Chapter 3: In Times Like These (continued...)
« on: November 28, 2011, 09:26:07 AM »
The tall devil simply replies "Not in my contract." and pulls out a cigarette and begins to puff on it.

Quote
"Ris-Janna." He turned to the rogueish woman. "Do you have any skill in making mundane disguises?"

Raoul scratched the back of his head.

"Or do you happen to know anyone who does, Sammy?"

Xuuvosic pulls out a dusty book and starts flipping through, "If you motherfuckers want to do your suicide run now, I'm ready to drop your asses off. Otherwise, I'm gonna see what I can dig up on the Balor and whoever might be holding his leash. That is unless your contract permits volunteering mission critical information, Sammy."

The devil shrugs and says "I got nuthin'. It's hard enough keeping up with Baatoran politics, much less what passes for it in the Abyss."

"It makes sense to gather as much information as we can, but what resources do we have? We're a little desperate here." Cade seems impatient, but hesitates when it comes to actually going on the suicide-run to try and trick the general.

"I'm always in favor of a plan backed by information, but let's try not to drag this out any further," Marlowe said, fiddling with a glove idly. "It feels as though we've been standing here for weeks."

Snapping the book closed, Xuuvosic looks up, "OK fuck it. Lets do this. Here's the plan? Marlowe RJ get the package. Raoul you're distracting Chokes-on-Dicks with the forgery. A disguise just ain't gonna cut it. Cade, you're with me assisting with pick-up from the pit. Gimme a buzz with the sending stone when ready to split. I'll do the drop off right in the middle of camp. Are we good to go?"

With a grunt, Ris-Janna nods. "Fine. Quick and simple. Hardest kind of plan to screw up. Let's just... get this over with." With that much decided, she sets about readying everything she needs... mostly involving making sure her weapons are ready for killing, just in case.

You all pile into the pit, like some kind of clown car from hell, and in a flash Xuuvosic finds himself standing in the middle of the burning ruin of what was until just a few hours ago the beautiful city of Myth Drannor. Smoke rises from the still smoldering ruins of several buildings, and you can hear screams as the demon army goes around finishing off the last of the elves and their allies. Several lesser demons can be seen tossing aside rubble, evidently digging out survivors to finish them off, and Xuuvosic finds himself mentally going down the list of the types which he knows could pierce the illusion shielding him from sight.

After about a second and a half Xuuvosic grinds his teeth with impatience. "Raoul, get your skinny ass out here! You've arrived and I'm fucking outta here."

He doesn't mention Marlowe or Ris-Janna for obvious reasons.

Just as Raoul's words leave his mouth, Xuuvosic hears a low humming sound, much like when you run a wet finger around the rim of a crystal wine glass. It quickly grows in intensity and pitch, and when he and Raoul exchange glances, Xuuvosic sees Raoul's face waver, as if it were an image projected on the surface of a soap bubble.

Then the whining sound rapidly rises to an astonishingly loud level, and Raoul pitches over face-first in the dirt, with blood visibly leaking out of his ears as he clasps his hands to his head. Then there is a sizzling sound, and a tremendous flash as an arc of what looks like lightning shoots out of a bent spire nearby which has a large round crystal on it. It looks like some kind of a retransmitter, perhaps related to the mythal somehow.

Simultaneously a second bolt shoots out in another direction, and Xuuvosic sees it strike one of the demons that had been previously moving rubble around looking for survivors to finish off... except in that split second before the bolt hits, he realizes that it looks just like Raoul... if he were maybe 1000 years younger.

Then Xuuvosic himself is hurled backwards from the crash of the lightning hitting Raoul, and as he flies through the air he imagines that he can feel every eye in the smoking ruins of the city turn towards him to see what all the noise and fireworks are about...

"Ugh. Well... a distraction's a distraction. Cloy." Ris-Janna acts quickly, tugging at Marlowe's collar to motion for him to follow. As she climbs towards the exit of the pit, her black leather collar looks to fuse into her skin and grow, extending tendrils of shadow up and down her skin until she matches color with the shadows around her. As she climbs out and looks around to survey the situation, parts of her seem to meld into the shadows, making it hard to discern where the environment ends and Ris-Janna starts... if one can see her at all.

Marlowe pauses to murmur a few words and wave a hand, flickering out of sight completely before climbing out of the pit and moving to follow Ris-Janna.

Cade scoops Raoul up with a shovel and bucket climbs out of the hole, only to see Raoul quivering like a time-displaced jellyfish. Despite the massive negative attention, he attempts to grab the fallen ally and return him to the pit as part of "Plan B."

Plan B involved making all this shit up on the fly and running with it.

As Cade leaps back into the pit with Raoul's unconscious body, and Marlowe and Ris-Janna creep out of it, there is a flash accompanied by smoke and brimstone nearby, and a towering figure appears less than 20 feet from Xuuvosic. It is wreathed in flames, with huge, bat-like wings, and orbs of red flame peer out of its skull-like head where eyes should be. In one hand, it holds a bolt of lightning like a sword, and in the other a whip of flame. It's booming voice echoes as if it comes from the bottom of a hole as deep as the universe. It looks right at Xuuvosic and says

"What did you DO, maggot-spawn? I warned your lot not to use temporal magics within the mythal, as the resonance field could cause them to expand catastrophically! Do you want to DIE?!" He drags the last word out, and raises his flame-whip as if preparing to strike.
