Noticed we didn't have a thread dedicated to sports, and now there is one. Though I have a feeling football (soccer) and hockey are going to be the onnly two heavily discussed.Norway? Seriously? I still hold a grudge, because we played a draw against them in the first game of the 1996 world championship games.
First question: favorite team(s)!
Me, I'm a Boston/Chicago/San Fransico area team guy, hockey and footbal (football). Favorite is hockey, and football (football) is a close second, and football (soccer) is a not too distant third. And US for international, though Finland and Norway are my two favorite non-US hockey clubs.

Finland because they're awesome (you have a not so small amount to do with that, too), Norway because I'm a viking. At least a bit, but I'm proud of that herritage.Paul Kariya was awesome, especially when he used to play with Teemu Selänne. Bloody amazing that duo was. The reason I really support the Finnish team is their team work, instead of stacking their team with NHL stars, they play as a team. Last year's world championship games against Russia? That was what I am talking about.
I used to like Anaheim, but that was only because of a specific player: Paul Kariya. Now I'm pretty much forced to at least dislike them, because of the Sharks. And same with Detroit, I'm a Chicago fan, so by default I'm not a fan of the Redwings.
hooray! Manning is not going to Frisco! This means we can keep Smith and actually be good next year!harbaugh can easily get kaepernick or tolzien to match awex' production of last year. we're talkin' about 3000 yards, 17 touchdowns and a horrible 3rd down statistic. and don't give me turnovers... dude took so many sacks in so few pass attempts, it's not even funny. manning would have made the niners the super bowl favorites (on paper). but well... peyton obviously didn't want the pressure to go up against the superior competition in the nfc. as a niners fan you can only hope that kaep beats out smith in training camp.
So apparently it's Fighting Day in the NHL. Well, Sunday was. I seriously haven't seen violence that severe in hockey ever before. And I'm fucking pissed.
YOu're happy Vancouver dropped? I'm mad that LA went on. You do have one thing right though: screw New York. But Chicago? Chicago's going on. They'd better. Two of my teams are already out (San Jose and Pittsburgh), so I've only got two teams left (Chicago and Boston). From the very beginning I was hoping for Vancouver and Pittsburg to drop. I don't like the Sedin brothers, Crosby is a pesky whiner (a brilliant player, however) and I generally prefer Flyers to Penguins. Got nothing against Chicago, but I had bet some money on Phoenix trumping them, so I am happy.
EDIT: better hope harder on that New York elimination thing. Ottawa needs to start playing better.
EDIT2: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Okay, the exact opposite of what I wanted to happen, happened. F you refs for your continued "vigilance" in this series, F you Torres for trading a not so great player for the best player and making the sport look bad, and F you Smith for being as lucky as you are. Seriously freaking lucky.
Chicago's one of the few big cities that I actually like. It's got some neat sites, great food and music, and a pretty neat atmosphere. In icehockey, I've always had just one favourite team and its that of my hometown. It's not just proximity though, I genuinely like their dedication to their junior programme, game philosophy and the players they put out. Koivu brothers are both from that team, so is Miikka Kiprusoff and while he did not start there, it's the place where Kimmo Timonen earned his stripes before heading out to the world.
Yeah, I guess being from not North America would kind of put a damper on having a proximity based favorite team.....
Philadelphia, what the fuck?
Like real football or the funny stuff Americans do?Philadelphia, what the fuck?
Seriously...
In other news, who'd be up for a Minmax Fantasy Football league this fall?

We almost lost to Kazakhstan. Not our year....On Sunday the US beat Finland 5-0. Granted, Finland played so sluggishly I was wondering if the players were feverish or something.
So Finland pulled a Chicago move there? Nice.
Can someone PLEASE tell me how/why throwing a challenge flag on a non-challengable play (scoring, turn-over, within 2-minutes, in OT) automatically makes the call on the field stand, even when the call on the field is explicitly wrong? Like, look at it for an instant and say "yeah, reversed" wrong? The thinking is that reviewing the play at that point "rewards" the coach who broke the rules on which plays he could challenge. It's pretty stupid; I wouldn't be at all surprised to see that aspect of the challenge system up for review this off-season.
It's Super Bowl time!!!! Let's go Niners!!!!!I predict a Harbaugh gets to hold the trophy and get a Gatorade bath tonight.
but the niners were the better team over 60 minutes and should have won.As someone who was reasonably fond of the 49ers (I'm a Giants fan) last year, largely b/c I'm a fan of defenses and power football in this league of Breeses and Bradies and Mannings.
And, it's a stretch that a team that was down by over 20 points, and who played a poor first half, to be "the better team over 60 minutes."the team that comes back from 22 points despite getting a hard time by the refs is better in my opinion. and as a giants fan: do you remember that fumble by bradshaw in the championship game last year? if that was ruled forward progress, how was james' fumble not forward progress?
One of the very few times I will agree with a Giants fan. The Niners almost won despite the hard time by the refs. that's the better team.no, i'm no giants fan. unbeliever said he was one. ;-)
EDIT: Eh, well, at least we have the most beautiful bridge. I wonder what commercial they would have played if the Niners won? I can't think of what Baltimore even has....
...As a relatively unbiased viewer, this strikes me as quite a stretch. They did not play well. How many times were the Smith's names called during the game, for instance? How many great plays did that great defense, against the Raven's not exactly powerhouse offense, make? That's the prevailing view among commentators, and also the view of Jim Harbaugh.

