D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Angels?
« on: October 22, 2018, 06:05:47 PM »
So I'm playing a planar shepherd tied to Syrania.  The inhabitants of that plane are "All Angels".  Well beyond the 3 angels listed in MMI, are there any other true angels printed in any other source?

I'm spending most of my time wild shaped as a planetar at the moment, but it is a long way to go to reach the solar level.  Just curious if there are other angels that may have some utility to them.

Gaming Advice / Prestige Classes
« on: May 03, 2017, 06:17:29 PM »
Is there an actual rule anywhere that states you can only take a prestige class once?  If there was a little 5 level PrC, you "finish" it at level 10, could you take level 1 all over again when you level up?  You still qualify for the PrC after all.

Gaming Advice / Immunity to Wind?
« on: August 25, 2014, 12:03:55 PM »
I checked the List of Stuff, but didn't find anything that helpful.  I'm looking for a way for a creature to become immune to all wind effects.  Got a diminutive critter that will have to deal with all kinds of inclement weather, and I am searching for a way to negate that.

I know the Storm Domain granted ability can help a little bit.  Anything else like that out there?  It can be a spell, feat, class ability, item, etc.  I'm open to any suggestions at the moment.  Thanks!

Gaming Advice / Radiant Holding?
« on: February 25, 2014, 12:20:58 PM »
So in the 2nd party Fun Finds thread, someone just mentioned Radiant Holding, a +3 weapon enhancement found in Magic of Faerun (pg. 140).  It makes your projectile deal 1 point of Force damage and the attack is resolved as a touch attack.

OK, so does any other damage apply, or is it always just 1 point?  Could you still stack on skirmish damage?  What about Favored Enemy bonus?  Weapon Specialization?  If you have the Power Throw feat, can you add power attack damage to the toss?  Can you put this on a Necklace of Natural Attacks?

If this is more in depth than just a quick question, maybe a mod/admin can move the thread.

Gaming Advice / Druid Animal Companion
« on: February 13, 2014, 07:42:57 PM »
OK, I need to know if I'm reading this too literally or what.  When you look at the Druid's animal companion the advancement table shows what your furry buddy gains as you gain levels.  Every couple of levels your companion's STR & DEX go up, and the text down below states:
Quote from: Str/Dex Adj
Add this value to the animal companion’s Strength and Dexterity scores.
So when you hit druid level 3, you add +1 to STR & DEX.  But at level 6 it seems that you would then add +2 to STR & DEX, not simply add another +1.  So if you keep the same animal companion until level 20, it would have gained a total of +21 to STR & DEX, not just +6.  Nothing states that the bonuses listed are supposed to be cumulative and not individually added.

For comparison, the bonus tricks indicate this:
Quote from: Bonus Tricks
The value given in this column is the total number of "bonus" tricks that the animal knows in addition to any that the druid might choose to teach it (see the Handle Animal skill).
It specifically states that is the total number of tricks.  The other entry for STR & DEX makes no mention of total.

Depending on how you interpret it, the entry for bonus HD and natural armor could be read the same way.

So, am I just being dense and reading too much into it?  Or are animal companions really just way better than I realized?

Gaming Advice / Age Categories?
« on: February 10, 2014, 04:32:53 PM »
Besides true dragons, kobolds, and phaerrim, any other races have actual "age categories"?  (Obviously I don't mean middle aged, old, venerable.)

Gaming Advice / CR 2 Monsters with Fast Healing or Regeneration?
« on: January 21, 2014, 12:09:07 PM »
Just what the title asks, folks!  Any decent monsters in 3.0 or 3.5 that have Fast Healing or Regeneration and are CR 2 or lower?  No templates please, just base monsters.  Thanks.

Gaming Advice / Fighter Variant: Pugilist?
« on: November 08, 2013, 01:48:12 PM »
My googling has not produced the desired results, but I'm sure I've seen a fighter variant from Dragon magazine called the Pugilist.  Specifically they get to ignore non-lethal damage at level 1, yes?  Can someone help direct me to the right source.

Thanks!

Edit:  And I just found it.  Dang!  Just ignore this thread.  :banghead

Gaming Advice / Creature Alignment?
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:01:35 AM »
Anyone know where to find the reference that when the Monster Manual states creatures are "Always X" for alignment that it only actually means like 99% of the time?

Gaming Advice / Pearl of Speech?
« on: February 12, 2013, 06:28:43 PM »
I seem to recall reading about an item on these board that you can give to your animal companion or familiar so that it can speak.  I think it was called the pearl of speech, or something similar.  Anyone have any ideas what the actual name might be and/or where it can be found?

Gaming Advice / Subtypes granting flight?
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:30:31 PM »
What happens if a creature with the [Air] subtype wild shapes into a form that cannot usually fly?  They retain their innate flying abilities because they still have the subtype?  Or does the Alternate Form rule about losing original movement modes trump the subtype?

Min/Max 3.x / Need Some Lawful Assistance
« on: February 08, 2013, 02:52:09 PM »
I'm making an app for a PbP game that is level 20 gestalt.  There are 3 BBEG's, all of whom are undead (2 vampires & 1 lich).  My character is a Marut, which will take up one entire side of the gestalt.  It is the other side that I am having trouble with.  My backstory is that my Marut was originally tasked with destroying the lich, which everyone thought he did about 300 years ago.  But now the lich has re-appeared and my guy is being ordered to finish what he started.

