Opening Scene, a Fracas in Frakas
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:57:05 AM »
Frakas, it is a city that is nigh-unavoidable when traveling the eastern edge of the continent of Parus. A port city and capitol of the country of Frais.
You approach the city, walking from the west. You've been here before. But it doesn't seem quite normal. Even from a distance, you can smell the town. Someone's been letting the fish go bad, and a lot of it. The wooden buildings have a dinge to them, recently treated against the rain, most like. And it is raining, which says even more of the smell of rotten fish that it is so unabated, striking your nostrils with enough strength to make your stomach feel like it is filled with tapioca.

This leads you to the decision to not stay in the city proper for the day. Instead you walk up to a gate booth, where passes are sold for various forms of travel, and the scheduling for such things is known to the attendants. They are also used as very cheap sleeping spaces. There is only a single attendant at the counter, and there is a line of several people (16, if you count) waiting for service. There are many posters on the wall, to read. Some are advertisements for local performers, others are for help wanted with various tasks.

A little girl finishes putting up her own poster as well, then turns to see you, and others like you. Her eyes go well beyond just 'wide', but more from awe than fear. she then focuses on some canines that are with one traveler, grins wide, waves at the dogs, then runs off out of the gate booth, towards the city.

Looking over the posters, there are a few that are of note.

Quote
Need the Service of a Fast Ship and Brave Crew
Two of the most feared ships in the world have been spotted in the waters about our country.
The Ruby Red, and the Zatara.
The local merchants guild is willing to pay a crew to scout the waters to report exact locations,
Or if they are even, in fact, nearby.
Possible bonus pay if the ships are led away, or scuttled.

Merchants Guild: Large Stone Building, at end of Docks. Near end of Port Street.
Well, if the trading ships cant get rid of the fish, that might explain the smell.

Quote
Plea for Returned Loved Ones
It is not enough that there are two groups of brigands in this city, now our friends and family are being kidnapped.
The 14 houses are doing no more about this than anything.
We just want our family members returned to us, safely.
Please, Help.

Contact for the families is Mrs. Yanques, 2355 Main Boulevard

Our Chief concerns are "The Gang Namenski", and the "Blue Scarab" groups.

If you have any information, please report it at the Main Constablatory, In the main square, just off of Merchants Park, at the crossing of Main Boulevard and Marshpoint Road

Quote
Find Mr. Snuffles
He's my big pet.
Bigger'n me.
Really furry, with dark striping on grey fur.
Looks mean, but he's really nice!

If you see him, please come let me know!
Ms. Tinamari
17 Baker Street
The little girls poster.

Quote
Report any Spies
A reminder to all citizens, if you suspect that any travelers are spies, you have a duty report such matters.
We know that agents of Gahst travel through here unlawfully, but we require the means for proof.
Gahst, the country to the east. So what?

You notice that the area is quiet. Looking around you realize that there are others who are as odd in appearance as you, you took note of this when the little girl did, but now the others in the Gate Booth have noticed as well, and they are quite nervous.

Largely oblivious to the terrible smell thanks to the air filter he wears, Grey adjusts the hood of his cloak to make sure it's not his "creepy" eyes drawing the stares. He says, his voice muffled by the filter, "Mr. Snuffles, huh? Sounds right up your alley, GruGruk."

Grugruk chuckles at Grey's comment before his stomach growls. Fermented fish are a tundra delicacy. Ignoring it, he reads the poster.
"Your right. This shouldn't be too difficult. Korth loves to track. Would you mind?" he asks Grey. His hand reaches into Grik's fur, he scratches the massive wolf's chest.

Sckhar reads all the notes. "If I had to pick one, I would choose to hunt the two gangs, but that's just me. Or the pirate problem. This smell is terrible."

Grey says "I could make you an air filter. They come in handy for more than getting rid of fishy smells. It can give you a few minutes of water breathing, and help protect from airborne poisons as well."

