D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Pathfinder Shadow Gambit Feat
« on: September 22, 2020, 01:49:08 PM »
Does this feat really basically let you convert Minor Image into Shadow Evocations-like goodness at 50%?

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/shadow-gambit/

You can tap into the Plane of Shadow to momentarily lend reality to one of your illusion (figment) spells.

Prerequisites: Spell Focus (illusion), caster level 5th.

Benefit: As a standard action, you can draw upon energies from the Plane of Shadow to cause an ongoing figment spell you cast to damage a foe as if the illusion were real. The illusion must be one you retain ongoing control of, such as minor image, and the target must be both visible to you and within or adjacent to the area of your illusion. Using this feat immediately ends the figment’s duration.

You must either make a melee touch attack or give the target a saving throw (Fortitude or Reflex) to resist the damage (see below). If you choose a melee touch attack, you use your own melee touch attack bonus, and if you miss, the spell deals no damage. If you choose to allow the target a saving throw, a successful save means it takes half damage. The shadowy attack deals 1d6 points of damage per spell level. If the target disbelieves or sees through the illusion, reduce the damage by half.

The shadowy attack can deal acid, bludgeoning, cold, electricity, fire, piercing, or slashing damage, but the damage must be appropriate to the illusion. For example, an illusory wall that collapses deals bludgeoning damage with a Fortitude save for half, an illusory swordsman strikes with a melee touch attack deals slashing damage, and an illusory wall of fire deals fire damage with a Reflex save for half.

So I've been playing in a game with a Summoner that has a quadruped Eidolon and DR difficulties and lots of natural attacks got me to thinking....

Pummeling Pet!!

(Caveat: Yes, I realize this feat will likely be changed to make this idea and discussion irrelevant down the line.  Until then lets have fun :) )

Some pets start with Pounce, others don't.  Animal Companions and Eidolons are the creatures on my mind since they gain their own feats over time.

Before Pummeling let's fight with Style, Dragon Style!
Dragon Style!  - For two feats including Improved Unarmed Strike, 15Strength, and 3 Skill points in Acrobatics you pet can be charging over Difficult Terrain and through Allies which should have HUGE impact on its offensive capabilities.

Eidolons can accomplish this at 3rd level.
Druid, Hunter, and Ranger Animal Companions can accomplish at 5th level due to how their feats fall.

If retraining is allowed for Companions Druids and Hunters could have the feat at 3rd level as well.

Pummeling Style
This style requires Improved Unarmed Strike and BAB+6.

If retraining is allowed Eidolons could have the feat at the Summoner's 8th level.  If not they with have to wait for 9th level when they receive a new feat.

Animal Companions meet the BAB requirements at 9th level for Druids and Hunters.  Ranger Companions have to wait for 12th level. Without Retraining however the Druid/hunter companions have to wait for new feat at 10th level, 13th for the Ranger.

These feats, particularly Dragon Style, are attainable at levels that make them viable for use in the majority of games.

Pummeling Charge of course would also be great but it would come online a bit too late to make it into most games.  Eidolons meet BAB requirements at 15th level and get next feat at 17th.  Animal Companions do not get the BAB until 20th level making it possible to take the feat only if retaining is allowed.

It should be noted that...
Boon Companion Featof course normalizes Ranger Companion Development to the same progression as Druid/Hunters.

Bleed
Quote
A creature that is taking bleed damage takes the listed amount of damage at the beginning of its turn. Bleeding can be stopped by a DC 15 Heal check or through the application of any spell that cures hit point damage (even if the bleed is ability damage). Some bleed effects cause ability damage or even ability drain. Bleed effects do not stack with each other unless they deal different kinds of damage. When two or more bleed effects deal the same kind of damage, take the worse effect. In this case, ability drain is worse than ability damage.

So, as per the highlighted portion of the bleed condition you can stack bleeding, such as from the Bleeding Attack rogue trick so long as you are using weapons that cause different types of damage.  Use a slashing weapon and a piercing weapon for example.

