Unofficial Errata Project / I'm thinking on reviving the project
« on: September 22, 2017, 01:24:06 AM »
Been away for a long while now, and I've had some time to step back on my existing projects. One of my personal problems is that, in order to work on a project, I need to be in a specific mood to do so and these moods last anywhere from a day to a week or so. This project was one that inherently would outlast those swings, and I have had the time to come up with a few solutions to this.

I want to split the discussion up significantly. A real-time portion for when I am able to sit down and work on it, and a forum discussion for when I inevitably have to sign off for the day. The real-time portion would be either on Discord or Twitch stream (since I also want to start up my channel and having an open chat like that would give us a way to bring in outside opinions without having a backlog of invites on Discord).

I am open to suggestions on this.

Min/Max 3.x / Reality Check: Nightmare Spinner 1 a good dip?
« on: August 29, 2016, 11:06:48 PM »
Here's the dilemma: If you don't dip Nightmare Spinner 1 you get your normal spellcasting progression.

If you do dip Nightmare Spinner 1 you get immunity to fear and 9 free Illusion spells/day of every level you cast, but you lose a CL. This stacks with Specialization and Focused Specialist.

Worth it?

Min/Max 3.x / Optimizing Boomerang Daze.
« on: August 04, 2016, 07:07:21 PM »
So I've been reading too much Eberron material, and I realized how powerful Boomerang Daze and Boomerang Ricochet (RoE) were. And then I saw the Manticore's Sting feat from Dragonmarked, and thought it would work really well with the feat. Except you can't have both.

Except you can. Stoneblessed lets you count as a Dwarf for feat prerequisites, and Boomerang Daze/Stun do not specify your region of origin has to be the Talenta Plains. And the Aptitude quality nicely lets you ignore Manticore's Sting's dagger/darts/shuriken restriction (although the idea is to use Morphing Shurikens to bypass enhancement costs).

And then I read Exotic Weapon Master. Specifically, this part:

Quote from: CW, Exotic Weapons Master
Throw Exotic Weapon: The character can throw an exotic weapon with no penalty on the attack roll, even if it isn't designed to be thrown.

Suddenly Manticore's Sting has no penalty on attack rolls. How do you guys like the idea of daze-locking everything within 30ft? Because the save DC for Boomerang Daze is based on your damage output.

Edit: I'm an idiot. Boomerang Daze doesn't require you to be a Halfling, so I can cut out Stoneblessed entirely.

After years of playing Dark Souls and it's sibling games I've found myself fond of the way shields are handled in the series and have been considering a mechanic similar to it. Specifically, in addition to the shield's innate AC bonus, shields would provide a round-to-round "temp HP" pool that helps deal with incoming attacks.

The issues I've come across stems from the nature of 3.5 combat:
  • At the lowest levels setting this pool to a number as low as 5 dramatically increases the sluggishness of an encounter if the enemies use shields, even for an optimized melee character.
  • The above point makes being a low-level non-Martial Adept worse, unless there were a reliable way to bypass the shields.
  • Doing the above makes shields less valuable for melee PCs, as even the most basic of sentient creatures would know to do it (depending on AoO penalties).
  • At the higher levels, even with a good scaling mechanic behind the shields' pool, they would eventually be outclassed by the raw damage output of high-CR enemies.
  • I'm having difficulties addressing how shields like this would help against spells, if at all.
  • The rocket tag nature of high-level play makes this option a bad idea, as it detracts from melees' ability to deal damage.
  • Currently, the best use for a shield is as a weapon itself.

Ideas are welcome, I could really use them.

Off Topic Fun / Ad Design Help
« on: April 29, 2014, 11:14:27 AM »
I'm working on an ad campaign for a mini-golf course (with an African Safari theme), and could use some assistance coming up with some taglines or slogans. FWIW, the mascot is a Macaw Parrot named Rainbow and the owner wants the bird to be featured in the ad (which I'm working on with my 3D modeling skills). The slogans/taglines don't need to be something the parrot would say, but that would probably be appreciated by the owner (since this place's target audience is children and young teens).

I'm not very good at coming up with catchy lines, so any help would be appreciated.

Off Topic Fun / Dark Souls Discussion Thread
« on: March 10, 2014, 12:05:13 PM »
Seeing as DS2 is coming out tomorrow, I'm taking the liberty of making a separate thread for both it and it's predecessor. Please keep all DS discussion to this thread from now on.

So, thoughts on these changes? I was aiming to make them more useful/powerful (namely changing up the AoOs on Bull Rushing and making Aid Another significantly easier), but want some outside opinions on the subject.

Off Topic Fun / The Small Rants Thread VII: Infinite Rage
« on: December 22, 2013, 03:05:46 PM »
As the previous thread hit the cap, here's the next incarnation.

To start us off, I have this really weird pain in my right foot, right behind the "ring" toe. Google didn't help, and it only hurts if I step on it with a little more pressure than normal. Doesn't hurt to touch it, or even when something hits it. Just when I step down on that side of my foot too hard.

