probably time to go...but if he's going to exit, it might as well be through the offices he came to visit, right? Abandoning any pretenses of subtlety, he dashes across to the door to the Sigma Sync offices as though panicking at the sudden attack, another surge of gravity wresting it out of its frame.

Horizon - Adams Complex 12th floor - Sigma Sync

The door collapses with ease, with most of it's substance already worn away. On the other side, the office looks like a war zone, with the outer walls missing entirely in places and the floor opening into the floor below like a canyon, with desks and ruined computers littered below.

"Tsk, damned kid. I REPEAT, STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND EXIT THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY."

Horizon stumbles, catching himself on one hand before hitting the ground hard. "What the hell do you think I'm trying to do? Stop shouting unless you want me to topple out a window, you jerk!" he shouts at no one in particular, wobbling to his feet and crossing the office unsteadily to a convenient window.

Horizon - Adams Complex 12th floor - Sigma Sync

While the office seems like a lost cause at first sight, Horizon identifies  two particularly well furnished looking offices which may have the more important materials still in them, if they had the time to dig through the damage. Since those rooms only suffered minor damage from being tilted and punctured by needle beams, there should be plenty to find. As for the chasm that used to be the office floor ahead, a small grey safe looks buried in the rubble directly ahead and one floor down. Once the workers get to this floor it'd probably be found when they clear out the junk.

His outburst seems to arouse a moment of silence, followed by a softer voice, still in his skull, "You have one minute. The nearest opening is directly ahead of you, so make whatever preparations you need for flight in that time. We don't have time to deal with this any more than you want to be arrested. "

Horizon exhales sharply, nodding as he takes a moment to catch his breath. Rolling his shoulders, he steps off the ledge and drops down to the rubble, landing in a runner's crouch as though preparing himself. A grin returning beneath his helmet, he dashes forward, slapping one hand to the safe as he goes so that it sticks to his hand. As he hurls himself forward out of the break in the wall, a surge of gravity violently yanks him off into the distance, hopefully well beyond the reach of the annoying Special with the booming voice.

Horizon - Skywards

"And stay out!"

The echoes follow him a fair distance, before he lands on the top of a distant building, having attracted a number of curious stares but none curious enough to actually give chase. Seems to have gotten away with his skin intact, though his ears are still ringing from the shouts. The safe appears to be solid enough, the outer surface scratched and dented, but the keyhole remains open and the dial turns smoothly enough.

There is a distant rumble of thunder, and the wind picks up slightly.

Horizon heaves a deep sigh of relief, flopping back onto his back and just staring up at the sky for a little while as the ringing in his ears starts to die away. A little unsteadily, he pulls his phone out of his pocket and fumbles out a text message to his partner, not even bothering to capitalize: made new friend. very loud. got away safe, and also safe. c you soon.

There, nice and subtle. Even if someone had tapped his phone, it's a pretty safe bet that they're the only two who even know about the C-Hole, let alone its name. Horizon hauls himself up to his feet, grimacing at the sky. Might as well try to make it to their hideout before the rain hits. Scooping up the safe, he sets off across the city skyline toward the abandoned mine.

EARLIER AND TOTALLY NOT A RETCON

Horizon's text message reaches Kaleidoscope's phone just as she's taking a break to take another shot at the building. Since she's just waiting anyway, she takes the opportunity to send a quick reply. Trouble with a know it all. Might take a while.

Present

Hooking the folder under her arm, Kaleidoscope forgoes going straight for the breakers in favor of doing a quick tour of the floors in between as she did with the top floor, taking note of places that look like they have papers or other potential valuables in them.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 3rd Floor - Exploratory run

Papers were to be found in great abundance, but Kaleidoscope couldn't see much that might be specifically useful through the reams of logs and notes the lab generates as a matter of course.  Her mind fogs up as things grow dreamy with the exertion of the search.

She does however, find the security room, with several monitors rotating through cameras or static. The coverage is quite comprehensive, including the labs, the exterior and the work done in the office. There might be something to be found in the recordings, which with some poking around, she found as tapes in a locked cabinet, stacked deeply and labeled only with serial numbers and dates. Far more than would be practical to make away with, but if she could figure out which tapes were for the important areas, it's unlikely they'd be missed for days.

Kaleidoscope passes up the videos for now, instead making a note to come back with a trunk or two and a luggage boy - that is to say, Horizon. With everything interesting in the third floor exhausted, she drops down to the second without ceremony and repeats her exploration run. Hopefully, there won't be a giant radioactive sun-machine of death in the middle of this one.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync 2nd Floor - Exploratory run

The second floor's periphery is somewhat more mundane, consisting of mainly offices, mundane stores, bunk beds, and even a kitchen. It doesn't seem very damaged by Pyrebird, and upon inspection, the fridge is still powered and someone even left a tub of chocolate ice cream behind.

The middle section, directly under the test area, is unusually constructed. It's similarly sealed and isolated, though  a cautious entry reveals no miniature sun, only ceramic pillars, large blocks of plastic, and quietly humming machines in an entirely unlit room about the same size as the test chamber above. Only about a quarter of the devices seem to be in operation, going by the blinking indicators and noises.

It would be a shame to leave the ice cream where it is, so Kaleidoscope grabs that and is on her way, noting the security videos before moving on to the first floor and repeating the tour.

Kaleidoscope - Sigma Sync Ground Floor - Exploratory run

The ground floor seems odd, especially after exploring the upper floors. Labs that were sparkling clean and well organized notes, well furnished offices, and even a testing area in the back, which seems reinforced at a glance, but is woefully ill equipped to handle even a quarter of the power output she encountered on the third floor test area, particularly the reinforced glass. The central area seems to be dominated by a recreational zone containing a library and a small gym, decorated by someone with a pillar fetish.

She'd make an internal crack at the discrepancy - a presentable public face, maybe - if she was in any mood for it. But right now, Kaleidoscope just wants to get home and kick back eating chocolate ice cream and holding the tub to her burns. To that end, when she doesn't immediately see the rumored breaker box, she decides to fuck it and worry about it when she comes back with Horizon. If they left it running over New Year's and the shutdown sequence takes half a day, the walls will probably hold for a while.

With that decision in mind, Kaleidoscope takes the shortest route out of the building and past the cameras to get a short breather outside before setting out on the long way back to the C-Hole. As much as she wants to take some kind of public transport, running around with a tub of ice cream and a ring binder of tinker-level documentation would be pretty awkward, so she resigns herself to a long jog.

Across the city

Horizon makes it to the C-Hole with the air already slightly damp from intermittent showers and gusting winds, and for a change, few Specials are out, the weather having doused their enthusiasm. Kaleidoscope meanwhile, was less half the distance across when a major thunderstorm blasts through the streets...not that the water even bothers her. It certainly helps more than it hinders, in the downpour she looks more like a figment of the imagination even just walking down the street in the middle of the road.

Kaleidoscope unceremoniously drops in with only a light bop on Sam's head and an unintelligible mumble by way of a greeting before letting herself collapse on the tunnel floor and rolling around as if she was lying on a bed. "I'm shot."

Leaning against the tunnel wall with earphones blaring a little too loudly and his helmet off in the corner, Sam is dozing off when Kaleidoscope comes in. He jerks awake at the rap on the head, blinking in confusion for a few seconds before his eyes focus on his partner. "Mmmph...not literally, I hope?" He fumbles around and shuts the music off. "Thinker get you?"