Min/Max 3.x / [PF] Assassin is as Assassin does, who's best?
« on: December 31, 2013, 04:54:14 PM »
First we know that an Assassin is more than a class name.  In fact I'm pretty sure that we know that if we want to be an effective Assassin it is best not to have any of the class of that name.

And while in a mundane centric world Rogues and Ninjas make for skillful sorts we usually think of as Assassins I suspect that the Ranger would do better in that regard.

But what I have been pondering is which classes (outside god classes) would make great Assassins.  In a D&D world I can't imagine a great Assassin not having many and varied magics to assist him in his tasks.  So many of the most basic things and Assassin would need to be successful can be done by or augmented by magic.

That said I was pondering the merits of Bard versus Magus versus Inquisitor for the role of Assassin.  I suppose that one could easily throw the Alchemist in there too but I was focusing on the first three with consideration towards what their classes, spell lists, and even archetypes bring to the table.

But for now, time to go buy some whiskey and head to get some table top time in.

I'd welcome any thoughts while I'm gone sipping those fermented concoctions.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / I've Played E6, How about this...
« on: September 20, 2013, 10:31:36 AM »
I have played E6 games and in truth like them fairly well.  They do a pretty good job of limiting the top end magics and stuff to keep a game grittier in function while still allowing some pretty cool magics if it is wanted.

In the future instead of doing E6 style with the sudden shift in rules, feat, additions, etc... to make compensate I am considering trying something a bit different that I expect others likely have tried.

I would like to get your thoughts and/or impressions.

My idea is simple.  Just pick a spell level depending on the level of magics you want in the world and you can't learn anything higher.  You still otherwise level and accumulate higher level slots normally but those slots can only be used for the knowable spells and metamagiced versions of the same.

There is a slew of consequences but in general I think you should be able to play 1-20 advancing class features normally.  Yeah, there will be some that would be outside the Spell Level limit and thus likely need house ruled too.

You should be able to continue using a broader range of challenges.  Magics would still be awesome but melee types probably hold value to the party better over the long haul.

More consequences of course that that hits some of the highlights.

Whatcha think?

Min/Max 3.x / Need Prestige Class for Oracle that....
« on: November 20, 2012, 08:17:26 AM »
Looking for a Prestige Class for Oracle that gives +1 BAB and +1 Spellcasting at level 1.

I don't really care about what it gives beyond level one as it is a filler so can get to Fist of Raziel quicker.

Pathfinder and 3.5 prestige classes are allowed.  I've looked through CDiv,CAdv, CChamp so far.

I'm not remembering there being a class that fits the bill but I know that if one is out there this is the group to ask  :)

A race that gets +2 Intelligence and can add spells from other arcane lists to his class list!!

Yes Please!!!  I'll take Samsaran with Mystic Past Life for the win of filling in Beguiler spell list weakness.

9
Okay.  So sometime in the future I'll be playing in and underdark game.  The theme so far seems to be kind of a Duergar vs Drow but that certainly could change as the DM is really not being very restrictive on races he is allying with Duergar.  I guess they are a bit less xenohostile now :)

Character Building Mechanics:
20 pt buy (25 if I want to play something tier 4)
2 Flaws and 1 Trait (may be able to get 2) - This includes Pathfinder Traits like Magical Lineage, Wayang Spellhunter, etc... :)
Books: Pretty much everything goes on a case by case basis.  Some context.... He is going to allow Arcane Swordsage!!!
Tricks:  The DM is being fairly open tricks and combos.  Versatile Spellcaster infinite 1st level spells trick for example is being used.
As Necropolitan I'll be having d12 HD and CHA to HP and Fort Saves
Levels Played: Looks like we are starting at 2nd level and intended to go around 12th level.  (For that reason I have decided against really looking to do the Paragon Surge + Eldritch Heritage (Arcane) combo
for Wiz/sor spells on Oracle list.  That is not to say I'm ruling it out.

