Simple Feat Replacement
« on: May 24, 2016, 03:09:21 PM »
Whenever you would select a feat, pick two of the following instead:
• Proficiency with a weapon group.
• +2 to a Skill.
• +1 to a Save.
• +2 HP.
• +2 to the check for a special attack.

If it was a Fighter feat, add the following options:
• +1 to attack rolls with a weapon group.
• +2 to damage rolls with a weapon group.
• +1 AC when wearing a specific class of armor (light, medium, or heavy).
• +3 HP.

If it was a Psionic feat, add the following options:
• +1 PP

If it was a Metamagic feat, add the following options:
• +2 CL for the purposes of bypassing SR.
• +1 CL for one school for the purposes of range.
• +1 CL for one school for the purposes of duration.
• +1 DC for one school (two options)

And thus I just rewrote at least half of the feats in the system! Huzzah!

It needs a couple of tweaks (you forgot armor proficiency), but that looks a whole lot better than the existing system.

• +1 PP
This is worse than Psionic Talent, and that's not a very good feat.

You should probably have meta-psionic equivalents, as well.

Well, all of the boring ones. ;) What about Combat Reflexes, Natural Spell, and Karmic Strike/Robilar's Gambit? Honestly, those are the feats that are fun to take.

I thought that about the others at first, then I noticed it says "pick two of the following".
So you'd get the PP AND something else.

Well, Amechra does say "half".
And reducing the boring half to just that cuts through not just a lot of redundant text, but also kills a sizable portion of the "system mastery trap" feats.

I also see it opening up a LOT of customization for regional, cultural, and tactical feats.
With this you can get +2 Tumble AND +2 with Trip attacks. (Halfling Ankle Cutter Technique)
Or +1 AC heavy armor AND +3 hp. (Dwarven Plate Training)
Or +2 K (arcana) AND +2 CL for bypassing SR. (Drow Defense Subversion)
Or any of dozens of other combos that can be easily and gratuitously fluffed out the wazoo.

This was literally a matter of half a minute of banging numbers together.

For Psionic feats, I guess you could fling together the stuff from the Metamagic section together with some word changes.

I mean, now that I have time, I might as well try to flesh this out a bit.

Some of the things I'm considering:

• As you might have noticed, specific feat categories are better than non-specific ones. For example, the most HP you can get out of a general feat is 4; with a Fighter feat, you're looking at 6.
• I'm considering giving specific feat types a bit more "teeth" - for example, psionic feats could give you three options, but you only get one of those if you aren't psionically focused.

If you're looking to reduce the amount of time people spend dumpster diving through books for feats, this will do that. Of course, a fighter's problem has never really been about having "bad numbers"; it's all that other interesting stuff that they aren't allowed to do. Removing any option that isn't strictly additions to modifiers only widens the gap between spells and feats. Sure, the casters aren't getting Quicken Spell or Natural Spell... but they still have their spells.

I would be bored out of my mind if I had to play a fighter that couldn't user Improved Trip, Combat Reflexes, or Standstill.

I was thinking of doing this for times when people just can't be assed to dumpster dive.

Ideally, this would involve a list of the "cool" feats that attractive people like to take, and then this would cover any other numbers you might want.