So we have a creature of pure Law that needs to be able to hunt down and kill the lich and destroy his phylactery once and for all.  Not to mention dealing with the various other undead (and some living) mooks and whatnot.  (He will be part of a team though, so he does not need to accomplish this task solo.  Other teammates have not been chosen.)

I was originally going to just go with Cleric 20 (with Mechanus domain), but that is feeling a tad uninspired at the moment.  So I'm looking for suggestions on how to make this guy pretty much the embodiment of Law & Order.  Prestige class suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Also, he has lots of decent immunities from being a construct, but his HP kind of suck and his Fort save is definitely lacking.  How can we help out with that?

I had considered using the UA druid that does not get wild shape but instead gets WIS to AC & Favoured Enemies.  If you strip away some of the nature aspects of it, the class makes a pretty good fit since it gets tracking, speed boosts, and a few more skill points than cleric.  I'd probably swap the animal companion for the elemental ACF in Complete Mage and use the few sub levels from Planar Handbook.  But still seems like it could use a bit more LAWfulness.

The Divine Magician ACF from Complete Mage was also somewhat appealing, but would it be worth it for this guy?

Pretty much any source is available, and the DM expects powerful characters but will avoid anything obviously broken.  Using Fractional BAB & Saves.  I've rolled stats that are not awful, but aren't great:  15-15-15-13-13-10 (drop the 10 since no CON score).

Suggestions?

Gaming Advice / Animal Companion Handbook?
« on: December 28, 2012, 04:08:16 PM »
Is there a handbook on maximizing the effectiveness of your animal companion?  In the handbook list I saw 2 guides for families, and 1 for (super)mounts.  But nothing dedicated to just animal companions.

Am I blind, or do we not have that guide?

Gaming Advice / Find the Path
« on: October 31, 2012, 11:36:28 AM »
I need a way for an 8th level gestalt PC in Eberron to reliably and frequently cast (or otherwise utilize) the Find the Path spell.  It does not have to be that spell exactly, but if there is an item that duplicates the effect, or a creature that has that innate ability, etc.

Classes for the gestalt can be from pretty much anything besides Faerun.  Ideas or suggestions?

I'm going to (maybe) be using a Tibbit in an upcoming gestalt, assassin themed game.  I was looking to create a PrC that enhances the shapeshifting ability somewhat, but focused largely on the Tibbit's innate abilities.

Does anyone know if there has ever been a PrC like this already compiled?  If so, links would be awesome.

What I'm thinking about thus far:

1) PrC would be 5 levels long, 3/4 BAB, d6 HD, good reflex, and probably 6 or 8 skill points to somewhat emulate the favoured class of Rogue.

2) Pre-reqs would include ranks in the Control Shape skill.  Normally this is only for afflicted lycans, but I wanted to include a few new uses for this skill in the PrC.  Like hitting a DC 15 check lets them change shape more quickly, or a DC 25 check lets them keep some of their magic items active, even though they are absorbed into their new form.  Suggestions on good uses for this skill, and appropriate DC's, would be cool.

3) Other pre-reqs would be the Quick Change feat from Savage Species, and probably at least 1d6 of sneak attack.  Any other pre-reqs that might make sense?  Ranks in other skills, or other feats perhaps?

4) Class abilities that I've been toying with:  Keep scent ability even in humanoid form, use DEX for skills that are usually STR based, enhanced speed in cat form, lowered STR penalty in cat form, some means of always landing on their feet (i.e. unable to be rendered prone).  Other suggestions are welcome!

5) For giggles, maybe hand out bonus feats from the April Fools Day Fabulous Cats article.

So, anyone willing to offer input on what I have so far?

Gaming Advice / Better Fast Healing?
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:46:08 PM »
Besides the epic feat, is there any other feat that lets a creature with fast healing improve it?

I am playing in a no-magic game, but the PC's do have fast healing.  So a way to bump that up an extra +1 or +2 HP per round would go a long way to helping survivability.

Gaming Advice / Low Blow Feat
« on: March 30, 2012, 05:28:32 PM »
Quote from: Races of Faerun, pg. 166
As a full round action, you can enter an area occupied by an opponent who is at least one size category larger than you.  You can then make a single melee attack at your higest attack bonus against this creature, who is considered flat-footed against the attack.
So my question is, do you have to be adjacent to your foe to use this feat?  Can you double move to enter their square, kind of like how a charge lets you double move?  Just a single move?

Gaming Advice / Ghost Pixie?
« on: March 29, 2012, 12:02:07 PM »
So the base creature for a ghost has to be:  "aberration, animal, dragon, giant, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, or plant."  So what is the lowest ECL way to get a pixie to qualify?  Is Half-Dragon template it, or is there something less than +3 LA?

Gaming Advice / LA's for creatures in OA?
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:07:00 PM »
I know I saw a PDf somewhere that gave the LA's for several of the new monsters found in OA.  Anyone have a link to that somewhere perhaps?

Gaming Advice / Displacement & AoO's
« on: February 03, 2012, 11:54:07 AM »
Perhaps a newb type question, but the discussion came up in my arena and just wanted some additional feedback.  Can the Displacement spell prevent AoO's?

Quote from: Total Concealment
You can’t execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies.
Quote from: Displacement
However, unlike actual total concealment, displacement does not prevent enemies from targeting the creature normally.
Does that mean target them with spells specifically, or just with any attack, even AoO's?
