Lazaro turns his attention to Milo.  "Did you mean me?  My name is Lazaro, not Lazlo, but yes I was speaking the same language as them.  It was Draconic.  I can speak a good handful of languages in fact.  What is it that you would like to know how to say?"

Saul replies to Josiah "Yes, hopefully friends. At least not enemies at this point. They live in a system of very hot caves near the river. They've already been quite informative as to the nature of several native humanoid species living on this world.

The raptorans, winged bird-men, sound like complete xenophobes, and we should beware attacks by them at dawn and dusk each day. There are killoren here which object to any disruption of the forests, so we should try to minimize the amount of trees we cut, and use alternative building materials if possible, to avoid drawing their ire. Perhaps we can use mud and thatch initially, and find a place to quarry stone later.

Finally there is some sort of ancient dragon on this world which has a cult following which worships it like a god. The dragon itself evidently only shows itself on one day per year, but its followers are known to try and infiltrate other societies, presumably to sabotage them.

The river itself is so hot as to be uncomfortable to the skin, but it seems drinkable. So we might consider moving our encampment to there, once we've broached the topic with the dwarves. How goes things here?

"Sorry, had a cousin named Lazlo, real bookish type. Must have got my stream o' thought muddied." Milo says quietly while looking at Lazaro with obvious embarrassment, "Just some basic survival type stuff. You know, 'hello', 'goodbye', 'Where's the chamber pot', 'Don't devour me or turn me into a zombie'. You know, the basics."

Responding to Saul, Josiah says, "Thatching and adobe seems reasonable, and probably better insulation than the wood in any event.  We can get started on that whenever folks agree to it.  Have we talked with the Dwarves about quarry access or trading?  We're going to need stone and metal at some point.

"Is hunting going to be a problem?  Between possibly needing arrows for defense, and offending the killoren with 'disruptions of the forests,' we should talk about food gathering priorities.

"Do we have enough magic to camouflage the buildings?  Maybe we can create some sort of grass-colored paint or something otherwise?

"I guess the good thing about the hot water is we can assume it won't make us sickly.  Easier to start brewing processes too, I hear, for ale and certainly for tea.  Don't know if it grows well here, of course."

"I haven't talked about trading or anything else with the dwarves yet, but it is certainly a priority. I brought them here first to quell their fears that we were dragon cult members trying to deceive them. Once they're assured that we're not enemies, hopefully they'll be amenable to such discussions.

I was thinking perhaps we could use the hot water to heat our houses as well, if we could work out a way to run it through them and then back into the river somehow, perhaps with channels or troughs... but I'm no engineer.

I am not sure about using magic to camouflage the buildings. I certainly can't produce any such effect, but we can ask. Maybe some others can.

I'm likewise not sure about hunting. I'll mention it to the dwarves, and perhaps we can make peaceful contact with the Killoren soon and see what they have to say about it directly.

I think I'll head on over to the ship wreckage to talk to the dwarves now, and maybe get some more answers. Feel free to come along if you want."

Lazaro laughs.  "Fair enough!  I'll teach you what I can.  So, what's your name?  We haven't been properly introduced."

Makala:
You soon locate the Shifters, who had taken on the task of food collection.  They are gathered around a pair of freshly killed hares of some sort with mottled fur and more pronounced tails than those on Eberron, along with a decent amount of tubers and presumably edible grasses.  They are having a heated discussion.

"We need to offer up our thanks to Balinor for letting our hunt succeed so quickly!" says a male, tawny haired, Razorclaw Shifter you know as Eurig.
"The Ashbound object to your waste of good meat in burnt offerings!" counters a female Gorebrute Shifter named Dilys.
Each speaker appears to have a nearly equal number of Shifters supporting their position.

"Enough of this. I don't mean to offend you Eurig, but we are not in a position to offer sacrifices yet. All the food we gather will be directed to feeding us all." Makala points to the camp. "Let's work in gathering more food. Is there anyone else gathering food?"

"Grandfather Rat!" exclaims Eurig. "I am sorry, Makala.  I have been moved to a very strange place where everything is different, and I wanted the familiarity of my prayers and rituals for comfort.

"All of our brethren volunteered to help in the collection of food and firewood.  We were just the first to return with any meat."

"I understand how you are feeling, but I am sure the Hunter will be happier if you live long enough to get another game... Big enough to feed our new community." Makala pauses for a moment. "If you want I can join you in the gathering."

The dwarves look up at Saul and nod as he approaches.

"All right.  We agree: Nothing like this vessel is known to us.  It may well be you are from whence you say you are," says Olgier.

Saul replies with a smile "Neither had we, till we rode it in here.

Unfortunately, our landing was a bit rough... and the captain and engineer were killed. So we're stuck here, likely for good. So we need to set about setting up the safest place to live that we can, which will impinge upon the existing civilizations as little as possible.

We were thinking of setting up our new camp in the clearing next to the river, adjacent to your tunnel entrance. Would your people object to that? We'd also be interested in trading with you for stone and metal, though at this point I'm not sure what we'd offer in return. Hopefully after we discuss it together, we can find something that we can offer that you'd be interested in.

And do the Killoren object only to the killing of trees, or is hunting anathema to them as well?"

Gazing over at the shifters and their meat, Darius dryly interjects, "Might be a moot point, Saul."

Following his gaze, Saul shakes his head. "Yeah... well at least we can try to not piss them off any more."

"Well, they'll know we've been hunting either way if they're that protective about it. If we've cut any tress already, it'll be a giant tell to the raptoran that we're here, so we really should focus on getting out of sight and defensible first off." Turning back to the dwarves, he continues, "Anything we should know about nightfall around here? Pretend we're a newborn child who has no common sense or basic knowledge about life."

"Margier, that's your territory, I suspect," says Olgier with a nod to the curly-haired dwarf.

"Nightfall here isn't remarkable," says Margier.  "Doesn't get much cooler than the daytime, unless it rains or snows - that always brings out a chill in the air somehow.  If it does either, expect all the creatures in the area to be more active, looking for a drink.  Killoren are pretty much nocturnal, of course.  Might be your best bet to set your parlay space aside and be ready for them, rather than let them catch you unawares; some of the Killoren are a bit twitchy.  Guess that goes for everyone, of course."

Lazaro spots Saul talking to the Dwarves and says to Milo, "We'll have to postpone the linguistics lesson, I want to find out what's going on."

He then walks over to stand next to Saul and says, "So, what is the plan?  Are we going to get eaten in the middle of the night?"

Saul says "Sounds like we might meet our Killoren neighbors at night. Perhaps we should invite Makala over here, since we're talking about the nature-venerating Killoren." He tries to wave and get her attention.
