Question regarding avatars
« on: November 07, 2011, 01:15:17 AM »
How would I go about uploading an picture off my hard drive for use as an avatar? Upload the file to Photobucket et al? I already looked through profile settings, but it's just stuff on site and link access, and link access doesn't seem to like what I wanted to use.

Do that with one of the numerous sites out there for such things, I'd say. That's what I did.

Or if you feel daring, just put the URL into the field and let the other site worry about keeping it up.

Yeah, depending on your browser, there should be a dropdown menu option to open the image in a separate tab or just copy the image URL straight off.

Well, seems like that did the trick. Also, blink animations for the win.

Yea blink animations are very nice  :P

So heres a question about Avatars.
I followed a link over to GiTP, everyone there has some little dudes for avatars. Why? Also, is there a site for those or did they just make them with photoshop them selves?

You'd be surprised how many people on a forum dedicated to Order of the Stick read Order of the Stick.

Made them with Inkscape themselves.

Ahhh I have never read OoTS, heard of it though. I thought GiTP was just a name, like the BG forums.

Daring? I suppose it could change, but does it put extra load on the pointed site or does this forum supply the image after it is initially uploaded?

Fairly sure it's just pulling the image from the URL you give it, not making a copy. So if the host goes down, your avatar vanishes. That's why I'd keep your own copy on Photobucket or imgur or something.

Ya a friend of mine turned me on to the forums, I'm not aware of any back story with Meg and the other BG's. Or any other forums really.. The BG forums here is the first D&D resource I have used. I'm still pretty new to the community..

Ahh, well welcome. Now go read OotS, you'll love it.

Then you should probably download some podcasts. they may stab me for saying this, but who cares if you ignore their chatter. Some of them are long and they may jump into a tangent for a bit, but if you run them in the background, you'll probably catch something you're interested in and pay more attention to it. Some of the advice is pretty helpful, just don't ask me where I heard it from :p

Is... is that image blinking SIDEWAYS?  I swear it is, it's like a reticulating membrane or something...

I used Photobucket too. I didn't know they had a handy function for the direct link; I just always cut the portion out of the URL by hand.

Used to use imageshack for most of my image hosting needs. Getting second thoughts with their recent hijinks though.

I'm trying to use an avatar image that I uploaded to my Dropbox account.  For some reason, that doesn't seem to work.  Does anyone know if there's a restriction against using a https link?

Delete the "s" from https.

That has solved all my problems with linking anything with an https url compared to an http url.
Dropping the "s" doesn't break anything. Or hasn't, yet.

Thanks!  :D  That took care of the issue.  I didn't think that removing the "s" would work.