I was responding to the idea, specifically, that the 49ers were "better over 60 minutes." That statement, as far as I understand it, means that they were better throughout. You can't play what is, at best, a lackluster first half and claim that. You can really and have a great, comeback, but you can't be the "better team over 60 minutes."Bah, what would Jim Harbaugh know about it? Clearly, he's just influenced by wanting to see his brother win the Super Bowl. [/sarcasm]...As a relatively unbiased viewer, this strikes me as quite a stretch. They did not play well. bottom line: it was maybe the most exciting super bowl ever and a great game, but it's really sad that the refs couldn't stay out of discussion.I can't argue with that.
Brilliant game today by Milan, they outwitted Barcelona arguably the best team of the last 5 years....classic catenaccio
Their tactics today were impeccable.....
[...]but they should remember all the times that they were favored by referees in the past.....that's kind of a bullshit argument, you know?
What I meant to say is that referee mistakes are a part of the game,It is no use complaining except for the cases that the referee was clearly corrupt.....[...]but they should remember all the times that they were favored by referees in the past.....that's kind of a bullshit argument, you know?
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/story/2013/08/05/sp-nhl-phoenix-coyotes-ownership.html:shakefist Fuck the city of Glendale -- we're paying an extra 3% sales tax for that shit ..... and nobody goes unless it's versus the Red Wings or the Penguins. They literally can't give away tickets for a Coyotes' game. And they hold the "in-demand" games hostage .... if you want to see them play the Penguins or the Red Wings, you also have to buy tickets to 2+ other games.
Phoenix Coyotes finally have an owner. 4 years the NHL owned them. And now they're a hockey club stuck in Arizona for at least 5 more years ;)
The contract was for 15 years, and it's been 10. But I'm with you. I like seeing hockey spread to those who don't have it yet, but Arizona? I will say that when I've seen games played there, the stadium did get kinda full. But then again I was watching Blackhawks games, and half of the fans were Blackhawks fans cause we're cool like that. Meanwhile, did you know that Seattle doesn't have a team? Quebec doesn't either.I would hope so. If you sell out every game and can't pay the bills, something is seriously wrong.
EDIT: Oh, and point of interest? Chicago doesn't black out games. They still have had a sold out stadium for the past 250-300 games. I have no doubt that there are fans down there that would like to keep the team (especially since they've been doing pretty well lately) but yeah, economically not that hot. Who knows, maybe now that they have an actual owner things will be better for them?
So the NFL is no longer about football it seems. On Sunday, 49ers player Ahmad Brooks hits Drew Brees in the chest, and hard, with a tackle that causes him to lose the ball and the 49ers picked it up. The refs throw a flag for a hit to the head/neck area, and now Brooks is being fined for the hit. If Brooks had hit Brees in any place but where he hit him, he would have been penalized for a low hit or a high hit. In essence, the league has said that you cannot tackle a QB who is not paying attention. And if he gets hurt, we're fining you, no matter what. Even if it wasn't a malicious hit and you did literally everything we told you to do. I'm not (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10007291/whitlock-fixing-nfl-rules) the only one (http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/102074/nfl-nation-says-too-much-qb-protection) who thinks this. (http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:9997989)As a 49ers Fan that play was hard to watch.
what, hockey? Season's been going for about a month ;)Meh... :p
So the NHL is maybe possibly (pretty surely) looking at expansion, and Las Vegas is looking like number 1 on their list of places that get a shot at a team. Bettmen keeps denying talks, but talks have happened, and they recently voted to allow the potential owners to hold a "season ticket drive" to gauge interest. So....
What team name would Vegas have?
i like struve, i think reem's hype is as roided as he is. sure, he can whip G.G. 9 times of 10 but thats not something to brag about.I didn't mind the Overeem fight ..... the ref seriously stopped a murder from happening.
it might just by my preference for struve but i think the ref screwed him a little. maybe i need to rewatch to make sure. not that i think we was gonna pull out of it...
i know how it ended, and have seen the judges card info. what i saw dont match up with what the judges saw. stipe was slowing down but he was still dominate. Junior looked bloated.Miocic didn't slow down any further -- round 3 was his low point. Junior had more rust than a '68 chevy buried in a Georgia swamp.
the ambivalence is; neither of these guys (based on history and what i saw tonight) needs to fight Cain.
Also, i think Bones is going to have little to no problem w/ DC. I was immensely impressed w/ what DC did to/with Hendo, but Dan isnt anything like Bones. Bones has shown 'next level' skill. so unless a doc stops it, or herb dean panics cause someone gets winded... i think its Bones's to loose. Here's my take on that one:
So, Jon Jones is a punk bitch, and I've now lost all respect for him as a human being -- that display at the end of the fight tonight was simply and flat-out disgusting. DC gave a very good accounting of himself -- his lack of endurance is what killed him (that, and the convenient eye-poke that gave Jones a chance to avoid what was building to be an imminent knock-out and to regroup).
All in all, a very good card. That prelim knock-out with Felder was AWESOME! This guy is definitely someone to watch.
One of the articles mentioned that "no one outside of Vegas thinks there's anyone there but casino dealers, cocktail waitresses, and hookers" So my choice would be the "dealingwaitresshookers".
imo, connors 'unorthodox' style is only 'great' against people who don't practice their techniques enough.... or who decide to throw the fight :hmm
But, I thought Stipe was gonna take corm easy... so wtf do i know..I was certainly worried about Stipe's footwork, accuracy, and range. Turns out that enough study of Jones taught DC how to get away with eye-pokes :sh
