Title: Aundair
Post by: Sohala on November 10, 2011, 04:52:31 PM
Mishann sailed forth from Eston, bound for Thronehold and the start of her reign. To her surprise a Thrane blockade was waiting for her. Having little in the way of military vessels in her escort, she divided her ships; some remained in the slim hope of breaking through the blockade, while the rest made land south of Flamekeep. Only after landing did she learn of the combined Thrane and Brelish force arrayed against her.

Deep in enemy territory, and outnumbered five to one, she made a break for Aundair, only to be cut off by the larger force. Before her enemies were able to strike though, Wrogar and his Wardens of the Wood appeared to better balance the scales.

With little left to do, both sides sent forth heralds, exchanged challenges, and then about noon, did the fighting truly start.

Mishann had decided to let the enemy come to her, preferring to be ready to repel an early cavalry charge, Wrogar respected his sister’s decision and set is troops accordingly, and together they prepared to make their foe to pay dearly for victory during the coming fight.

Kargos Hammerstar - Left Flank

The sun is high, and the sky clear, as the thunderous sound of thousands of feet come closer. There are many people around you, most of which are elves. Those on the front lines are wielding shield and sword, with heavy armor, while those behind them are a mix of leathers and robes. To your right you can see the great form of Wrogar, standing at least a head above most of his troops. To your left are his cavalry, the powerful centaurs. As the sound gets closer you start to be able to make out individuals, then armaments, then crest, and then finally their eyes. All the while you can hear those in command shouting orders, trying to keep everyone from panicking. Then the fight is upon you with a loud clash.

As the two sides meet, a large dust cloud envelopes the front lines.

The dust from the charge clears enough for you to see the front lines have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of foes. Even your skilled elven allies could not hold back the tide, fighting odds of close to 4-to-1. The enemies lack of discipline, skill, and equipment plays to your favor, but will it be enough?

All around, there are masses of ill equipped humans fighting elves. Every now and again one of their attacks lands a hit, which flares with flame. There is a large group of the humans gathered around a better armored soldier wielding a crossbow. His voice seems to carry across the whole battlefield and it sounds like he is preaching about the Silver Flame.

Directly in front of you an elf falls to the assaults of three of the levies, who quickly look for another foe, like you.

Seeing the treacherous Thranites before him, Kargos made sure his trusted axe, a gift from his father many years ago, and his shield were readied for the fourth time since joining the field of battle, and prepared to enter the swirling maelstrom of combat.

As they catch sight of Kargos, the middle one makes a mad dash for him, waving his, spear about, while the other two approach with mild caution. All three try in futility to hit the dwarf with their shoddy weapons, but there is determination on their faces.

Deftly stepping out of the way of the desperate attacks, Kargos was calmed by the knowledge he was more in control of himself than his foes. Testing the waters of his opponents defenses, he slipped into the easy rhythm and launched an attack, though his axe was unable to find purchase through their armor. Kargos wasn't upset, he knew he was better, and what mattered was they would go down.

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

The axe misses the levy, as it grazes off his club.

The trio tried again to hit the dwarf, but his defenses were proving too much for them, but their determination appeared to hold, for now.

Trying to divide his attention between the three men fighting against him, and his elven allies, Kargos nearly had his axe knocked from his hands by another parry by his target's club. I need to focus on what's going on around me right now, the elves can take care of themselves. Kargos's face turned dour as he focused his attention back to the more pressing threat.

Heartened by the dwarf's misfortune, the levies continued their attack upon their foe, but faired no better.

Focused on his immediate foes, Kargos let loose a mighty bellow into his enemies face as he shuffled sideways, sending his axe striking home through the opening created by the Thranites surprise. Most combatants underestimate the volume of a dwarven battlecry up close. Kargos knew this one would never get the chance to do so again, as he could already feel the battle momentum swinging back towards him. He shouted words of encouragement to his ally off to the side, knowing that preserving battlefield morale was important for hard engagements like these.

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

Those nearest the dwarf were startled by the outburst, barely able to raise their weapons in retaliation as one of their own was struck. The farthest among them was able to hold it together, enough to strike a blow on him.

Gritting his teeth as one of the three slipped an attack passed his shield, Kargos bellowed again and lashed out with his axe, taking pleasure in the fleshy thud accompanying his axe blow and using it to ignore the pain from the gash the third soldier just gave him. He continued trying to encourage his wounded ally.

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

The struck soldier collapsed, and didn't get up. His companions stood & stared in horror at their fallen comrade before lashing out in desperation.

The nearest elf takes what should have been only a minor scrape, but as the blade hit, fire flared from it. The elf recoiled from the pain, dodging the other attacks.

