"We should leave quickly. Lets inform the most senior guards of the situation so they know about the barn, and remind them about the prisoner and that damned circle. It's late enough, we should probably leave early morning, and hope this storm passes."

Bhu, we have access to horses, correct?

The ride back is a touch spooky.  Several times you'd swear you were being watched from the shadows.  One of the constables greets you as you return.  "There's been an incident.  Four men are dead, and no one saw what did it."

"Oh for f-  What do you mean an incident? Who is dead and how? Is the prisoner still in the circle?"

If the prisoner is still contained, Elizabeth goes to examine the bodies, taking 20 on Search for a total of 37. If not, she searches the room.

'The...prisoner is still accounted for.  Old Joe found the bodies.  Says the McClaren family invited him over for dinner, and he found whats left of em.  He's in a bad way.  Getting stone drunk down at the Inn."

I should take a look at the bodies. Maybe they can tell us something.

You all ride out to the McClaren farmhouse in the pouring rain, still with the feeling of being watched.  There are two constables on guard when you get there, as the women and children were apparently unharmed.  There are four bodies in the yard, cut up pretty badly.

"I can't see much between the light and the train, but those aren't animal marks. You see the edges of the wounds? They're to straight and even for teeth or claws. That was done by a blade. At a guess, probably a large knife.

Elizabeth searches for any obvious clues as to who else might have been here.

I was planning on taking 20 for the roll (which would be a 37), but if I have to roll:

Search:
Rolled 1d20+17 : 4 + 17, total 21

Spot:
Rolled 1d20+1 : 7 + 1, total 8

OOC: Looking back at my sheet, I think I have an extra +1 I can't account for in my Search score. So, the mod should probably be +16, for a modified check of 20. Also, I have a magnifying glass, so if it would be relevant for any given clues, add an extra +2 for finding those.

There are tracks quickly washing away that might be a human beings.  They come from the forest behind the house, and leave in teh direction you came from...

Elizabeth asks the women and children if they saw anything.

Sense Motive = 1d20+10

Rolled 1d20+10 : 5 + 10, total 15

They seem to be in shock.  The children are curled into balls and scream if anyone so much as touches them.  The women are pale and on edge, refusing to move from their childrens side and staring back the way you came.  Interviewing them might take time, and something tells you leaving them here for the night is a bad idea.  Also, you have an old man swiftly getting drunk who was a witness back in town.

Elizabeth tells the guards: "Get these people to a safe place to stay the night in town, by other people. Keep at least two people on guard at all times, and keep someone who can see them. We'll travel back to town with you. I need to talk to someone quickly."

Once we get back to town, she seeks out the guy who is getting smashed.

"I need to talk to you urgently. I need you to stop drinking for the time being, and I'll buy your next bottle, afterward. I need to know what you saw. I understand it might sound crazy, but I need you to be as specific and honest as possible."

Elizabeth tries to see if she can get a pot of coffee made, somewhere, to help him sober up, and tries to get him to eat some bread. Once he starts talking -> Sense Motive = 1d20+10.

"They came from the forest...they looked like people till they got close up and you realize they ain't natives.  Least not any I've ever seen.  They looked ... hungry."

It's about this point you realize he's been staring past you instead of at you this whole time.
