General D&D Discussion / ToB and Publishing Question
« on: August 27, 2023, 08:17:11 AM »
What are the rules as far as publishing further support/content for non-SRD classes/systems?  I know WotC/Hasbro doesn't have the best track record for C&D, and would rather not sink my ship before it's left the port...

EDIT: I ask because all research as yet has been murky at best on the legality of it.  Anything explicitly SRD-based can be OGL/OGC-ed legally, but the further out there stuff is a different story.

As it says on the tin: is there a unified spot where all "official" E6 rules are gathered that isn't 404-ing?

Creations & Ephemera / Pathfinder Optimization Blog
« on: February 06, 2016, 10:30:24 PM »
Hi all,

In an attempt to have a fully centralized resource for Pathfinder builds and class/archetype combinations, I've begun work on a wordpress.com website for optimized PF builds.  The tier system is front and center on the home page (and linked back to the post here), and as I go, I will be adding guides.  I also am under no delusions of being the be-all end-all PF master, and would love it if anyone here would like to contribute a post to the blog and/or engage on commentary on the posts once they go live.  Just PM me and I can send an email invite and make you an author.  There will likely be all kinds of linking to this site especially.

The blog/site will also have a Homebrew/Migration section, and I want to keep the same type of citation for anyone's works as above - e.g. TM20's PF Wizard gets linked to his guide here.  Eventually I will also setup an author section as well (especially if the blog starts getting traffic...which after FIRST MAKING IT was at almost 30 page views not counting my own).  Thanks everyone, and hope to see you there!

Build Goals: Take out the Twice-Betrayer of Shar without the need to dispel his AMFs (that with a build shuffle are Su anyhow).  Take out a Hecatoncheires with little to no risk to self, dragoon style (the goal of the original Chrono-Legionnaire).  Take on and succeed at the 10^100 challenge.

Further Limitations:
-No Unearthed Arcana or Dragon Magazine material will be used.

-No questionable rules from Master Spellthief and Sublime Chord, or chintzy Mind Mage stacking (which is Dragon mag anyhow).

-No form altering magic used in any of the three challenges - not even the 10^100 for Jumplomancy.

-No abjectly custom magical items - only item stacking at 50% additional price per MiC/DMG item creation rules (e.g. to add Sandals of Springing effect to Boots of Skating, add 9,000gp to the cost of the boots - 150% the cost of the sandals).

-No Leadership used.  Minions are squishy, and while this guy can become a Nasty Gentleman (tm), he won't need to ;)

-Psicrystal Feat Progression left out/vague.  The build certainly gets a few more tricks if this is allowed, but for maximum coverage, works as is using its own feats only.  Feat Leech is included as a power known, however.

Other Notes:
-With the FR specific exceptions to Psi-Magic Transparency (which really don't matter, as there won't be a dead magic zone, only AMF and NPF), standard transparency is assumed.  Magic mantle is not in use, so no questionable rules from that, either.

-The regional feat Battle Jump is taken at 1st level to ensure no quibbles about taking a regional feat using Knowledge (local) ranks, and the 'Boing, Boing, Battle Jump!' trick is not used, though it is certainly an option, should we wish to go down the TO road...

-A time-trait modified demiplane is only utilized as a time-saver for growing the node.  There is no need for planar trait abuse, and with the myriad ways of gaining immortality available to this guy, it's ultimately not even a necessity, just a convenience (though it would take an incredibly long time to grow a Class 18 Earth Node...).

Min/Max 3.x / [3.5/Psionic]Transparency Question
« on: November 13, 2015, 08:01:02 AM »
Assuming normal transparency, does Disrupting Blow also affect spells/spellcasting/spell-likes (the ability from Sanctified Mind)?  The text spells out powers/manifesting/psi-likes, though the argument has been made the other direction, so was curious if this was a reasonable extrapolation.