Kargos began laughing, clearly with the intent to unnerve his remaining foes. "Your heads are next!" he bellowed, gesturing to their fallen comrade's caved in helmet with his shield before slashing the one to his left with his axe.

(click to show/hide)

With all traces of eagerness gone from the pair, they tried fervently to bring down the dwarf before they too were among the dead, but to avail.

"Run while you can, little man!" Kargos bellowed at the remaining foe facing him while his axe sunk deeply into the wounded soldier's side, crushing ribs with a sickening cracking sound and launching the body to the side. "You're next!"

Looking over to his elven comrade who had been struck by the burst of fire, "And then I'm coming for you!" following up all of this with another bout of mad cackling. Let them think me battle-mad, it will make it all the easier to deal with them if they are reluctant to attack me.

With what little resolve he could muster, the levy attacked once more, but it did little good.

With a resounding shout, Kargos knocked aside his remaining foe's club using his shield, and buried his axe into his enemy's head, shattering it into a gory mess. "Hang on, elfy! I'ma comin' for ye'!" he bellowed, readying himself to charge to the rescue of his battle companion.

With a hearty bellow, Kargos ducked his shoulder and crashed into one of the humans harrrying the elf with the savagery of a minotaur.

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

With agility that surprised even the levy, he was able to just avoid the inhuman charge. Before Kargos could recover, the levy attacked with its curved blade, scoring a minor wound.

Even though one had stopped attack him, the slightly singed elf kept up his strong defenses, dodging another two attacks.

Equally as surprised at the Thranite soldier's display of agility, Kargos fell back into his training and reset for his next attack before his foe could bring his defenses back in line. "Silver Flame this you child worshipping traitors!" he let's loose another bellow of laughter that never reaches his grim-set eyes as his axe thuds home with a wet squelch. "See elf? They bleed pretty easily! It's just some burns, fight through it and give 'em what they deserve!" Almost as an afterthought he asks, "What's your name, elf? I want to know who carries the line with me when we go cut down that commander!"

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

The blow landed a large gash in the levy's side, but he remained standing and even managed to try and attack, but he miss by miles.

With a flourish, keeping the shield between it and the other levies, the elf made a lunge, finishing off the wounded levy. "They bleed well enough, but so do we," Replied the elf, indicating the minor wounds on its arms and legs. The elf's tone was commanding and you could almost swear it sounded feminine, "Tahllia is my name good dwarf, and if you are done yapping, there are more that need killing." To help make her point the other two levies attacked as a pair, but both found a shield in the way of their weapons.

Kargos's charge knocked his enemies club wide, leaving a huge opening for Tahllia to attack that was only slightly smaller than the gash the dwarf's axe left in the man.

"What was that? Couldn't hear you over the sound of my axe killing men," Kargos quipped back with a grin, this one reaching his eyes.

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

The elf just shook her head at the dwarf's reply, before she bashed aside a wild swing from the last levy and followed up with a deep slash of her own.

The wounded levy was virtually cowering before the pair of warriors.

"I'll leave this runt to you then," Kargos said over his shoulder as he raised his axe high, and charged across the battlefield faster than most dwarves, bellowing a raucous warcry as he swept his waraxe down at his surprised foe's head.

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

The levy collapsed under the dwarf's sudden assault, standing not even a remote chance.

Tahllia attempted to attack her remaining levy, but fear fuel his feet faster than she could swing. He didn't get very far though, as a volley of arrows just happened to hit where he was going.

With a grin on his face, Kargos let loose another fierce yell and slammed his axe into the man's face on the backswing as he yanked it free from the corpse at his feet. Maybe I could come to enjoy this soldiering thing.

(click to show/hide)

The wound is grievous, but the levy made one last futile swing at the dwarf before facing oblivion.

The elf and reamaining levy trade blows, but neither are worse for it.

Meanwhile, Tahllia seeing that you have your fight well in hand, rushed to the aid of another elf.

Fed up with that annoying club, Kargos bellowed into the face of his adversary a rather vulgar phrase in dwarven involving an anatomically  unlikely activity the Thranite soldier could perform, the sheer volume of which startled the soldier to the point he left himself open to Kargos's deadly axe.

"Hah! They don't like being yelled at, elf! Let's make some noise!" The disturbing smile that didn't reach his grim eyes returned.

The rain of blows from the levies continues, but not even the club wielder get a blow through. By contrast the elf manages to take the head off of his foe and then quickly moves to flank another levy; this could be due to a sound combat decision or just an urge to get away from the crazy dwarf, but who knows.

