Honestly, I'd rather start at a higher level... I feel like I'm in a lot of low-level games at the moment, and I'd like a change of pace.

Not sure how the rest of you feel about that though.

As long as higher is still single digits, fine be me. Would feel a little odd to leap into Athas above everyone but the Sorcerer Kings, more or less.

What's the source limitation on character building materials? I would assume any other campaign settings would be out, but are there any limits beyond that? Any chance of any homebrew classes or class fixes being allowed or adapted to the setting on a case-by-case basis? I'd be OK without it as an option, but it's nice to know for sure.

As for levels, I find the 6-8 range tends to be serviceable.

6 would be acceptable, although you should kep in mind that Athas does not really hold up well to higher level magic. Athas is also notably one of the fiddlier settings-encumberance, food, water, and all the rest is supposed to be tracked. It probably wouldn't be too difficult if you had a rain cleric or water cleric, but it's worth keeping in mind.

@ VennDygrem: Sure, I can take it on a case by case basis. Just ask what you'd like. I'd prefer to keep the game at around medium op, and i'd focus on exploration, rather than trying to railroad you into a plot. (Like so many later 2nd edition Athasian modules did. Being Forced to Escort a Sorceror King was probably the worst)

*Sorcerer

Daaaaaaamnit, if we're starting at level 6, even if I go Wizard/Swiftblade, I can't get into Swiftblade at 6. Oh well, guess I'm a normal Wizard (though with a very odd spell selection) until next level, then? Or I can go Cleric/Swiftblade No I can't, no Athasian clerics get the Time domain.

Templars are okay with Psionics but violently opposed to Wizards, correct?

For anyone looking for the Dark Sun pdfs from Athas.org, I was able to find my collection buried on a back-up drive. So I've got all of them, including the adventures. Which is helpful, given their website appears to be down.

And just doing an interest check, how many players do we have ready to go? Since I think we have enough to get the board and start everything up.

Well, assuming it's alright to hop on, I've got a Changeling Barbarian 4/ Warshaper 2 ready to go. Gonna go two more levels into Warshaper, because Morphic Healing.  :plotting

There are no changelings on Athas, sadly. Stratovarious might be able to find you the PDF's, if you require them.

I've got all of the Athas.org 3rd files, if anyone needs them. For those not familiar with the setting, it's got very restricted rules on what's allowed. Dark Sun PHB only, often.

I think I need them - I only have the three PDF's off of the site. (Main book, two prestige class indexes, I think)

Here you go. That's all the files from Athas.org, plus a few others that might not be relevant. The big one to start with is the Player's Handbook.

Lifeshaping stuff looks really cool, but seems a bit tricky to work in. Maybe a Bard who found some old tools and is trying to figure out how to make his own?