Min/Max 3.x / [3.P]Path of War Observation
« on: October 22, 2015, 11:33:25 PM »
So after reading up on some of the really wicked archetype combos from Path of War and some of the feats, what's stopping a person from taking Martial Training I-IV then once their IL is high enough from a high stat, Advanced Study to pick up lvl 8 or 9 maneuvers/stances?  Imagine getting to isolate the BBEG spellcaster as a magus, or arcanist playing magus wannabe with 9th level spells...has anyone ever looked into some of those interactions, and if so, what's the verdict?

Also, any character + Golden Lion = bard replacement potentially, let alone on a zealot.

EDIT: Nevermind - answered my own question.  That being said, if they ever put out something akin to the Soulknife lite ACF a la the Blade something Arcanist archetype....that will be one nasty gentleman to cross.

Gaming Advice / Transcend Mortality and Iron Heart Surge

We all know the standard way of ridding ourselves of the "you die, you're screwed" end of this spell - would IHS be able to rid the character of the condition (and likely the entire spell, but by the time that's relevant, moot point)?

You Break it You Buy it / More Monk than a Monk [TO/Questionable]
« on: July 25, 2015, 11:06:23 AM »
DISCLAIMER: This is mostly a thought exercise, and hardly on par with my usual TO shenanigans.  That being said, this would be an insanely fun character to play, especially if you want to play Goku but don't want to get Sun Wukong's staff to the head from an angry DM.

That being said:

While hardly broken by any means, it seems possible per this discussion that taking Monastic Training and Tashalatora after taking Hidden Talent can dovetail most of the monk class features (the ones that matter, at least) onto just about anything.  That being said, what can a monk do for the three feat tax?

Let's first off assume that odds are, we can't stack some of the better stuff, like the speed increase (though that could be entertaining).  This means we have two instances of FoB, the AC bonus, and the speed bonus.  Know what works just fine without interfering with FoB or DS?  Rage.  Since we're assuming we can't stack the speed bonus, might as well pick up the DR variant as well - it won't amount to much, but it's better than a null set when we paid 3 feats to get it.

Let's also assume we're going to follow the same paradigm of all unarmed attackers and snag every method possible to increase unarmed damage - there are several ways of throwing this at range using feats alone (northern style comes to mind, as does ring the golden bell).

Finally, since we don't like relying on others, we'll start off as either a dragonborn, a raptoran, or both.  Refluff to taste.

Gee, if this thing had the standard full BAB most people houserule on it, it would play eerily like a certain anime with lots of screaming and spiky glowing hair...

Gaming Advice / Hidden Talent, Monastic Training, and Tashalatora
« on: July 24, 2015, 02:59:39 PM »
After looking over the prereq's for Tashalatora, there doesn't seem to be anything mechanically preventing this from dovetailing the best parts of the monk onto basically any class, provided you pick up Hidden Talent (meeting the requirement of being able to manifest 1st level powers).  This also begs the question: what the hell happens if a monk does it?  Super speed, or simply a set of class features to ditch for ACFs?  It's obviously far from the most optimal idea out there being a monk+, but it could certainly be entertaining.

Min/Max 3.x / Metanode Power feat clarification
« on: July 17, 2015, 12:33:16 PM »
So here's the relevant bit :

Quote
Metanode Spell Feat: Metanode Power feat (Prerequisites: Node Manifestation, manifester level 1st). While the manifester is in an earth node, his metapsionic power bump point costs are lowered by an amount equal to the class of the earth node layer he inhabits x2.

If I'm reading that correctly, that's basically like an extra quori power shard with value equal to node level, without the 3/day restriction, correct?

Gaming Advice / [3.5]Restrictions on Power Stones?

All things being equal, can one purchase a power stone of discipline-specific powers (or whatever the psionic scroll-equivalent might be, if more applicable)?

Creations & Ephemera / Website Development/WordPress
« on: June 12, 2015, 11:16:54 AM »
This also seems to be the best place to leave this here - I am primarily (and now that I've moved, solely) a web developer by trade, with no regular 9 to 5 job (so 100% freelance and loving it).  If anyone knows someone who needs a website put together, feel free to forward them my email address ( info at stormwolfdesign dot com), or point them to my domain, http://stormwolfdesign.com .  I specialize in WordPress mainly, but can write code for almost anything (and a regular raw HTML site is a ton easier than WordPress, believe me).  Thanks!