Satisfied his theory was right, and seeing them already on their heels, Kargos lashed out with his booming voice and sharp axe, chopping right into his target's neck. Against his better judgement, he followed that with a short burst of laughter, hoping to unnerve the Thranites by appearing crazy.

"Go help Thallia and the other one, I'll go help the line!" Kargos called out as he hustled forward to the slowly failing line, praying to the Host in his head for the battlefield inspiration necessary to win this fight as he fell into the familiar movements of his training, launching an axe blow at the nearest foe.

The elves run off to aid their commander. In their initial charge they bring down one of the levies.

The swing of your axe takes out the sickle wielding levy, but another just takes his place.

The elves try to hold back the line, but it is all they can do to not be hit.

With the fall of the elf, the levies now have a hole, and they start to move through it, all the while keeping their weapons into motion to the rhythm of their leader's orders. As their weapons swing through the air red sparks trail after and on impact with anything there is a small explosion of fire. One such weapon comes arcing towards Kargos.

Feeling his morale rising from the turn of the fight, Kargos pressed the retreating commander will a mighty bellow with each attack, relentlessly battering at the commander trying to press until his defenses broke.

The dwarf's axe blow knocks the crossbow totting human to the ground, silencing him.

The elves make quick work of the remaining humans with precise, coordinated slashes.

With the last of their immediate foes slain, the elves hurried about the field, making sure none would be getting up without divine aid, and checking on their fallen. Meanwhile Tahllia approached you, while keeping a watchful eye on the surrounding conflict. "Well fought dwarf, your axe wa-"  She is interrupted as a cry came up from the commander's body. The elf kneeling over the body was holding up a belt with three vials marked with the Seal of Jorasco. Tahllia gave a reply in elvish and quickly went to check on her fallen comrades, while stating, "They are potions of healing, if my brethren yet live, they may save them." There was another elf already kneeling over one of the fallen elves, and he only shook his head when questioned by Tahllia. Moving on to the last one, she puts her ear to his mouth, hope seems to light up her face as she gestures for a vial, "He still breaths, but it is faint." Even with that statement she administers only one vial.

Having finished their grisly work, the other elves return, Tahllia gives them a few quick orders before they pick up the bodies, a pair carrying the still living elf, while the slain one is slung over another shoulder. The last one takes up a guard position as they head back through the lines. "They are taking them to the druids; such brave warriors should be cared for, even in death. But enough talk of dying, shall we go aid another part of our forces?"

Title: Re: Aundair
Post by: Sohala on November 10, 2011, 05:11:55 PM
It was not long before the tide of the battle was shown.

The might of Aundair had crush and scattered the levies of Thrane. The Thrane cavalry, said to be the best troops on the continent and who had been held in reserve, scattered the Wardens of the Woods just as handily. To make matters worse Mishann had fallen in battle, bearly being saved by her brother. It was rumored that Wroann had fallen to an assassin during the battle, when in truth she had merely unsaddled by a stray crossbow bolt from one of her own troops.

With little other choice, the combined Audair-Cyre force retreated south over the Thrane river, having fared better than they could have hoped. Shortly after, the troops of Karrnath arrived, but too late, their quarry had made good time, crossing the sound north of Aruldusk. Once across they reformed at the fortress of Eston, where the queen, having recovered to enough lead again, order the bulk of her standing forces to hold the city, for its key location, the crucial iron and adamantine mines, along with House Cannith’s base of operations.

With these tasks taken care of, Mishann returned to Metrol to oversee the mustering of greater armies.

Fortress of Eston

The race to safety after retreating had been fraught with danger and exhausting, to say the least. The forces of Thrane and Berland had swift scouts, ambushing their foes whenever possible. Casualties were few, but injuries were high, and with each one their quarry slowed. It was too little, too late though; the Audair and Cyre soldiers had finally made it to the sanctuary of Eston.

You pass through the giant steel gates of Eston, all around you there are panting and sweating soldiers of all races and dress. Average citizens are either staring from beside the buildings or attempting to help the tired soldiers. Gnomes hustle about with wands drawn and wearing bloody robes, tending to the most grievous of wounds. One runs up to your recently met companion, Thallia, still by your side. She appears a little worse for wear, having lost her helmet during the Thrane cavalry charge; her hair is hanging loose but is matted with debris and blood. Her armor has numerous dents and a few of the plates are cracked. Still she waves him on, saying, “I will live, there are others who need it more than I.”

The gnome gives a nod and then shuffles over to you, but hesitates before trying to examine you.

Giving a grin, Kargos waves the gnome on. "Save your resources for the others. My spells and my shield kept me safe enough, what you see is nothing more than flesh-wounds. Most of them probably won't even scar," he finishes with a short bark of laughter as he flakes dried blood from his arms.

