Karlat glances at the group around him, then back at the merchant. "I do believe you made a mistake, letting us all get to know one another before hearing your proposal. You see, in order to track down a large pack of bandits, you need at least a small team of a high talent level. There is one, right here in front of you. The key word in that sentence is one. Unless you have a second team of adventurers squirreled away in your vaults, I suggest you restart the negotiations with a number more appropriate to the value and scarcity of the kind of services we are bringing to the table." He glanced over at his subordinate. "Cwalu, what do you think a fair value for our services would be?"

Cwalu, clearly primed for this, gestured about the room, then stroked his chin in exaggerated thought. "I think a nice round thirty gold per crate sounds right. Why, that's only six gold for each person in this team for every crate we recover. Giving you myself as a discount, of course. And then there's the matter of the bonuses. I'm not concerned about the number we retrieve, since we'll get all of them. But if you want us to enact a final solution on certain individuals for you, well, that's a whole different kettle of fish. I think we can all agree that a fee of fifty gold for each bandit who reaches retirement is more than adequate."

The soldier completed his speech by returning to the wall, against which he leant insouciantly, spear at his side, as Karlat resumed his part in the little play. "You'll find we're all in agreement on both the price, and the fact we can get started as soon you agree to those numbers. But if you wish to lose more product to the bandits, by all means, dicker away."

Janks watches and listens to Karlat and Cwalu in admiration. He's always been more of the "steal stuff and lie about it later" kind of person, rather than negotiation, and this sort of thing is a bit beyond his experience. He reflects that perhaps a show of "talent" might be more effective than the words he would contribute.

There's a soft metallic purr, and then a 6-foot-long dragon crouches in the young man's place, mirror-bright scales reflecting the morning sun in silver. He glances at Marktunsel with an expressionless boredom, then begins to play hunter-and-prey with the smaller, ephemeral reptile. It is quite obvious that the large, wickedly sharp talons that click against the floor could tear the furniture to shreds, and equally obvious that, despite the muscles rippling in his scaly shoulders, Janks is restraining himself - out of politeness, of course.

Kairon instinctively activates his WIS and inspiration auras looking and listening at the room and their host and listening intently as she explains the situation and the other party make their case...trying to sense what would ultimately motivate her in their negotiation.

Novak watches all of this, unsure of what to do with himself in this situation.  These humans are very strange.

Robb watches the interplay between Karlat and Cwalu with a small grin on his face. Clearly, the two of them are quite practiced at this sort of game. At the pause after Karlat has finished, Robb waits a beat, and then adds, Of course, all of that is on top of our equipment and travel expenses for this little... outing. He looks to Karlat with a barely raised eyebrow - just a hint of questioning.

A barely perceivable wink floats in Robb's direction as the mercenary caught the argument deftly. "But of course. Would you have us search for your enemy cold, tired, and starved? Or would you prefer us in the finest of fettle, alert, capable, and very, very, dangerous? I think you understand which is best." Here he gestured to the performance of Janks, elegant sinews coiling about. "If you had any doubts about our ability to undertake your task, my colleague here has removed them. If he has not, I'll ask several more of my companions to undertake a demonstration. Although... some of them are less restrained than our good friend here. I quite look forward to your reasonableness."

Marktunsel sits calmly, watching your performance. When you seem to have finished, she responds, unamused. "I think you'll find the original offer to be more than fair for this sort of work."

"I believe the emphasis of it was on the wrong end of the equation, however, hence my suggesting that the bulk of the reward be focused on the permanent solution to your bandit problem, rather than the temporary nature of retrieving crates. I would also gently suggest that a payment up front, as an indication of your good will, might be appropriate. Asking us to trust someone we do not know fully on faith is a bit strong. I believe 200 gold, split across all of us, would ensure a proper start to our relationship."

Robb leans over to Novak, and whispers, True, an advance payment would certainly help prevent... wait for it... he raises a finger and pauses for a beat with a big grin on his face. ...Chicane-ery. Get it? "Chicanery??" He gives Novak a little nudge with his elbow and laughs softly.

