As you begin to descend into the volcano, the smile on the balor's face is replaced by a frown. Noting the direction of his gaze, you turn to see that a bizzare creature that resembles a centaur made of shadows has materialized just down the slope from your positions. The balor opens his mouth to scream a warning, but before the first word is even out, the creature seems to blink out of existence and appear hovering over the open caldera.

In the same instant, you also become aware of a second balor, identical to the first, even down to its equipment, which is now standing directly beside the first one, with it's flaming whip and sword drawn and ready. Fruuzberglag's words finally come out in a rush "Get the artifact and get out of here! I'll try to keep the phane away from it!"

You hear a whispery laugh that seems to come from the shadowy figure floating over the volcano. Then the voice says "What do you think you can do to me, fool of a demon? One touch from me will leave you frozen in time forever, while your own strength is impotent against me here. Go play with yourself while I claim my prize."

At this command, the newcomer balor drops his whip and launches a series of attacks with his longsword gripped in two hands against his twin. The flames on both of their bodies (and whips) have died out within the zone of dead magic which seems to encompass the area around the volcano's caldera.

The phane then says to your group "I do thank you for leading me to this prize, though. My Master is sure to reward me well for it. After all, it is one of the few real threats to his existence. Your group seemed the perfect pawns to insure that we could lure it out of its hiding place with little risk that it actually be turned on us."

As the demonic blood shoots out of Fruuzberglag, accompanied by small gouts of flame, the general hisses, but the wounds do not deter him. He spreads his wings and hurtles himself at the shadowy figure, and although it looks as wispy as a cloud of smoke, his grasp does not pass through it as you'd expect. His hands seem to become partially translucent themselves where they grip it's smoky flesh, and the phane gasps in surprise as it finds itself held fast in the balor's iron grip.

Fruuzberglag grins grimly and says "You're not the first overconfident fool I've choked to death, and you won't be the last, either."

Xuuvosic jumps and rolls down the caldera, hyperventilating to prepare himself for a search beneath the lava surface.

As he plummets toward the surface, Xuuvosic is sure he can feel the presence of something underneath the lava. It fills him with an overwhelming sense of dread and of his own insignificance. Just as he reaches the surface and is about to plummet beneath it, a featureless black sphere about two feet across rises out of the surface to meet him. As he contacts it, all time seems to slow and stop around him, and instead of the spine-snapping impact he expected, his hand gently touches its surface. Then his mind is awash with images, most of which he can make no sense of, and the feeling of unimaginable power which threatens to overwhelm and consume him.

Marlowe's eyes widen, and he dives for whatever meager cover the caldera can provide.

As the flood of images, sounds, and sensations pour into his mind, Xuuvosic feels his own sense of self being overwhelmed at his insignificance. He knows that what he is seeing is something on a scale that he's never even imagined before, and that the... thing.. that he is touching is as old as existence itself, and that somehow it has experienced the universe... He manages to pull himself back from the sensations, though, and resist being lost in them. As the grander images recede, he sees countless smaller images break off from them in the periphery of his vision. In those images, he sees the Lochnar itself in a thousand times and a thousand places, and in all of them he sees smoking ruin and destruction.

As he pulls back, though, he also feels the malevolence of the Lochnar, and realizes that it is not an object. It is sentient, and what he felt most of all as the images and sensations poured over him was a vast and unimaginable hatred... for everything. Somehow he is sure that this thing wants nothing less than to unmake the universe.

He also feels that it will let him use it, and that it has the power to take him to literally any place at any time, and that he can take along anyone he wants. All it would take is a mere thought... Somehow, it feels eager for him to use it...

Ris-Janna wastes no time in getting the hell out of dodge and scrambling for the pit.

Marlowe, likewise, heads down the mountain for the edge of the dead magic zone, trying to stay as hidden as possible.

Raoul probably never really left the pit in the first place, or never got very far, but he goes for it anyway.

Cade shifts his stance, and suddenly it seems like his body is vibrating in space somewhat, making it more difficult to determine exactly where his body is. He picks up the pit and heads out of the dead magic zone.