"Where are we garrisoned? I've never been to Eston before," Kargos asks, hoping Thallia knows the answer. He keeps his eyes roving, still in the habit of watching for foes sneaking about to ambush.

(click to show/hide)

"Nor have I. My only other time in Cyre was as an escort to Metrol on the lightning rail."  Her voice is full of exhaustion, the strength born of fear slowly ebbing from her. Noticing Kargos's attentive state she tries to reassure him, "There should be no need for that, we are in an allied settlement."

Taking a breath to calm himself slightly, Kargos finally manages to stop looking quite so paranoid. He does, however, take a moment to look around for others he recognizes, hoping to see someone who might have the right amount of rank and authority to provide directions to the two weary soldiers.

Kargos makes a beeline for the officer, snapping to attention and waiting for the Captain to acknowledge him before speaking.

While you are making your way there the captain makes a gesture towards the middle of Eston. The soldier gives a salute and says something before heading to the group behind him. The captain then returns to directing the arriving wounded, that is until he hears you. The captain lets out a sigh and then starts turning, "Yes, what can I help you with?"

"Sir, our unit was scattered during the retreat, where are the Aundairan forces garrisoned?" Kargos looks around at the relative chaos, and adds "Although, I would be more than willing to lend a hand where immediately needed. What wounds I sustained passed my magic have healed already."

He gives you a once before replying, "I would welcome the help, but I wonder what type of magical aid you can give. You don't look like a cleric of any faith that I recognize, and you are clearly not a halfling."

Aside from my physical strength, I'm a fair hand at stonework, Sir. I received great praise after my apprenticeship had been completed before joining the army for it, Sir."

A slight frown takes to the captain's face. "Our supply of craftsmen is probably fine, the town being run by House Cannith. As to your question, they are setting something up in our wood." He points further into the city and then makes a gesture as if making a right turn.

Kargos snaps a salute befofe turning to head in the direction the officer pointed, waving to Thalia as he goes.

As Kargos is leaving, Thalia is just making it there. With the wave and departure she grabs her legs breathing heavily. The officer gives her a quick look and she makes a weak salute before following after the hearty dwarf.

After a short jog, Kargos gets sight of a stand of trees. There are robed elves scattered around the edge. They have a faintly green glow and are chanting. The effects are subtle but visible; they appear to be encouraging growth. Even has he watches a section becomes walled off with foliage.

There is a small grouping of tents just inside the edge of the trees. Creatures of the woods, among others, are milling about. About this time Thalia manages to catch up. Nearly collapsing in fatigue she is able to wheeze out a quick question, “Must we run everywhere?”

"Sorry, Thalia, I forget not everyone has a Dwarf's hearty constitution."

Kargos steps to the side of the road for a couple minutes to let Thalia catch her breath without blocking traffic. "Looks like that's our target, let's take a moment to rest in case they send us elsewhere immediately," he says as he fiddles with straps on his gear, and scroll cases.

She leans heavily against a nearby wall, catching her breath. As the minutes pass the elves continue their work. What seemed like simply growth is revealed to be a layering, each elf stimulating different types of vegetation. The last of the elves appears in tune with the trees, as he causes a layer of branches to form on the outside. It then moves onto the next section.

Seeing Thalia has caught her breath, Kargos begins walking towards the enclosure. "So, what exactly are they doing?" he addresses to his elf companion.

With a just a hint of smugness she explains, "They are accelerating the growth of the plants and then shaping them into a single interwoven tangle. It looks like we may be staying here."

Kargos's eyes give away a bit of disbelieving criticism as he wanders into the canopy, "So, we're going to stay in a tangle of flammable trees? That seems an...interesting idea in a war."

The nearest entrance has a trio of elves standing watch they give a salute which Thalia returns. They eye Kargos, but Thalia says something in elvish, drawing their attention back to her. She stops and talks for a brief moment while the dwarf makes his way through the entry way. As he finishes his statement he clears the short wooden tunnel, his eye's take in quite an industrial sight. There are elvish and numerous woodlands creatures setting up a uniformed, yet somewhat elegant, military camp. A majority of the structures are made of canvas, but a couple of the larger central buildings look to being made of wood. Scattered throughout the camp are the still living trees, used as tent posts to flag polls.

Thalia catches up a moment later, "I suppose you would prefer stone and metal?"

"I still stand by my flammable comment," Kargos gruffly replies, though its lack of conviction and his wide eyed gaze belies his wonder at the sight. "Where do we go from here? Where should we be checking in?

Thalia just shrugs, "All things burn."