Novak looks very confused and whispers back, "No, I do not get it.  I have been informed that the explanation of a joke can render it no longer amusing but I would appreciate an explanation regardless."

Kairon motivates CHA.

"Master Marktunsel, we are honored to meet you, and we appreciate your generous offer. You a clearly a woman of great power, influence, and authority. I'm sure you got there through clever reasoning and bold action. As you can see we are adventurers eager to prove ourselves and make the world - and this guild - a better place. I'm sure you see the value of adding a loyal team of specialists to advance your goals beyond this particular job, and we see the value of working with an accomplished, wise, and generous patron.  It reminds me of the story of a famous patron in the valley named Charlie who had a cadre of angels in his service, but I digress . . . As an authority in this venerable guild I would guess that you're you used to people jumping when you say jump. We are very good at that.  While I'm sure you're eager to get this matter with the lost goods settled quickly, as you likely have many fires to put out today, I believe my compatriot has hit upon the point that stopping the bandits is of greater long-term value to you and greater risk to us than simply recovering the stolen goods. Perhaps my friends could assist my case and you, in your wisdom have a solution that takes this into account and  also goes further to establish our mutual trust and future friendship."

Diplomacy to improve attitude before assists:

Oh. Well... Robb looks a little crestfallen that his - admittedly terrible - pun has gone unappreciated, but obliges to attempt an explanation. She said it was the "Chicane" Guild. And you know the word "chicanery," right? Um... He pauses for a second, searching for the right words. "Using trickery to your advantage?" So it was a play on words, since "chicanery" contains the word "Chicane."

"Hmm... Very well. An advance payment of that sort can be arranged." Marktunsel scribbles a quick note. You notice the discussed amount of 200 gold, although the rest is shorthand and nigh-illegible scrawl. "Now, onto the details."

Marktunsel pulls out a small map of the valley. "We know the bandits are striking from somewhere in Kurkle Ridge. One of the caravan's teamsters was captured by the goblins, but he managed to escape shortly before the goblins descended into their warren. He said the warren was roughly here," she says, pointing at the northern side of Kurkle Ridge, "in the side of a box canyon. He said it looked like a large crack in the canyon wall, split open.

"As for the stolen goods, the crates are marked with the Sumberton sigil. (a crescent moon and a sheaf of wheat, you recall). Those crates are bulky, so you'll need some sort of pack animal or wagon to bring them back.

"Is there anything else you need to know?"

Karlat looked around the room, noticing the distinct lack of pack animals. "I would suggest a means of transport that is not our own two feet. It would allow us to travel at some speed, and arrive better suited to deal with the raiders. That might be the difference between you getting an extra crate back or not. Likewise, meals would be appreciated. Otherwise some of us will have to spend time in the markets preparing for outdoors living."

"I would assume that the agreed upon advance would be earmarked for such expenses, no? That said, the Chicane guild can provide pack animals and vehicles for sale or rental at competitive prices, especially for its contractors."

The silvery dragon comes to rest on the floor, and slithers back into the form of the irascible Janks. "That sounds good to me, and I'm ready for some action! Let's go and get some horses."

As he heads towards the door, his ghostly companion lands on his shoulder. <<Ooh, horses! I'm pretty sure those are delicious.>>

Janks mutters under his breath, barely audible as he begins to exit the room. "Well, then it's a good thing you can't actually touch anything, since we wouldn't have anything to ride on if you ate our transportation."

<<I don't care, I can fly.>>

Having had the joke explained to him, Novak makes a mental note that some humans engage in wordplay as a form of humor.  He then watches the negotiations unfold in front of him until they have been completed.  Seeing Janks get up, Novak gets up himself and follows.

That's it then. Thank you for the advance, Master Marktunsel. We hope to prove worthy of your patronage. We'll go get outfitted and hit the road. I assume we may keep the map?

Kairon bows low and the musical sound of the heavenly tongue dances from his lips.