Off Topic Fun / I need some help with a girl...
« on: December 09, 2013, 10:31:09 AM »
I asked a friend out today and got turned down. Her reason was that she's too busy, and given that I know what her daily schedule is like I believe her but I'm not 100% certain it isn't a "type" thing.

What I want is to take another shot later on, but I don't want things to get awkward between us since she is a good friend. I have a lot of respect for her and don't have much experience with dating (I've been on one actual date, and that date brought her mother to keep an eye on the two of us).

How exactly do I keep things from being wierd, and is there any way I can figure out if she's interested at all?

Chaotic Neutral Goliath (1) Lion Spirit Totem Barbarian 1/Dungeoncrasher Fighter 6/Ranger 2/Warblade 10 (optional, highly recommended)

(click to show/hide)

Everyone knows that Dungeoncrasher is awesome, that much goes without saying. What we also know is that TWFing is pretty bad unless you have an outside source of damage. What about combining the two, and turning the Fighter into a veritable pinball machine? This build is designed to set up Bull Rushes on a Full Attack as early as level 1, although the build itself doesn't kick off until you get Dungeoncrasher. The Gloves of the Balanced Hand can give you TWFing long enough for you to take Ranger levels (although you should take those first to get skill points), and the Ring of Forcewalls/Wand of Blockade ensures you always have a wall nearby to slam someone into.

During your turn, spend your Swift action to use the Ring (setting the wall behind an enemy) and your Full Round action to Charge. Power Attack for whatever you feel comfortable with (hell, you've got the feats to invest in Shock Trooper if you want), and then hit them with 6 attacks (more with Boots of Speed or with maneuvers, provided you already had a wall). Then dish out 8d6+48+Weapon damage per attack (as long as your opposed Str checks don't fail horribly). Turn anything you can bull rush (up to Huge size thanks to Powerful Build) into a bloody smear on a wall of force/block of wood.

For added fun, the Shield of the Severed Hand gives you a free Bull Rush attempt any time someone attacks you if you have the True Believer feat and the right alignment (as an immediate action, and the Shield either gives you a +4 bonus or sets the Bull Rush modifier to +4, so it may not be worth it). I included the Legacy items because they each give a +4 bonus on Bull Rush attempts; neither of them specifies that you have to wield that weapon, so you can just carry them both for a +8 bonus.

Min/Max 3.x / Bull Rushing Question

Is there a way to turn the Bull Rush action from a Standard action to an Attack action?

Min/Max 3.x / Optimizing Primitive Caster+Elder Giant Magic: What Spells?
« on: October 17, 2013, 02:34:08 PM »
These two feats add up to a +3 bonus to your CL each (PC being the hardest to qualify for the full bonus, as few un-metamagic'ed spells lack all components). What spells can be used with both, for a potential +6 bonus to the CL? Alternatively, what ways are there to get free Silent+Still Spell benefits without using metamagic rods or Sudden Silent/Still?

Ideally, the spell is one that can be used out of combat to not risk EGM screwing you over. Also, thanks to Uncanny Forethought it's possible to use any Wizard spell with EGM, so go wild with those.

Isn't there a couple of Divine spells that have just DF as their component?

Play By Post / May be starting a Maptools game, possibly need players
« on: October 03, 2013, 11:05:45 AM »
Hey everyone! I'm going to try and get a Maptools game going (me DMing, obviously), and I only have 2 players (one of which may not be available all the time). I may need 2 more, and would like to have potential applicants join in when we discuss character creation this Saturday (8-10am EST).

Off Topic Fun / I need major help...
« on: September 10, 2013, 09:36:32 PM »
There's been some strange phenomenon going on in my house lately. Last week my mother and stepfather accused me of stealing about $3 worth of quarters off of my stepfather's nightstand, but I haven't been in their bedroom in weeks save one occasion (when I needed the Neosporin and band-aids from their bathroom, and they were home for that). Today my mother accused me of using her restroom and not flushing. I haven't. My stepfather hasn't. My step-grandfather hasn't. My mom hasn't. In fact, the restroom hadn't been used since they woke up this morning.

We're under the assumption that someone had broken into the house sometime today (my mom still thinks I took the quarters though). There was a window of opportunity between 9AM and 10AM when the house was empty as my step-grandfather had to bring me a key so I could open the shop this morning, and we have a spare key hidden outside the house in case of emergency. The only people who know where the key is are either in this house or are extremely close friends (my best friends, my brother, and my father).

My mom said she is going to ask the police to investigate, but I don't know what to say to convince her of my innocence.

Min/Max 3.x / Full Attack Action: Extra Attacks?
« on: August 28, 2013, 03:29:32 PM »
How many sources of extra attacks on full attack actions are there? Please specify if they stack with the Speed enhancement or not.

Just a note: I'm specifically looking for abilities worded like "When you take a full attack action..." or similar wording like Snap Kick.

  • Speed enhancement/Haste spell/Boots of Speed
  • Slashing Flurry
  • Eagle's Fury
  • Snap Kick
