It seems crystalballsoft is being decomissioned and the software is no longer being supported.

Hopefully I'll get it figured out without the FAQ, we'll see.

last online game i was in, we used Discord to play and the dm kept background music going.

That would seem somewhat simpler. Perhaps have a portable speaker and mic so you can manually set the distance.

Ya, I don't know of a way to switch between prebuilt playlists on discord though. I might take a look at crystal ball, see if I can figure it out.

I'm looking for a way to play atmospheric music for players in an online game. What I need is something that multiple people can be logged in on where I can control changing between a variety of playlists, depending on the current happenings of the game. A playlist for calm, foreboding, combat, etc. Anyone know of a good web tool for this?

Other RPGs / Re: Horror RPG System Recommendations?

FATAL

Well it'd certainly get that worst humanity has to offer vibe going. Doesn't exactly lend to simplicity though. How am I supposed to run a narrative atmospheric encounter when my players are looking up the rules for anal circumference checks?

Other RPGs / Horror RPG System Recommendations?
« on: September 29, 2017, 08:37:11 PM »
So I'm increasingly wanting to do a supernatural horrorpunk type game lately but struggling to find a system that works for me (probably in part because the only systems I've played in that genre are Call of Cthulu and AFMBE, once each, so I'm a scrub to the genre).

The setting I'm going for is a sort of slummy mega city where an otherworldly portal has unleashed extra dimensional shadow wraiths of sorts that possess people, give them supernatural powers and drive them toward being the worst sorts of beings humanity has to offer. This has a twofold goal. First, it keeps the terrors human which I think makes them more visceral. Second it lets players experience a "becoming the monster" sort of arch for their characters, where in they face supernatural threats with mundane means and can expend points to draw on their own powers but at the cost losing some humanity (and ultimately losing control of their character to a wraith). Beyond this element I'm hoping to keep rules fairly simple both to focus on atmosphere and narrative and to keep character creation bare bones on the rules end so that players can replace dead characters without to much trouble.

Any suggestions?

Sweet, we can now instantly win every encounter by catapulting this box into a group of enemies and using ventriloquism to say "What if no one ever died?"

Item #293

The Forget Me Stick: Cursed "Weapon"

This +0 Twig causes the user to forget if and why they were hitting the person or monster they were hitting and changes their attitude to Helpful. It also causes the user to forget that the Forget Me Stick has this effect.

"Can I play a Dragon"
This was in a low level 3.5 game.

"This dungeon sounds too dangerous."
PCs decide to skip the dungeon you spent hours building and go back to the bar.

"Could you repeat that please?"

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Lava sharks and monkey pirates

A wealth of excellent ideas here. To update Ive been asked to turn this into a full adventure, and to raise the level to 14+.

Because the campaign story has centered heavily around the dragon cult the pirate captain will be an alt-formed red dragon with dread pirate levels, famed for his unique senses which lead him to all the best booty, drawing talented pirates from around the region to join his crew. The crew will include a variety of intetesting members in addition to the monkeys, possibly including beholders and definitely including an illithid helmsman who issues mental commands to the colossal dragon turtle on whos back the ship is built. The turtlrs name will be Aaaaaarggalon.

the Anthropo-morphic Somethings fit, like anthro-Squid or anthro-Sperm Whale.

Stick one or two cheap templates on them to mess 'em up further.

Conch shell armor = hide armor?
Pirate of the Caribbean has lots of material.

I'd presume Bhu does too.

Where can I find the templates for that?

My brother is running a realms campaign (Im not participating but he asks me for advice alot for some reason inspite of my inability to offer serious answers). Recently he told me that he would include my idea for an encounter with vanarra ninja pirates and their pet lava paraelemental half-iron golem sharks in the middle of a magma chamber, provided I designed the encounter for him. Who has some funny ideas for enemy designs (grafts in place of peg-legs/hook hans on some pirates maybe or something). Anything goes as long as its campy and absurd and can be loosely justified for an 11th level party.

It was actually really fun.  Thankfully we chose classes after rolls, but no casters were allowed.  My only positive ability score was charisma, so I convinced him to let me play a Bard1/MarshalX with no spells.  I had 4 str and 5 con.  We did lots of running away, in true goblin fashion.

Pleasee tell me one of your party members named their goblin Robin, and (even if none of them did name themselves Robin) you proudly sang "Brave brave Sir Robin, He bravely ran away!"

"You're mashed into a pulp"
"Your eyes are gouged out"
"and your elbows are broken"
"You have your kneecaps split"
"and your body burned away."
"Your limbs hacked and mangled."
"and your head's smashed in"
"and your heart's cut out"
"and your liver is removed"
"and your bowels are unplugged"
"and your nostrils get raped"
"and your bottom's burned off"
"and your penis is split"

So this might be a long shot, but I'm looking for an old post (it was the original post, not buried in some thread) that was an impassioned and very well argued defense of optimization against the schmucks who think badly optimized characters are somehow better for RP or that any sort of optimization universally ruins games. It might have been part of a guide someone wrote but not entirely certain.

I don't know that it was on this forum, but definitely in one of the forums frequented by the min/max community (I think it was either here or Giant in the Playground). I'm 80% sure it was posted by someone who frequents this forum though. Anyone maybe have the slightest clue what I'm talking about and where I might find it? :bigeyes

Dessicators from Libris Mortis maybe?

They're undead water elementals. Yeah.

I considered those. They're intended for deserts if I remember correctly though. Their need to drain moisture was from being dried out. If they were living in water I imagine their need to feed on the living would be largely negated.

There's an aquatic version of a Ghoul

I might just use that thanks. Sure wish I could find some low level incorporeals though. Maybe I'll make an aquatic allip.

Being as they are incorporial and dont breathe, how is an aquatic allip different from a regular one? Incorporial undead work just as well underwater as they do on dry land.

Good point, I guess I'm looking to find a way to apply "limited to movement in water only" along with a gaze attack or something to suggest wading in.

Anyone know of a good interaction based highschool setting RPG? I've been searching around and haven't been able to find one but I imagine with the number of highschool setting animes people are into there must be at least one good system out there.
