1st Level Human Commoner
« on: June 03, 2012, 03:17:02 PM »
So, my DM has decided to run a game where everyone starts as Level 1 Human Commoners.  We will be rolling our stats normally (4d6, drop the lowest).

So, the question is, what is the most broken build for such a character?  To clear up any confusion, my DM fully expects me to aim for the most broken character I can come up with.

My choices thus far - Shape Soulmeld (Prereq: 13 con) Magic of Incarnum p 40
Take this twice with Dissolving Spittle and Rage Claws.  Invest my one point of Essentia into Dissolving Spittle.  I am now a Level 1 Commoner who can act normally all the way down to -9 HP, and I can deal 2d6 acid damage every round with a ranged touch attack.

Anyone have a better idea?

Chicken-infested feat and a spell component pouch. Infinite chickens.

I'd advise using this handbook.

Take the Chicken-Infested flaw from Dragon 330.

Quote
Chicken Infested
You've got chickens
Effect: Whenever you draw a weapon, or pull an item out of a container, you have a 50% chance of drawing a live chicken instead. No, we don't know where the chickens come from, its your character.

The fun is that drawing from a spell component pouch is a free action, thus you can literally draw hundreds of chickens in a round if you really wanted to.  Builds taking advantage of this can be found at http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103915

Thanks for the quick replies!

The Commoner Handbook is a nice resource, and I'll have to remember it.  As for using Chicken Infested, my DM has a blanket ban on anything from Dragon Magazine.  Though I may see if I can convince him to let this one slide.

Interesting ... not really C.O. but still very useful.
this handbook.
Resourseful Buyer is extremely interesting in a Magic Mart context.

Mercantile gets you lots of money up front, useful for
getting too many goodies out of the local magic mart.

DavidWL has probably the best Commoner 20 build ,
almost totally within the bounds of legit builds.

Pun-pun and The Hive are do-able with level 1 Commoners.
Requires a quite bit of T.O. and DM massaging.
How much crazy or arguments do you want to have ?

Pun-Pun is great, but my DM won't let me get away with it (I've had that discussion).  As for Fey-touched, I doubt I'll be allowed to use that one.  DM wants us to start as straight-up humans.

Thankfully, I don't need to worry about going 20 levels of commoner.  Only the first level is commoner.  Once we start gaining exp, we can use it how we see fit.

Sooo ... if you bang around "town" long enough you'll find
the guys who'll sell you Spell Casting Services, ala the PHB.

Pick spells wisely = as good as it gets.

Mercantile will let you buy more spells,
but if that kind of thing isn't available, don't.

Handle Animal max'd and buy a lot of Cows will
let you trample via a stampede just about anything.

Mules only cost 8 gp, and have stats about as good as riding dogs. Buy a bunch, max your ranks in handle animal, and hide while you say "Get 'em!".
I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.

It only costs 30gp to hire a War Troll for a day.  Hire a bunch, send them out to beat the snot out of a high-level party and take their stuff.

Well, after running a few of these by my DM, I have been given the following restrictions.

1st Level Commoner
Human
Only allowed skill focus, and only on craft skills.
3 copper to my name.

I still consider that a victory.

Thanks everyone!

Do you still get the customary free set of clothing?  From the sound of it, he's not going to let you start with an explorer's outfit and sell it for 5 gold, but the cheapest clothing, a peasant's outfit, costs 1 silver.

The peasantry earns 3 gold per month and has to spend 2 gold per month on necessities (DMG, p130).  Are you playing commoners who had to flee their homes with just the clothes on their backs and the contents of their pockets?

If you actually put ranks in profession, you should be able to earn at least 14 7 gold per week.  Even if you splurge on a “common” standard of living, you can save up 11 gold per month.  But really, what commoner spends every night at an inn?  You could afford up to a “poor” standard of living and still have 16 or so gold left over each month.
