Off Topic Fun / Re: Worst 5 words a DM could say
« on: March 03, 2015, 04:26:37 PM »
TOTALLY OF TOPIC: I just overheard two of my child's teachers criticizing the educational system. One of them first used the word "climatized" to describe how the system is becoming modern (facepalm), and then had to look up the word "secular".

Jeez. These people are supposed to be above average intelligence.

LOLOLOL there were some funny ones, and some not funny ones. There are some that are just jokes, and some that i just didn't understand. But here are some of my favorites that i have actually heard before.

"Your character wouldn't do that"    . . . . . wtf?
"Randomly roll your character's class." .. . . . .(not everybody plays every class well)
"Alignment's determined by a d20." . . . . . . . . .. . (now there's a recipe for unhappy players)

But one of my favorites that i have heard before, and I'm sure some of you have also. . . . . .

I'm bored, let's start anew.  (a new campaign) (right in the middle and for no reason)

Game Design / D20 card game?
« on: October 06, 2014, 01:46:49 PM »
I don't have very many ideas, but am intrigued by the idea. I'm seeing a stripped down d20srd ruleset that plays like Magic the Gathering.

The few ideas I have: I see a duel with player against player. The PC card comes with the skills chosen, and the levels ups are in the deck as in pokemon. Familiars and Cohorts are also in the deck, and also level up. Spell book is another deck, as is equipment. A player creates his deck before hand with a limited number of cards.

The player then attempts to build trees in front oh them self (character, Cohort, Summons, etc), while attacking the opponent.

Sounds sprawling, but what dnd isn't?

More drivel. I'd be surprised if anyone even responds.

Game Design / Re: Examples of GMless systems?

I've thought about this some, too. Of course it seems as if you either get way too big and complex right away, or you limit rules/settings right away. The question might apply to how much limit to how big.

Perhaps a point buy that includes buying a land, stronghold, king, and religion, city, Deity, as well as a character. Then each player plays his territories as well as character. Only the character can increase in strength.
But it seems that this would need a story limit. Perhaps build-a-map like Settlers of Catan... with Cards for the gods and kings.

nothing. just rambling

While your listing alternatives/dips for first level for skills, don't forget martial rogue which gives a feat also (for two levels in fact). Makes for fun low level feat access.

bard/druid/rogue/fighter? :lmao So close to Fochlucan Lyrist :love and not going for it? Does he not know that FL exist? (complete adventurer) If he retrains the Fighter level he can get +1 BAB plus dual casting in FL :cool.

As for Duskblade, I have one, and have him set for spike chain tripping, with AoO. He's a badass, but a high Dex is needed to make it work best. Imagine tripping, AND Arcane Strike....

The Duskblade is cool, and fun. The trick is to add touch spells in any way you DM lets you :banghead. That and Versatile Caster, which will let you use your unused spells for more Arcane Strike, etc  ;).

My four year old daughter was sitting in my lap, and she insisted on putting all those smileys in.  lol

I dont see how you pass max skill ranks pr. Level in your build...
You must have skimmed past the Feat description. Laborious Training lets you treat all Int skills as level +5.

I did find a problem that i don't like though. "Legacy of Blood" is not WOTC. It fooled me, because it is Ravenloft, but apparently it got subcontracted out.

11
There is a feat I saw, that I can't find now. The feat makes all Int skills level +5 for max rank. I wonder if that could be used to enter Ur-Priest early.
I think that feat is an E6 Capstone.
Oh, I didn't realize what you meant. You mean "From Ravenloft Legacy of the Blood pg 92" is an E6 world?

12
Actually, I'm almost sure I can enter Ur-Priest at 4th. I've laid out the method in the spoiler, but before I go past UrP I hope to have someone double check the work? please? (don't bother beyond 4th level).

Then, what's your opinion on:
Savage Bard3/ UrP2/ MT3/ Wild Runner2/ Arcane Hierophant 1/Sublime Chord 2/ AH 7?
Specifically; is UrP 2 even necessary? or is MT 4 'better'? All I get is rebuke for 5-14/day and i don't know yet if i can even get DMM, Extend, Persist..... OTOH, maybe I can/should, since i would be raising Cha anyway possible....

Yeah, that.

Laborious Training [General]
Your selfless dedication to study and the long hours you have spent training for your craft have given you an increased capacity for learning. Prerequisites: Int 13, Knowledge (any one) 5 ranks.

