Do the bear traps just do damage, or do they impose some kind of entanglement or other movement-impairing effect?

Depends.They half movement usually or immobilize when anchored in the ground.

And yes you only got a standard action during the surprise round but you may take a 5ft step.

Darn, I really wanted to play Kingmaker.  Was thinking of running it for my IRL gaming group, and was hoping to get a sense for how it is  :(
