It's time to sports!
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:35:57 PM »
Noticed we didn't have a thread dedicated to sports, and now there is one.  Though I have a feeling football (soccer) and hockey are going to be the onnly two heavily discussed.

First question: favorite team(s)!

Me, I'm a Boston/Chicago/San Fransico area team guy, hockey and footbal (football).  Favorite is hockey, and football (football) is a close second, and football (soccer) is a not too distant third.  And US for international, though Finland and Norway are my two favorite non-US hockey clubs.

I like football (eagles) & baseball (phillies).  Hockey, soccer, etc. just don't do it for me... I like the more cerebral games.

Football -- Stillers  ("steelers", for the uninitiated)
Hockey -- Penguins (Sid's back this weekend -- fuck yeah! :cloud9)

I like football (eagles) & baseball (phillies).

Hey, man -- the Eagles have a big case of Steeler envy.  You guys are the model franchise in PA.  I have nothing against the steelers unless we're actively playing them.

So I am offended by your emoticon, and am expressing my anger in the most civilized and non-aggressive way possible, just like the rest of Eagles fans everywhere.

Norway? Seriously? I still hold a grudge, because we played a draw against them in the first game of the 1996 world championship games.

Personally I support Finland, then Russia. Everything else is secondary as long as Sweden loses. I also follow NHL quite keenly and my favourite team is Detroit Red Wings. I also like Anaheim, although their current season has been shit. Their first offensive line is so good they ought to do heaps more goals. Doesn't hurt that it's the home of four Finns, one whom just became, methinks, number 18 in the all-time NHL scoring statistics. Fuck, that guy is the real life Superman.

For football, I follow Champions League and the international tournaments. Apart from that I have little interest for it.

Finland because they're awesome (you have a not so small amount to do with that, too), Norway because I'm a viking.  At least a bit, but I'm proud of that herritage.

I used to like Anaheim, but that was only because of a specific player: Paul Kariya.  Now I'm pretty much forced to at least dislike them, because of the Sharks.  And same with Detroit, I'm a Chicago fan, so by default I'm not a fan of the Redwings.

Well, of course.  Also shin kicking, and that one with the cheese wheel, and the one where the town kills each other.  But those aren't exactly televised.

Hawkeyes.  Because I'm in college.

It's hard to follow what you guys call Football here, because this place pretty much follows Football, Basketball, Collegiate Wrestling, and there are enough rednecks around to justify some Nascar (not it's existence, just it's discussion/display in public forums).

Paul Kariya was awesome, especially when he used to play with Teemu Selänne. Bloody amazing that duo was. The reason I really support the Finnish team is their team work, instead of stacking their team with NHL stars, they play as a team. Last year's world championship games against Russia? That was what I am talking about.

I used to be a Hockey fan.
The NJ Devils neutral zone trap / grab and hold game, sucked.
Then I noticed hits that were illegal in Football, like really illegal.
Then I noticed hits that were illegal in MMA ... at twice the speed of an Olympic sprinter.
Now they have Goons dying from brain injuries in their early 30s,
that Boxers and football Lineman get in their 50s.

Sid probably can't play again.
Gretsky would be sliced in half, during a game.
Some Canadian youth leagues have low contact rules.
I'll wait until the whole game including the pros, get that way.
The old Soviet game was played on larger rinks and minimal contact.

And somebody has to make it work on TV.

?  They have more rules against contact and are less lenient about dangerous hits now.  The announcers actually complain about it from time to time (and in some cases I agree with them, more specifically on the wrap-up rule).  But anyways, typically, the players are safe from injury, thanks to the pads and stuff.  And when they aren't, there's usually a penalty.

Diehard Cubs fan here(at this point - over a hundred years since their last WS championship - is there any other kind?).  I'm a Bears fan as well, but given the choice, I'll watch baseball over football.  I'll watch hockey, but I got into it late, so it's not "in my blood" like the other two sports.  I'm not tall enough to be a basketball fan  :P.

Bears?  Cubs?  Are you a masochist or something?

EDIT: On second thought, don't answer that...

EDIT 2: First postseason appearance for the Hawkeye Basketball team in 6 years!

I am originally from Indiana, so I am a life long Colts fan. I also like UFC (Matt Hughes and Randy Couture are my faves), and I watch racing (some NASCAR, but it is getting boring; and I love the racing formats on the SPEED channel).
The gods have a full band now. Dimbag Darrell(guitarist), Oderus Urungus (guitarist/vocalist),The Rev(drummer), Ronnie James Dio(vocalist) and Paul Gray (bassist). R.I.P.

I am not a Washington Redskins fan, but ...
they're gonna take the Baylor QB.  And gave
up 3 1s and a 2, to get him.  Meanwhile
they got busted about $36 million of their
salary cap.  They'll suck for quite a while.

St. Louis Rams are laughing all the way to the bank ... literally too.
