Mythic Sagas: Chapter 1
« on: January 23, 2014, 10:09:27 PM »
The spellcasters begin this chill morning by preparing their spells for the day while the others ration out some of the salted meat and mushrooms that you took from Litr's kitchen.  Finishing his preparations for the day, Bjartr begins to absently chew on a piece of salted meat as he searches about for where the human-skin scroll had been placed.  He chokes a bit on the meat, trying to finish with it too quickly so he can cast his spell and learn what was written in the odd pidgin language.

He casts his spell and reads the faded note on the stiff leather scroll, a slight look of confusion on his face.  Looking up to see some of you watching him, he turns his eyes back to the page and reads it aloud.  "'Breed furiously.  One day you and your children will be needed and rewarded.'  It's signed 'Quinixar.'  What kind of name is that?"

Skulda says "I don't know, but it is a name, and that is at least something to go on... I will ask the spirits about this name, when the eyes of the bird are not needed for scouting.

Ah, it is so good to see the sun again. I feel the darkness of the cave washing off of me, finally."
She finishes cheerfully.

Agni follows Skulda's comment.

"Aye. Not that I feel like the darkness was clinging to me, but it is good to be outside."

Then he inquires Bjartr.

"That's the message written in there? That... doesn't mean anything to me. Any ideas?"

Einar shakes his head.  What kind of man would write a letter to trolls encouraging them to breed?

Finished with breaking his own fast, he says "We should leave soon, we need to catch up with the caravan."

Skulda says "We can try... " and sends her bird of and upward to scout ahead and get a "bird's eye view" of the trail, to see if she can get a glimpse of the caravan ahead. She sends it before the casters have prepared their spells for the day, so that it can get some extra flying time in.

"Hmm.. sounds like someone is breeding up an Army." Hymir ponders for a moment. "Where have I heard that name before?..." He lets his question hang in the air as he racks his brain for anything he might know.

"It sounds like advice you would give a man, Hymir." Thorgrim said. The warrior wondered 'Perhaps it's time I made some children. About ten would be good.'

He looked to Einar. "I had a dream friend. I think...I may have awakened my fury."
Hmm.

" Hahahaaa.. actually your right. It's eerily similar to the positive affirmations I tell my self everyone morning when I wake. " He cracks a smile before going back to a rather serious look. " Hmmm... I've never heard the name Quinixar before, but its very reminiscent of names I know of from nearly-forgotten tales.  All those names belonged to fiends.  Most of the tales that mention them deal with their ravaging of Midgard, and their eventual binding into the stonehenge circles that dot the globe. "
Hymir gives a concerned look to his friends.

"I agree with Einar," Bjartr says.  "Even as slow as the caravan was going, with them a day ahead of us, without horses it will take us a while to catch up."  In response to Hymir's insight on the scroll's signature he says, "well, a fiend's name might make sense.  Didn't Agni say that tanarukk have fiendish blood?"

Skulda thinks for a moment, then says "If we could find a graveyard, or a site sacred to Hel, I could get us all horses to ride for the day, with saddles, if catching up is our main priority.

I could also examine the items we got off the dwarf, and giant, to try and determine more precisely their exact dweomers."

"I say we move as we are for now and you can work on the items when we stop later. Should we find a graveyard on the way, the better..."

" Hmm.. I'm certain there was a small graveyard around here somewhere. " Hymir spoke slowly as he was mentally recalling tales and storys of the local area.

Bjartr sneers a bit at Skulda's mention of wanting to find a holy site of Hel.  Woe be unto any sickly soul who falls into her care, he thinks to himself.  Trying to be of help, and steer his traveling companion away from the lady of the dead, he thinks back and plucks out a tidbit that may prove useful.
"There were some battles in this area several hundred years ago.  If my teachers were correct, the people of one side of that war preferred interring their dead, rather than burning them.  With a little luck, we might see some barrow mounds from the road, as we continue on."

Skulda's raven flies ahead of you, through the forest down the slope toward the road.  As it approaches the site of the butchered horse, she notices there is a figure standing in the road, inspecting the grizzly scene.

Skulda says "There's company ahead. One figure, looking over the place where the trolls attacked Moeid's family." She directs the bird to fly in a bit closer, so she can get a better look at this person (race, age, easy to read emotions, holy symbols, weapons, etc).

Agni smiles wryly.

"Great. All we need now is more trouble. Is it a tanarukk, Skulda?"

Skulda moves the magical raven in for a closer look, and to her relief, she sees that it is a somewhat exotic looking woman, perhaps coming from the darker Rashemi stock, or from some unknown land. She is slim, and has almond eyes and brunette hair. She is dressed in exquisite dark clothing, and a pale leather cloak. On the inside of the cloak, you notice little white blocks, each in its own little half pouch. She moves breathlessly along the ground, stirring an uneasy feeling about her as she looks up and sets eyes upon the raven.

"Looks like a human woman, but a bit unusual. It's hard to say more. Let's go introduce ourselves."

The raven lands on the corpse of the horse and begins picking at a bit of flesh, stirring up a cloud of flies.

Einar shakes his head.  "Too many unusual things happening, I don't like this."  He follows along willingly enough however.

"Agreed." Thorgrim, the sturdy seven-and-a-half foot tall barbarian said. "If it's but a lone woman, then we have nothing to fear."

She certainly can't be any stranger than Hergierr's mother. he thinks to himself.