"I'd rather stay away from the sea. My hounds don't do so well with boats. Maybe we see about these gangs, and I'll keep an eye out for Mr. Snuffles," says Grugruk

A tall, broad shouldered figure, with a youthful innocent face and shock of red hair but a thoroughly adult seeming build, walks a little hesitantly up to GruGruk.  "Um, excuse me, uh sir. I overheard... that is, you said "Korth loves to track." Now I don't know why you would be, as I've only just arrived here but, well, were you talking about me? You see, my name is Korth and..." he trails off awkwardly.

A young woman of average height and lithe build walks up behind the red-headed boy. Her golden, strawberry-blonde hair flows softly around her head, and strangely seems to hardly be affected by the dampness from the rain outside. She stands out from the dreary doldrums of the grey, languid surroundings; her complexion is vibrant and healthy, she wears bright colors of blue, red, and pink, and she has a commanding confidence which is mixed with a calm, collected demeanor and sharp, attractive features. She looks human, but... at the same time, somewhat beyond human. At least what passes for humanity around Frakas.

"Korth, we've practically been traveling with them in the same direction all day. He probably overheard you talking earlier about hunting for food. You have been talking an awful lot about food today."

Sckhar measures the big lad, then the girl.

"I guess Grugruk was speaking about one of his friends", pointing to the dogs,"but I guess I will not waste your accidental introduction. My name is Sckhar and this is Grugruk and Grey", pointing to each of them in turn. "Nice to meet you."

"It's not my fault this smell has been hanging in the air all day. Do all human towns smell like this?"

Turning to Schkar "Oh, I see. But yes, nice to meet you, Schkar, Grugruk, Grey. I am Korth Ixen-Ibrik if additional distinction is necessary, and this is Serafina T'Kenna"

The girl smiles warmly. "No, some towns smell worse." She chuckled a bit, then turned to the other men. "Most call me 'Fina' for short." These new people seemed nice enough, though Fina had learned not to trust every stranger she met, a lesson learned quite a while ago. Still, they were introducing themselves, and anyone that was going to take advantage of her would not do so out in the open in front of the guards. She extends her hand in greeting. "It's a pleasure to meet you all." Her hand is warm to the touch, despite the cool, rainy weather.

Korth read through the posters, all asking for help with one problem or another, some very dire. "Groups of humans are stealing from other humans and now they're kidnapping them too. Are you, he says to Schkar, Grey, and Grugruk, planning to hunt these "Namenski" and "Blue Scarab" people? If you are, I would like to join you in doing so. It may not appear so in my current incarnation but I am somewhat accomplished in combat. Fina is also advantageous to have around in an engagement. If she would also like to hunt these robbers and thieves, of course. What do you think, Fina?"

"Well," began Fina, as the moisture in her clothes and skins from the rain outside began rapidly evaporating, "I'm a bit averse to water, but chasing these pirate ships sounds exciting! I suppose the old addage about fixing the problems closest to home first rings true here, though, so I suppose we could go after these local brigands. Maybe some of these incidents are related, though. That would be fantastically fortunate! Imagine, thwarting several major capers with just one mission!"

Fina's eyes sparkle a bit with anticipation.

This guy here is Korth too, says Grugruk. He pats the shoulder of the canine he'd been scratching. Sorry 'bout the confusion. Grey here's already introduced me; however, my friends here are Grik, my druidic companion, Bast and Lux, orc master hounds, and my guide, Korth. pausing as he talks to gesture at each. Continuing, Maybe we should head over to the constablatory and see what they know? Seems like It's the take we most readily agree on anyways.

Grey shakes the girl's hand, but doesn't speak during the discourse. He is dressed somewhat strangely, with his face covered by an odd filtration mask of some kind, and the hood of his cloak shading the rest of his face. He wears a dark robe with armor visible beneath it, and a crossbow hanging beneath the cloak on his back. Those who can see past the shadows would see the odd, pupil-less grey eyes that hide beneath his cowl. Those eyes linger on Korth during the conversation between his traveling companions and the newcomers.

Grugruk reaches over and pulls both the poster concerning the gangs, and the poster about Mr. Snuffles. He figures that it would be a good idea to have the information with him. Folding the posters down to about the size of his palm, he slides them into Korth's saddlebag. Anybody have a map of the city? Or at least know their way around it?