Benefit: Your maximum rank in any Intelligence- based skill equals 5 + your character level. Normal: A character’s maximum rank in any skill equals 3 + character level.

From Ravenloft Legacy of the Blood pg 92

Pretty certain that a Savage Bard can enter Ur at 4th with that feat. Question is, what next?

While I'm thinkin' of fillers (suggestions?), anyone have a way to add ranks to Listen?  What about "Favored" and "Primary Contact"? Any others?

14
Well, I was just playing with how early Ur-Priest can be entered. There is a feat I saw, that I can't find now. The feat makes all Int skills level +5 for max rank. I wonder if that could be used to enter Ur-Priest early.

There is, of course, Iron Will from the Otyugh Hole. So, I think UrP can be entered at 4th level. (and a question, is Urp 10 worth shooting for? or is the DR divine too limited, and the wait for "steal SLA" too long?)

There are several classes that give high Fort and Will, but which is best? Savage Bard seems standard. 3rd level: BaB2, 2-0-2 saves, and all the skills...

I don't really know how/if SC goes later, just playin' around with that. Urp first.... Maybe some suggestions for upper levels?

The only real trick needed for this one is the olde Versatile Spellcaster/Heighten Spell trick, which WOTC said is valid. You will need Able Learner, which means you would need to be human. The biggest problem is (of course) that your bab is stuck at +1 till 6th level, and in fact only has +4 bab at 10th level (though due to FL full bab you nearly catch 3/4 bab by 20th). If you could use the Partial bab alternative you would do better.

Most FL builds have a bab from 14-16. This build gives spontaneous 9th level casting druid/sorcerer, and the Versatile Spellcaster lets you find more uses for the huge number of spells you would have.

There is a 3.0 Regional Feat that would let you learn druidic, if allowed, and that would allow going Cloistered Cleric in place of Druid, which some might find easier on the skills (and loses the need for Able Learner), but the two levels of Rogue put all skills but perform within easy reach.

What?

I assume:
D is Druid
MT is Mystic Theurge
R is Rogue
B is Bard?

As a request is for a level 25 character, I am confused what you are talking about.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. FL (in the paragraph part) stands for Fochlucan Lyrist, which is a prc from Complete Adventurer that gives full progression on both sides, three good saves, and full bab, as well as a few other bits. The build shown is for entry, and should include FL10 on the end. It would allow full spontaneous casting on Druid and Sorcerer.

I will do a quick edit on the upper post.

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Strange 5th Wheel Builds
« on: April 26, 2014, 03:23:02 AM »
I had an idea for a 5th wheel once. Of course Factotum is a sorta 5th wheel character, but here's the odd part. Make him an OLD cripple. Dump Str, Dex, and Cha. Then add age.

Have him collect spells like Improvisation, Guidance of the Avatar, and Divine Insight, as well as divination spells that he uses to track down powerful magic items (and of course Knowledge Devotion).
Make him obsessed with increasing his Int, and skills, including those neat "custom skill bonus" magic items, so he never fails. Max his UMD into the sky and fill his lap with scrolls. Put him in a wheel chair, and have him roll silently through the dungeon.

Not a very odd class, but done oddly.

Improvisation = +CL/2 (4x), (1 rounds per CL)
Divine Insight = CL +5 (max 15), (single use) (one hour)
Guidance of the Avatar = +20, (single use) (one minute)

Seems the Bard has the most access, with being nearly SAD with charisma, and having UMD on their skill list.

Did you actually ask about Duskblade yet? It's a pretty simple build, but fun. Strong, and yet certainly not overpowered.

This supposed to be serious or troll post? It's in the title he doesn't want Duskblade...

Yes, friend, thank you for the help. I only meant to point out; "As for the Dusk Blade, it wouldn't be received well, it is a awesome class however."

Sometimes when I assume a response from my DM/players i am wrong, and pleasantly surprised. I thought it might be worth the time to ask.

Improvisation: "These points count as luck bonuses for the purpose of stacking." , so i think they do stack.

Improvisation: Bard 1- luck bonus (transmutation)
Guidance: Cleric 2 - competence bonus
https://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20010504a
Divine Insight: Cleric 2, Paladin 2- insight bonus

All three seem to stack. What about the 'Custom Skill Bonus' item? How's that work? DMG?
