NOIN
The noin differ from most other creatures in the Akashic Records in that they didn't come from the Records originally.  The noin began their existence in the Plane of Shadow, where they were no more than sentient pieces of living darkness.  At some point, these shadowy existences came across a group of humans who had wandered into the Plane of Shadow and become lost.  Desiring form, the noin took the human's faces and created bodies for themselves from them.  The humans weren't particularly happy with this, and went to war with the newly embodied noin, hunting them down and killing them wherever they could.  The noin were pushed to their limits, and if they hadn't been saved by the kami and brought to the Records, there would likely be no noin left in existence.
Personality: Noin are quiet and unassuming, with little in the way of ambition.  A noin never forgets a good deed or a favor, and will strive to reciprocate any kindness shown towards them.  The noin are more conniving than many would expect, and take pleasure in forming and carrying out complex plots.  Most of a noin's schemes are purely academical, without malice or any intent to actually carry them out, and the plots that a noin does carry out tend to be rather mundane.
Physical Description: Noin are tall, dark skinned humanoids with straight white hair and large horns.  These horns are made of a bone-like material and grow out from the sides of the noin's head.  In male noin the horns curl up like ram's horns, while in female noin the horns grow out straight.
Relations: Noin are cautious of anyone who isn't a kami or a noin, and generally live by themselves.  None of the other denizens of the Records dislike the noin, but because of their reclusive habits there are few who know them well.  While no currently living noin was around at the time of the war, they have a general distrust of humans.  Due to their humanoid appearance, noin are well received in the outer worlds, even if they aren't well understood.
Alignment: Noin, like most of the creatures in the Records, tend towards neutrality.
Noin Lands: The noin live mostly in towns in the Marsh of the Lost, though some noin live in the City of Marrow.  The noin tend to be reclusive and insular, and even in the City they live mostly amongst themselves.  The noin are primarily farmers, and much of the noin lands are farmed.  There are a few small noin settlements in the outer worlds.
Religion: Noin, like most of the creatures in the Records, worship the kami.
Language: Noin, like most of the creatures in the Records, speak Moji.  Noin player characters speak Common, and noin living in the outer worlds speak whatever language is used around them.
Names: Unlike many of the creatures in the Records, the noin don't name themselves in moji.  Noin use an old language they spoke before they were saved by the kami for naming purposes.  This language is effectively dead; no noin currently alive speak it.  As such, noin naming is done along historical lines, with children inheriting names of ancestors.  The names have long since lost any linguistic meaning.
Adventurers: Noin rarely adventure, preferring instead to plot in the shadows or tend their farms.  As such, most noin adventurers are young adults, tired of the farming life and looking to make a name for themselves.  Rarely, an older noin who schemed too hard and needs to lay low for a short while will take up adventuring while they wait for everyone to forget what they did.

NOIN RACIAL TRAITS
  • -2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom: As beings born of shadow, a noin's physicality is weaker than it could be.  They make up for that in other ways.
  • Medium: As Medium creatures, noin have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
  • Noin base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Fade into Shadow (Su): Three times per day, as a free action, a noin can fade into the shadows around her, gaining partial concealment.  A noin can remain concealed in this way for a number of rounds equal to her Hit Dice.  A noin can only fade into shadow as long as she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow.  She cannot fade into her own shadow.
  • Technique-Like Abilities: 1/day--action at a distance, technician's flare.  A noin's shadow detaches from the ground when she uses her action at a distance technique-like ability.  It is the shadow's hands that manipulate the targeted object.  Technician level is equal to Hit Dice.
  • +4 racial bonus on Hide and Move Silently checks: The noin's shadowy origins lead them naturally to stealth.
  • Automatic Languages: Common and Moji.  Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic).
  • Favored Class: Miko.  A multiclass noin's miko class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing.