Basically I'm looking for nifty ideas to use with a Necropolitan Paragon Surge Oracle or Sorcerer.  I'm being allowed to use Paragon Surge without being Half-Elf.

I'm fairly open on race, Cha bonus of course is nice, darkvision doesn't matter.  Drow, Fetchling, and others are decent choices as are Half-elf, human and others.

I'm looking real hard at Samsaran for their Mystic Past Life (Su) racial feature to add spells from other arcane or divine lists as appropriate.

Being Necropolitan of course I wanted access to infinite Inflict Wounds for sure which is a thing I could have even as a sorcerer with Mystic Past Life (Su).

Can you think of a better/more interesting race than Samasaran?  Or tricks that would make Samsaran unnecessary to gain off list spells?

Which Spells would you suggest adding to list for either Sorcerer or Oracle using the Mystic Past Life (Su) trick?  I realize a lot of that depends on role I'm wanting to play so lets do some for both Caster focus and Melee (gish) perspectives.  3.5 spells are available if they are not redone in Pathfinder or ruled out by DM.

(P) = Pathfinder spell

1) Inflict Light Wounds (P) from Witch list if going Sorcerer
2) 1st level Grace (P) from Paladin list
3) Wraithstrike
4) 2nd level Haste (P)
5) Some 1st level decent Blast for Oracle to spam
6+) other Buffs, controls, awesomes?

Min/Max 3.x / Goood or Interesting Combos for Pathfinder/3.5 Mash up
« on: October 08, 2012, 10:17:02 AM »
So, I'm currently playing in a heavy hack and slash Pathfinder+ 3.5  game based upon Diablo III.

I'm playing a Paladin, well 2 levels of paladin going Oracle now and eventually Fist of Raziel for continued Smite and casting progression.

A very nice feat for spontaneous casters in such a mash up is Versatile Spellcaster for obvious reasons.

What other fun, interesting, or powerful combination have been found with integrating the two systems?

Min/Max 3.x / Getting Spellcasting on a Swifthunter
« on: April 10, 2012, 11:02:13 AM »
Okay, I have a Swifthunter Scout5/Ranger1 character that RP/story circumstances are leading him into being interested in magics.

I've started looking through to see if there are any great PRC's that could be used to add some casting into the mix.

I'd prefer to use something that lends itself to Fey/nature type theme and/or Shadow magics.

Mystic Ranger (Dr366) might be an option I'll have to discuss with the DM.

Beguiler followed on by an appropriately themed caster progression prc could also work.

He is non-neutral in alignment so Druid isn't much of an option.

I'm looking more to a gish sort of casting over being a god caster.

Any suggestions for Prc or classes

Min/Max 3.x / Using Subtitute Domain Spell for Domain Devotion feats
« on: February 02, 2012, 11:02:16 AM »
A friend and I are discussing the use of the spell Substitute Domain as a trick to gain varying Domain feats.

In this instance it is for a game where DM is allowing the spell to gain access to Domains outside diety/principle's normal scope.

The Trick is simple...

  • Cast Substitute Domain spell and choose a new Domain
  • The trade out that newly acquired Domain for the corresponding Domain feat.

Normal

  • Normally you can only gain Domains granted by deity/principle
  • Normally you can only take Domain feat that is thematically appropriate

The main book needed for this is Complete Champion for the spell and Domain feats.

Of note, the character using this trick is using the spontaneous casting cleric variant so this REALLY opens up his spell choices.

Any thoughts on this nifty little trick?

Flavorful Story behind the Question
(click to show/hide)

Do you still get Swift Actions if you are Slowed?

I've seen nothing (and I've looked) to indicate that you get Swift actions while slowed.

If there is no Swift actions the Slow/Ray of Dizziness + Hesitate becomes a nifty and pretty nasty little combo.

If you fail the Hesitate save you can only take a Move action.  Each round as a SWIFT action you get another save.  No Swift action would mean no Save.
