Dakekk counters deception with deception, and the Displacer Beast freezes in place for the briefest instant, just long enough got Dakekk's attack to slam down against its hide and make it howl.  Darius tries to focus as he swings at the elusive creature, but its defenses cause Darius' eyes to water trying to see its actual spot, and he misses again.  Saul throws again, but his attention is divided between the Displacer Beast and getting to a safer position, so his throw loses a bit of accuracy and falls short due to the monster's native magics.  Milo, having taken careful measure of the creature and the battle so far, swings at a carefully calculated spot based on Dakekk's success; the solid THUNK of the blade in its flesh tells him he swung true.  Lazaro's crossbow lands harmlessly in the space where Saul's flask hit air.  Makala sees Lazaro's miss and adjusts accordingly, causing the Displacer Beast to yowl again.  Enraged, it leaps at Dakekk, trying to take a piece out of the one who has done it the most harm.   Its wounds and the motion all around it appear to distract it, though, as all of its attacks fall short.

Darius bites back a snarl of frustration that he cannot seem to locate his foe, and takes another mighty swing.

Dakekk pulls his second kukri from its sheathe and hacks at the beast with both blades with short chopping swings.

Wanting to save the last acid and alchemist's fire flasks he has, Saul pulls a crossbow out his haversack, and fires at the beast.

Dakekk, after his first swipe hits the shimmer and not the creature, lands another solid shot against the Displacer Beast's wounded hide, while everyone else's blows rain in around the creature.

Now gravely wounded, the Displacer Beast makes another desperate leap at Dakekk, but seems too weak to claw through his armor.

Strongly believing this displacer beast must be completely fake and made of complete bullshit, Darius attempts to land yet another blow.

Milo takes a breath and says a short, yet tasteful, prayer to Tymora and takes another crack at the beastie.

With a surprisingly pitiful yowl, the Displacer Beast falls over, twitches once, and stops moving in its puddle of blood.

After a moment of silence in the aftermath, Saul says "Well... I surprisingly feel pity for the beast, but I'm sure it would have wound up attacking some of our people sooner or later, if we'd let it escape. So I think  what we've done was for the best." He stares at it wordlessly for half a dozen seconds after he finishes speaking, as if contemplating whether his words are true or not.

Dakekk walks up to the dead beast and draws his dagger. With a powerful thrust from his scrawny mottled green arms, he skewers the beast's head on the dagger. Placing a long-toed foot on the beat's skull, Dakekk yanks the dagger back out of the displacer beast. "Anyone Hungry?" asks Dakekk. He cleans his dagger with a handful of grass leaves tugged from their roots before returning it to its sheath and pulling out one of his kukri and moving to begin butchering the fallen creature.

"There is no best, Saul, that would imply morality was involved," Darius says
nudging the corpse with his boot, not sure if it's actually gone. "It was a predator, pure and simple. It acted according to its nature, to consume a prey. If we hadn't stopped it here to protect ourselves and those with us, it would have put a stop to another's life instead. We were simply the better predator this time." He scans the surroundings again before continuing, "We got lucky this time. We may be the prey next."
