"Mind magic? That is Saul's area of expertise... Maybe you can try something?" Makala asks the kalashtar.

"As for the raptoran raiders... That seems tough. I wonder if the dwarves managed to inflict enough damage to the leading raptoran and the formation retreated, or if they kept fighting. Also, did the dwarves capture one of these raptoran, to try and get information from them?"

In common Saul says "It sounds like they've never really been able to challenge the raptoran patrols... and my powers aren't all that well-suited to combating another psychic, Makala, especially a flying one."

Makala displays an annoyed face.

"Of course they have a hard time with them... They hide themselves below the ground! How can they learn to fight against them if all they fight are a bunch of goblins or whatever else is in there!?"

She takes a deep breath to calm herself, and continues.

"As for you.... Can't you, I don't know, try to influence the raptorans? I don't expect you go in and start blowing everything up like a few of your kind do, but it's not like you are completely useless against them, right?"

Olgier clears his throat.

"You folks seem awfully agitated, all of a sudden.  Something we said?"

Lazaro addresses Olgier in Draconic, he is obviously somewhat amused at their behavior.  "My companions are having a disagreement on exactly how to deal with the raptorans."

Saul smiles reassuringly to Olgier, holding up a hand as if to say "wait just a second", and then addresses Makala again in common "I am glad you have confidence in our abilities. I do guess that our group will be more suited to combating flying enemies than our new, subterranean friends here. And of course I do have at least a couple of tricks which should be useful against them."

Then to Olgier he says "Sorry, we should probably discuss such things among ourselves later, rather than waste your time.

I hate to ask this but... would it be possible for you to hide some of our people in your caverns at dusk today? I think we are resolved to fight the raptorans if they show up, but I do not want to risk our entire population against them. So I would like to hide most of us somehow, while my friends here and I, and any other who want to join, try to take care of the raptorans.

After we've faced them and know more of what to expect in future encounters, we hopefully will not need your aid. I understand this is asking a lot to house so many, even temporarily. We will certainly compensate you somehow, once we've discussed what kinds of things we might have that you'd be interested in."

Olgier confers with his companions for a few moments.  "We can certainly take some of your people in for the evening, but our space is built for smaller folk than you, and without preparations for so large an influx.  We would be limited to perhaps half of the people you have.  For the others, Margier has a scroll that he says can render a 50' radius undetectable if those in it are quiet; would that suffice?"

Saul says "That is very generous of you! Thank you very much for your hospitality! We will certainly return the favor in whatever way we can." and he shakes the dwarves hands as he talks.

Seeing that the kalashtar seems to agree with the dwarves, Makala continues speaking.

"Now that Saul managed to get the dwarves to not kill us today, we need to prepare for the raids to come. How many of us can hold a weapon?"

The shifter searches in her memories for anyone she knows that might be used... And quickly realizes there's not many. As she feared.

Olgier's eyes widen in surprise.  "I was, perhaps, unclear - a danger of two folks from foreign cultures using a secondary language, no doubt.  What I meant was, Margier is willing to use that scroll in exchange for something, with the something to be determined.  It is, after all, gone once he uses it, so some payment seems fair."

Saul, restraining his enthusiasm a bit, as it seems to be off-putting to the dour dwarves, says "Yes, of course we will repay you for the scroll. I understand. I do appreciate you sheltering the rest of our folks in your... caverns, though. That you are helping us at all is what I meant was generous. After all, you could have left us to fend for ourselves."

He regrets his hesitation as he struggled for the right word for the caverns. He thought of calling it their homes, but he is unsure if they actually live there, and didn't want to risk many other words which might have a negative connotation like warrens, etc.

To Makala he says "Yes, I think we were chosen for the voyage at least in part to be the defenders of the rest."

"That's not what I meant. I know we are the defenders of these people, but I am thinking in the possibility that there's more than one raiding party attacking us. We may be good, but I don't know if we are a match against over a dozen flying creatures ready to battle. As for the other thing I said, it's to define who's going to the caves and who's staying outside."

"I'm normally not the one to say this, but I don't think we should rule out the possibility of diplomacy with the raptoran, either. Who knows, but that their conflict with the dwarves is based on cultural differences or past slights? Granted, we may have to seriously injure or kill several of them to prove we aren't weak if they want to push that way..."

Well, let's start by sortin' out who can handle themselves in a ruckus and those that can't. Those that can't; or have know-how that the lot of us won't do well without can go with the dwarves. The rest can stay here & help us either work things out with the raptorans or help us work 'em over.

After an hour of checking figures and abilities, you come to the following information: All the Experts - that is, everyone except you few Paragons - have access to at least one longspear, one club, and one dagger or punching dagger.  There are fifty light crossbows and thirty-two heavy crossbows available surplus to your own - they're all competent if not good shots - and four hundred seventy-five bolts beyond what you carry.

There are fifty-one Minotaurs who simply will not fit comfortably in the Dwarves' caves without forcing a larger number to stay above ground.  Likewise, there are forty-eight Half-Giants and 56 Goliaths that would just as soon not get crowded underground.  All have what Humans would call slightly above average strength.

There are eight blacksmiths, four farriers, a dozen accountants, a single Healer and twenty more with some basic first-aid skills, a single Artificer, nine bowyers, ten armorsmiths, seven weaponsmiths, fifteen accomplished carpenters, and twenty-three skilled farmers.

"We were just deciding who goes into the tunnels with the dwarves, and who stays out here with us, perhaps to fight the raportans."

"Me is small, and can see no matter how dark it is. Can climb rock as well as tree, so me'll go if you's want," said Dakekk, wanting to help. "Can't speak dwarf though. . ."
