We need context on why this is awesome.

Ugh. At least now you know what was wrong...

In other news, remember the jaguar that used to hang out around my folks' country home? Apparently he (she?) came back to visit. Mauled two people that were hanging out in the woods at night suspiciously close to home.

We learned of the attack a couple of days ago. Turns out they both have criminal records so I'm suddenly feeling like I owe that jaguar a high five and a steak.

You know, pride might not pay the bills or keep you fed, but it can get you up in the morning to do the things that do.

My guess is that the reason you chose to stick to your principles is because deep down, you knew that if you'd taken the money and skipped town, you'd feel like shit for doing it the rest of your life, or however long the money lasted.

Whats kinda sad is that some of us worrying about money, if given enough to 'not have to worry' would use it up and then still have money troubles. Look at the stats for 'lottery winners'... I'd feel kinda disheartened if I were able to give 10 folks millions, and some of them just 'blew it all'... ending up about where they were originally, or worse.
It makes sense, if you think about it. People resist change. Suddenly coming into lots of money with no plan for it causes them to be reckless and stupid about it.

Me, I'd probably end up doing something like Akiyama's Sky Finance, from Yakuza.

Wow, it does look beautiful.

Is it just me or are most problems we have in this thread money-related? I need to become a billionaire already.

I'm entering my contests (of which I post a daily one on the Discord) so I'm working on becoming a millionaire!

Granted, if I win a million dollars I probably wouldn't tell anyone.

I feel like if I became a billionaire I would end up distributing millions of bucks around to a lot of people. Worrying about money is such a fucking drag.

It does sound like you've kinda turned out that way on your own, instead of choosing it as a path though.

I've tried behaving that way by choice for a while, and I realized that I was spending too much energy trying to brace for disappointment. It doesn't help that I have social anxiety, though.

Isn't that a bit of a depressing way to live?

Low expectations means minimal disappointment.
Perennially low expectations means minimal incentive, too. If you're always expecting the worst to pass, eventually you lose the ability to rejoice when it doesn't.

Disappointment, occasional or otherwise, is necessary to balance out ennui.

You don't have to apologize, man. Actually, this goes a little to the core of my argument about free speech.

Everyone has opinions. Those can be based on facts or impressions, they can make up the core of what you believe is right or wrong with the world, or they can be completely ambivalent about the subject matter. However, opinions have no intrinsic value, however well-formulated they may be or however strongly people feel about them. They are viewpoints, and said viewpoints are based off people's perceptions of the world and the values they hold closest to heart. Both of those can be easily distorted. Even when your starting line is nothing but bare facts, you can still arrive at the wrong conclusion.

However strongly my opinion disagrees with someone else's, it shouldn't be something one takes personally as a slight. And at the same time, the fact that my opinion is my opinion does not make it immune to criticism. Everybody's perceptions and values are different. How can you tell right from wrong if you don't have the same baseline assumptions? You'd never reach a consensus that way.

That is why I believe in UNRESTRICTED free speech. Yes, even the most asinine. Certain forms of expression should remain a crime - especifically those that incite violence - but people need to be exposed to a multitude of opinions in order to understand each other.

If everyone around you behaves the exact same way and displays the exact same opinions... how are you going to be able to tell the nice people from the assholes?

Like I said, I can see we were coming off two different viewpoints on the whole.

I share a more optimistic view of humanity, but then again, I know where your viewpoint comes from. I would rather believe in the potential for good mankind could have because it suits me better to think of what people can accomplish when said potential is put to work. But I also understand that many of mankind's problems are of their own making and could be solved more simply if not for its behavior.

Seeking out potential solutions that work WITH human nature rather than AGAINST it, or rather than trying to force them to change, is something I strongly believe in.

It sounds like you are of the standpoint that humans have rights just by existing even if they are no protected by an outside entity such as the government or the UN.

That opinion has never held water with me and I do not agree with it.

That's fair, differences of opinion are bound to come up, and we all have our reasons for them.

I do believe that humans have certain rights by dint of existing because if they don't, then what good is a society for, whatever its form of organization is? (Outside of a society different situations and needs apply, because at that point you're dealing with far more basic needs.)

I do not know why you have the opinion you do, and I would rather not assume one way or another. For me, I blame both my upbringing and my brief history in studying Law. It's what I was taught, and it has always made sense to me.