Creations & Ephemera / Thoughts on an actual E6 Book
« on: June 12, 2015, 11:13:49 AM »
Hi all, I have a question - do you guys and gals think there would be sufficient demand for an actual E6 book?  As in a consolidated, fine-tuned resource John Q. Public could walk into <insert game/book store here> and buy, along with an online PDF?  I've had a lot of ideas bouncing around for this, along with the usual plethora of class ideas, and I would think this would scratch an itch a lot of players and DMs have with the general D20/3.5/PF systems.  I'd love to read people's opinions on the matter!

Min/Max 3.x / Metal Music Builds
« on: July 14, 2014, 10:42:18 PM »
Just what it says on the tin : as I get time, I will be posting builds inspired by the regulars on my playlist.  Though fair warning...Metal Church - Gods of Wrath will likely make my usual gamebreakers look utterly tame :)

PS: Mods - if this would better be posted in Handbooks, let me know.  The idea is a gathering place for thoughts, and since I'm keeping it 99% 3.5, this seemed the best spot.  Thanks!

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Warlock Rebuild
« on: September 29, 2013, 08:34:24 PM »
Hi guys, my search-fu is failing me...did anyone happen to snag my Warlock rebuild stuff, like the bloodlines and such?  I couldn't find em here or on BG.

Min/Max 3.x / [3.5 E6]Ain't Your Fairytale
« on: September 29, 2012, 01:51:22 PM »
So I'm working on an E6 Shifter Druid, and trying to make it as bad ass of a wolf-theme as possible.  Thus far I have Dire Wolf wild shape (capstone feat) using the Razorclaw shifter breed for Claw/Claw/Bite and free trip, Druidic Avenger for Rage and Pounce.  Going off the base of 25, that'd be a Str score of 33 at level 6, and one nasty puppy to run into.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'm going on the basis of feats at 1,2,4,6 (even numbered pathfinder progression), and since he loses his animal companion for the class variant, maybe one additional will be used for Wild Cohort to get it back (Natural Spell at 6th might as well be a class feature).  Possibly worth it to go with VoP since he won't need items to speak of, and then snag Touch of Golden Ice for Venomfire goodness?  Random ramble for the morning while I drink my second cup of coffee on my fresh Ubuntu system :)

Min/Max 3.x / [3.5]Simple Nature's Avatar Question
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:44:37 AM »
Couldn't find an "ask a simple question" thread, so making one here for it.  I seem to recall a workaround for being an eligible target for Nature's Avatar.  Are you just required to have the Animal type?

Other RPGs / [1st Edition AD&D}Looking for an old Dragon Article...
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:30:48 PM »
In particular, the one that had the very first (like, late 70's or so) incarnation of the elemental mages.  They had their own spell list, access to the druid and wizard spell lists, progressed like a druid (only with spells up to 10th level), and were considered also a fighter of 3/4 their level.  Doomkill, Power Word : Ignitus, Miniball, and Multiball were several spells unique to them, along with Lead Spray.  Does anyone know where I might be able to find this article?

Min/Max 3.x / [3.5]Druid Werewolf
« on: March 25, 2012, 12:09:19 PM »
As in is there a way to create this without eating LA, such as through spells/race/PrC's?  And it would most likely be a Werewolf Lord/Dire Wolf or Legendary Wolf base, adjusted for size if HD allows for purposes of Wild Shape (if it can be achieved via Wildshape).  I'm seeing something akin to using Bite of the Weretiger to put claw attacks on a Legendary Wolf, then advancing HD on the form shaped into if possible to increase size (and further increase size and combat ability via Aspect of the Wolf before Wild Shaping followed by Animal Growth and Avatar of Nature).  Gargantuan Pseudo-Werewolf Lord with pounce, trip, and claw/claw/bite.  Think Bloody Roar :)  Any further ideas?
