THE HITS KEEP COMING. My sister's primary income source (her art) just went up in flames...

...and by flames I mean her coffeemaker exploded and coated her room in boiling water, which dripped into her computer and fried it. I'm going to be up all night tonight doing data recovery to see if we can salvage anything at all.

One of my coworkers is the biggest fucking idiot on the planet.  We all have our own cell phones, and the no cell phone rule is not enforced.  Why then would you use the work phones to look at bbw and faux incest videos on pornhub?

At least the job doesn't seem to be killing you? That was a worry for awhile.

I know this is a bit late, but if your work depends on your computer, for Vecna's sake make frequent backups. External drives, online clouds, both is even better, then now and then make backups of your backups. It's a bit of an hassle, but you'll be glad you did it when something goes wrong.

the fortune 500 company i work for has a pretty decent (7/10) computer policy. this includes regular updates.... which just bricked a ton of our computers :p

My backup setup:

Working folder is a dropbox, so constant online backups.
Daily backup to internal secondary drive.
Weekly backup to external drive.
Monthly backup to second external drive.

Her backup setup:
She tends to use Facebook messenger to send finished work so her phone has all her portfolio work. In progress work? Hosed.

This time around I'm setting up backups for her -_-

Depending on how much stuff she has, mega.nz is free and has an application to sync like dropbox.

:lol  So, I take it they don't back-up before updating, then?   :love system roll back.
I used to run daily back-ups at work.  Not really a hassle, since it was all automagical.  And made a weekly back-up off site, just in case of sharknados.  And intermittent back-up to CD/DVD archive.  If you make money off your Com Pewter, get an automagic back up system!

Most companies don't back up computers before updating, we just trust updates to work properly.

Also, most companies don't back up workstations.  That's what server file shares are for!

we have a file server to keep our goodies safe... roving profiles and such mean that the pc is not very important... just a hassle till its fixed... :D

My new roommate is stealing from me.  I've been noticing small items going missing for the last few weeks - flashlights, nail clippers, that kind of thing.  Came home from work today and found that someone had gone through my desk and dresser drawers.  He even bent my metal sculpture.

But the real crux is he took half my coin bank, including a couple hundred bucks cash I had tucked away in there for emergencies.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

College roommate or generic apartment roommate?

Generic apartment.  As I took a more careful inventory, I also noticed my 3DS and a couple games were missing.

I confronted him about it last night, and he said he had a couple friends over while I was gone overnight the night before, and one of them was the likely culprit.  He claims to have talked to him today, and recovered my 3DS (but not the games), the flashlight, and a package that I thought had been misdelivered.  Notably did not recover any of the cash.

I can't decide if I believe that his friend was the one stealing, or if he's wholly fictional.  Kind of leaning towards the latter - or at least if the friend does exist, my roommate knew and did nothing.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.