She thinks about it for a moment before replying, "One of the larger tents is probably being used for reporting in, until contruction is complete. Lets try over there." The elf points to where there is a rather large group gathered.

Kargos nods and alters his course, having to stretch to try to see over the gathered soldiers when he gets close.

The crowd turned out to be half line, half onlookers. Both halves are watching the construction of one of the large buildings, but it is not the work they are watching, rather the large bear and giant of a man working on the building. Thalia gasps at the sight.

The line leads to the opening of the nearby tent, where you can see scribes at work.

While waiting Thalia says not a word and frequently glances over at the subjects of interest. The progress is rather slow, but there seems to be no initially obvious cause for it.

Nearing the tent's entrance, the sluggish pace starts to make sense, as you hear the scribes asking those signing in a large list a question. The scribes themselves are each gnome, adorn with a symbol of House Sivis, and are unceasingly writing. The only pauses you see any of them make is to move a full sheet of paper over or to call the next person forward.

Having finally reached the front of the line, you and Thalia wait for the next scribe to open up. When one does, she calls out, "Next."  Both of you head in that direction and the gnome gives you a glare, "One at a time,"  annoyance is clear in her voice. Thalia being ahead of you continues forward, the gnome gives you a final glare, "Now get back in line,"  she then starts grilling Thalia.

It takes a few minutes, but eventually another gnome calls for the next person. He has a long, full beard; quite an unusual feature for a gnome. On his left hand you can see the telltale blue and purple of a dragonmark. “Oh ho, a dwarf, with a right nice beard too! Maybe you can give me some tips for mine. Some days I just can’t seem to get it to stop itching, know anything for that? Or perhaps you could teach me how to braid it?” The gnome to his right clears her throat rather loudly. “Shove off you up tight prude.” Not seeming to notice she clears her throat once more. “Fine…” Your gnome then shifts to a very mono-tone voice, “Name?” and then in a whisper, “I swear these gnomes have never had fun in their whole lives. Only reason they tolerate me is ‘cause I’m marked.”

"Kargos Hammerstar," he clearly announces, then in a quieter voice, "I remember those days, put a little bit of bacon grease on it when it itches, it'll stop itching after a couple weeks of that." Kargos gives a sidelong glance at the female gnome who kept clearing her throat.

The female gnome is rather old, with heavily wrinkled skin. Quite the opposite, her clothes are made in the latest fashion and are pristine.

The gnome’s eyebrows shoot up at the suggestion, “Bacon grease? Wouldn’t that smell a bit?”  Keeping up appearances the also continues his line of questioning, “Unit?”

"Gotta make sure you get the fresh stuff to use when you first get up, and wash it out before you go to bed. Keeps it from going rancid. Just watch out for dogs following you," is the muttered reply, before clearly announcing "Third Brigade, 7th Light Infantry. We took more casualties in the retreat than we did while holding the line, and the retreat's organization degenerated rapidly with us trading blows with the damned cavalry charges." Kargos spits on the ground in disgust. "Do you know if many of us survived? I've only seen a handful of us since we entered the city."

"That makes sense, I'll have to try it." The gnome nods through your report as he writes it down. With your question he pauses, “I guess I could see what I can find out,”  And with that he disappeared behind the counter.

Several minutes and the occasional glance in your direction later, your bearded gnome hops back up to the counter with a small stack of papers. “Let’s see here…”  He flips through the papers, “The reports we have so far seem to agree with yours, though there are not terribly many of them, I’m sad to say. There are…” The gnome pauses while he finishes going through the pile. “…52 reports so far, barely a fifth of your unit. I, uh…”  He then trails off.

Kargos quirks one of his heavy eyebrows, giving a soft clearing of his throat to prompt the gnome to continue.

The gnome looks down, as if ashamed, "I just wish I had better news to give you Kargos."

"Ah, not your fault," Kargos replies, his voice a little gruffer than usual. "And there's nothing to do for it, anyway. If you'll direct me to my barracks, I'll get out of your way and wait for the next chance to take it out on those Thranish dogs responsible."

The gnome gives a reluctant nod in acceptance. Somberly he gives general direction to some housing before saying his farewells, under the scornful eyes of the female gnome. He catches the look and his face turns to a grin and gives a slight chuckle before calling the next person up.

Outside the tent Thalia is leaning against a building, waiting for you. She hasn’t noticed you yet.

Kargos moves somberly over to her, "Looks like the stories we heard during the retreat were true, Lass. Most of our company was wiped out. I've got where our barracks is supposed to be, maybe we can find the few of us left, assuming they don't combine companies at this point." His gruffness betrays his hurt over this news.
