It's news to those who refused to listen the first time.

Or not, if they continue to keep their fingers lodged in their ears.  :rolleyes

Windows 10 is beginning to annoy me.

First, it was a little button in the side.  That's fine, that's cool.  Not upgrading, but nice to have.

Then, pop ups began to appear.  "Upgrade today!" it said.  Easily ignored, clicking anywhere not on the fairly small pop up did the job at ignoring it, but I found it... irritating.

Now the pop ups are getting bigger and bigger.

For the love of shit Microsoft, you keep this up and I'll upgrade to Linux.
Mudada.

Depending what you do with your computer, that'd be more of a downgrade. Or 'continual headache'.

The biggest and only problem I've had since upgrading to Windows 10 (forcibly upgraded due to hard drive failure; I totally suspect Microsoft is at fault /gg) *ahem*...is that my computer refuses to shut down completely regardless of whether I tell it to shutdown or go to sleep or just close the screen (laptop) forcing me to have to hold the power button to shut it off then turn it back on whenever I come back to my computer.

Apparently, a ridiculous amount of people reportedly have this very same problem.

Apparently, I haven't been able to fix it yet.

The only problem I have is that my computer still intermittently crashes because of graphics driver failure. At least the driver's stopped uninstalling itself (or, more usefully, it gets reinstalled).

For about a week, every time I turned on my computer it would try to install Windows 10 in the background. The only notification I got was a system tray icon saying Windows is installing new updates. I had to manually stop the update every day for a week.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

They made a "mistake" and the windows10/update was marked non-optional for a time.

Wife tried to update. Got an error message instead. Apparently it's a pretty widespread problem, with some convoluted bullshit fix that we can't be bothered with.

Microsoft: "Update. Update! UPDATE!"

Wife: "Fine."

Microsoft: "Just kidding, you can't update!" ... "Update. Update! UPDATE!"

Honestly I think it's the whole "ads on the start menu" thing that really turned her off of Win 10 for good. Or, y'know, until we get a new computer and are forced to get Windows 10, the same way we were forced to get Windows 8 when her old laptop died.

Finally taking the plunge, and upgrading from Windows 7 to 10.  "Free" ends in 2 weeks (July 29), so I guess it's time.

Is there any way to take advantage of this to do a clean install?  I.E., install a free copy of Windows 10 on a newly formatted hard drive rather than upgrade from Windows 7.  Thanks.

Edit: Google is my friend.  Turns out it's pretty easy to do a clean install.  At least the instructions make it look easy :)

It is. Did it myself the other day - installed from DVD and it asked if I wanted to blow away the existing install. Just said yes. You do get the fun of a long update cycle once that's done though, and reinstalling all of the programs you need. That part takes longer than the actual install does.

Heh, still running Win7. I can't imagine paying ten bucks a year per game to remove ads, what a rip off.

You have to be somewhat tech savvy, sic know how to google your problems, but I think it's possible to clamp down on some of Win10's bullshit.
* Settings.Personalization.Lock/Start can disable those ads and while you're digging around in there you can disable showing a lock of usage tracking (no idea if it actually disables the tracking from MS pirating it through).
* Under Settings.Update you should probably disable auto-updating until you're sure if MS's new malware content is right for you but mindful they can bypass that anytime they like because Win10 is pretty much a trojen. While you're here there is a bunch of other crap to turn off to, like saving your location all the damn time and the whole restart when you're in the middle of things bug.
* Buried why the fuck down Settings.Update.Windows Update.Advanced Options you can disable MS's torrenting feature and reclaim the net that you are paying for.
* Settings.Network & Internet.Wi-Fi is also where you can turn off it's auto-connect Wifi Sense.
* Tinkering in Settings.Systems.Notifications can go a long way into turning your computer back into a computer instead of a cell phone.
* The Skype/Office prompts form the devil him self, which apparently continue even after you install the damn programs, are actually applications that can be uninstalled from your control panel.
* One-Drive's crap has to be turned off in One-Drive's app.
* Edge's bullshit can be found in it's own settings too.
* There are apparently three fucking "SmartScreen" DEP settings that need to be turned off, you'll have to google them because I threw my hands up saying I quit after I realized Dicrosoft decided to include more than one.
* Firefox and Chrome both have plugins that trump Cortona's forced Bling crap. Settings.Privacy has an ass load of sliders you need to run around turning off. Actually, come to think of it you should just turn her off anyway, open her, hit the notebook, settings, and turn stuff off.
* Speaking of apps, Sumatra PDF or Foxit Reader are apparently good pdf readers (I suck and still use adobe).
* Like Google you can opt out of MS's tracking provided displayed content (link) for as long as you keep the cookie installer so there should be a Firefox/Chrome plugin to persist it.
* Win10 did continue the god mode folder, if you're unfamiliar with it make a new folder on your desktop and very specially name it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} It's icon should update once renammed and it'll open a folder containing most of your settings in a long and easily searchable list.
* You also need to do all of this under a different account. Right now you're probably on your Microsoft account and everything you do is auto-synced up no matter what you try to do, turn off, or opt out of. You need to make a new Local account.

My next update will probably be Ubuntu, between Wine & PoL it looks like the community is working hard to provide patches for gaming on a Linux.

Problem is they're beginning to disable some the ability to switch things on/off, even with registry or gpedit settings.

http://betanews.com/2016/07/28/windows-10-anniversary-update-takes-back-control/

I'll give Windows 2016 Server a shot after I tinker with it as part of my job. Currently run 2012 R2 now, as by default as should be for a server all the bullshit is off by default. It nice and plain, and fugly, just the way it should be.

Reason for moving up is just DX12 and any new interesting things for Hyper-V, I like to run sandboxes.

Ultimately I'll end up having family to worry about down the road. What I probably need is to look into something like NTLite with a profile that unfuckifies things with its install profile. I can't keep up with visiting every little hidden switch.

I'm not unwilling, but it'll take a PC gaming industry revolt to move primarily to Linux. I'm proficient, I just don't have the extra time to tinker with Wine & such.

I kind of seen that coming. They moved to forcing Win10 to forcing updates on Win10, it was just a matter of time before their bait-and-switch reached a more personal setting level.

You can try reaching out to 3rd party solutions or maybe use your router to ban MS's IPs from connecting.

Yeah like RD's problems getting Wine to work is pretty much the only reason I'm still on windows. But my laptop is outdated enough at this point everything I can run well enough on it should have patches out on it. Like heck I just got into Skyrim last month, kind of behind the times...

If I could get Wine to run all the Total War games, Skyrim and SKSE (preferably WITH ENB for memory reasons, which is a whole new can of worms), and the various Dark Souls titles, I'd go about setting up a partition and giving it a test run. But so far, only DSI works, so...

Well, Windows 10 just changed my boot-up log-in password on me.

Since this computer sits on my desk at home and I'm the only one that uses it and it has no really sensitive information on it, I left my boot-up log-in password blank.  It defaults to my user profile, so I just have to hit <Enter> or <space-bar> to log-in.  Yesterday, I finally got around to linking this computer to my Microsoft account.  When I booted up this morning, I found my previously blank password is now the same as my Microsoft Account password.  Bleagh!

Yeah, but that's what linking to your MS acct does. Just go to Settings>Accounts and choose 'sign in with a local account instead.'

To prevent this in the future, choose the option to (paraphrasing here) 'sign into each app separately' at the bottom of any app that asks for you to sign in with your MS Acct. You only have to do it once for each app.