EDIT: Just realized you were probably replying to Power, though I'm thinking the difference in viewpoints does apply.

If facebook retains the ability to literally pull the plug and shutdown the site at any point, then no matter how big it gets it is still a private forum with restrictions on speech.

Bolding mine.

Now I'm all for containing stupidity. And it's clear Facebook does have its own political side. If you commit an actual crime, though, it ought to be reported to the police, rather than simply censored in a private yet open access group. Otherwise you're basically sweeping it under the rug.

That said, if you give a big ol' private corporation the right to decide what is and isn't a crime, you're in for a loooooooooot of trouble.

When you agree to terms of service that spell out things that aren't allowed to say then you've waived your right to freedom of speech.  Unless the government takes over Facebook/Twitter/whatever that's the way it should be in my opinion.

People have done the same with some terms of services to waive their right to privacy in certain aspects of their life.  Also there is no right to life, it is more of a prohibition against killing that is applied very differently depending on situation/location/other factors.
Law culture is very different from where I'm standing. (Brazillian law has its roots in Roman tradition.) Certain rights should always remain unalienable regardless of the circumstances.

There are multiple ways one could exploit the way of thinking you describe without necessarily breaking the law. If I add to a ToS a clause where using a service I provide implies any given member may be required to suck my dick upon request (keeping in mind ToS is often written in legalese and spanning some ten pages or more, and written in the vaguest way possible - in other words, nobody reads them) under penalty of a fine, well... is that enforceable? Can you withdraw consent? For that matter, WAS consent given in writing at the time you agreed to the ToS?

Contract law has (or in some cases should have) rules that prevent others from getting screwed over in the process.

EDIT: Also, the right to life is very much a thing. At least here. It is not dependent on legal status or anything of the sort.

To be fair, the right of free speech only applies to government restrictions on free speech.  You have no right to say whatever you want on Facebook (or twitter, this forum, etc).

Once any platform is large enough to be a de facto public square, free speech needs to apply, regardless of whether or not the owner of the public square is working with or for any government, either in public or in private.
That does bring up the question of whether one can consider a virtual space on the internet a public speech venue, which is something for which there probably should be a stricter definition. But as ever, law is slow when it comes to these sorts of things.

In which case it might as well be useless in a sense.

If your right to express yourself freely can be curtailed by private individuals or organizations systematically under the assumption of a privately owned space, then said right does not exist within said space. That's a dangerous assumption, because if you can do that with a right as basic as free speech, you can do it with any other right, such as privacy or even life.

Besides, free speech is a protection that applies a priori. I.e. it gives you a chance to say your piece. It also presumes accountability, so if you do say something incredibly stupid, other people have the right to point that fact out. That's what we have mods for.

An algorhythm is a tool of censorship. It doesn't allow for what you said to hang for a given period of time, flag what you said as a ToS violation and then delete it. It just deletes it outright. Likewise, it allows for no recourse. Even if you DO appeal to an oversight board said board picks and chooses what it responds to.

And I feel strangely giddy about it.

Have had the same account for upwards of ten years or more. Second post removed for violating ToS in less than six months, so I got a 24h ban.

Thing is, being banned algorhythmically makes me feel strangely funny. I offended a robot. I don't think that constitutes something that should warrant a restriction on my right to free speech. I could go on a rant here, but I am suddenly more interested on how the deposition of Mark Zuckerberg before the US Senate went. I assume, craptastic.

Welp, my sister is up to her usual shenanigans.

After basically holding our non-existing sibling relationship hostage for god knows how long (after she had the audacity to come after me while I was in a hospital with kidney stones the year before last) she blew up at me last year. Now, a couple weeks ago, our dad had to be hospitalized (combination COVID, pulmonary infection aggravated by his Parkinson's). And then she basically did everything she could to become the sole source of information for it by playing the dutiful daughter and remaining the sole point of contact for doctors and nurses alike. At one point, we were supposed to discuss DNR procedures (it was that bad) and she didn't want to talk. Thankfully, my dad has gotten MUCH better since and both me and his wife have gotten in touch with hospital staff and straightened things out, but my sister still needs to be held accountable for her shit - and she needs to change to an actual goddamned therapist like yesterday.
