"Jeezus Paladin is OP"

"I don't want to fight the room full of CR 1/4 enemies"

General D&D Discussion / Anyone have Undermountain maps?
« on: March 11, 2015, 10:45:18 PM »
I'm going to be running an Undermountain campaign soon with the 5E rules and Fantasy Grounds. I'm not looking forward to photoshopping all the secret doors out of the undermountain maps. Anyone have player versions?

Min/Max 3.x / [E6]The Divine Zealot
« on: February 03, 2015, 03:38:46 PM »
Super simple character I'm building because I suddenly feel inspired by fun finds and need an E6 character on hand for random games.

Ghaele(SS monster class)5/Crusader 1

First 5 levels getting full casting, full base attack bonus, all good saves, and 8 + int skill points.

My plan is to sink my WBL into a constant item of Divine Sacrifice and become Tyrael, supporting the mortals and smiting everything.

DM has allowed my to take the crusader level in spite of the creature classes not normally allowing it, in lieu of a capstone ability.

I'm really digging the "burn HP for damage, then heal it back up again immediately" concept. Any other tricks that fit into E6 that I should consider?

Off Topic Fun / Trying out LiquidSky (a game streaming service)

Blatant Referral Link

Short version is: You are watching streamed audio/video of your game, and piping your inputs to their servers. Highly dependent on input delay, but it means shitty computers in places with good internet will be able to play top-end games.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / XP Formula help
« on: July 08, 2014, 11:49:24 PM »
I need the 3.5 XP formula in a format that allows it to be compared against the level of the player, meaning it needs to incorporate the player's level into the equation, so it can be called directly on the player.

Example:

If leveling was 1000 per level, the equation would be as simple as "if (Player.XP >= (Player.Level*1000))"

Unfortunately, the XP requirements for 3.5 are a little more complex.

EDIT: In case anyone is wondering, I'm feeding my 3.5 addiction by writing a text based RPG which will draw heavily on 3.5's rules. It uses some new mechanics (rolling initiative from Exalted for example) and skills/feats are being handled differently (They increase naturally with use, and can be trained like in an Elder Scrolls game).

Min/Max 3.x / Leaving 3.5 behind, who wants my stuff?
« on: July 08, 2014, 12:13:48 AM »
I've become disillusioned of late with 3.5's mechanics, balance, everything. I just don't enjoy it anymore. Therefore, My handbooks are up for grabs. If a mod could transfer ownership to whoever asks, that would be wonderful.

I'm not going anywhere though. I just won't be doing 3.5 anymore. Mistborn anyone?

Creations & Ephemera / My (Sporadic) Gaming Stream
« on: May 22, 2014, 10:54:40 PM »
I play games by request!

I'm currently playing one episode per day of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.

Filler content is usually League of Legends, Guild Events in Guild Wars 2 (massive boss fights with hundreds of people involved), or something slower like Infinity Wars or Hearthstone.

If you want to request a game to be played, either PM me on twitch or here with the title of the game and a reason it would be entertaining for viewers.

Our D&D game has been on hiatus for a while, so I'm making characters again (either to play or use as villians).

Magic-Blooded Hellbred (Spirit)

Warlock4/Binder1/Ur-Priest2/Eldritch Disciple4/Hellfire Warlock3/Eldritch Disciple

Gets Persistent Divine Power at level 10, 6d6 Eldritch Glaive (3 attacks) by level 11, and 9th level spells at level 19.

Feats and Skill Points are covered. Gear is entirely undecided. Ideas for gear? Also, I'm required to have Spell Focus (Evil). Any good ways of giving all my spells the Evil type? Also, since I'm using a glaive, is there a way to attack adjacent opponents with it? Shorten Grip is a thing.

Standstill (No opposed strength check, but no damage) vs Large and in charge (Keep the damage)?

Current Gear:
Chausable of Fell Power
Otyugh Hole
Nightstick
Reliquary Holy Symbol
Gauntlets of Heartfelt Blows

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1163241/Dice%20Roller.html

Taking feature requests.

Current Functionality:

• Multiple Dice
• Nonstandard Dice (d5 anyone?)
• One-click rerolls
• Positive and Negative modifiers.

Trying to keep it as mobile-friendly as possible, so non-smartphone devices can use it. (works on e-readers and caches so you can use it offline!)

To-Do:

• "Add a die type" dropdown, so you can have exploding d6s and normal d6s in the same roll.
• All Rolls shown
• Exploding Dice & Drop the Lowest/Highest checkboxes <<In Progress
• Multiple Modifiers

Bugfix To-Do:

NaN result when Modifier is null. All fields have default values now. NaN still results on null, but you won't naturally encounter a null result. Null value for Modifier results in 0.

I'm having some trouble with my group, generally in the optimization priorities between players and appropriate numbers in encounters.

We have one player who IP-proofs is characters as much as he can. He always strives to be at least 10 higher AC than the highest known attack roll, have attack (or trip/grapple) rolls 10 higher than the highest known enemy opposed roll, etc. So far, we've kept him challenged by attacking him with immune creatures, but the immunities are getting less relevant as he gains items to counteract them, and they weren't really satisfying, since he pretty much couldn't interact with many of them. (FYI, this is The Monk Who Couldn't Decide build, which is doing surprisingly well at level 9. The link is outdated though.)

Another player is newer, playing a Astral Construct psion. He's our baseline. His ACs are about the same power as the average enemy bruiser, and he isn't using any recharge tricks, so he plays conservatively.

The Wizard is an Elven Generalist/Spellfire Channeler (Channeler being given full casting progression). Basically just a control wizard who eats wands to nuke on occasion.

The last player is a Warforged Gish, focusing on the Arcane Lightning+Fire ring combo with Wreath of Flames. He just walks up to things and does 12 or more d6 in an aoe around him.

One player who can ignore combat rolls, one player who is average, and two players who can spontaneously drop  enough damage to kill off most creatures without trying. Depending on the encounter, the ability of the team varies from (CR=Group ECL) to (CR=Group ECL+3). This sounds great, except that it is entirely random when the power shifts. The psion is the most common no-show, so it's not an optimized player not attending. It just seems to be a matter of them walking all over encounters until they hit a perfect storm of enemy abilities that completely screws the party.

Notable fights:
• CR 10 taken out by an explosive rune book (party was VERY shorthanded that day. Level 7, only 2 players)
• CR 13 taken out by the wizard's shivering touch.
• Monk dismantled an entire encounter because he had AC high enough to ignore the attacks of every enemy in the room, went in alone, and closed the door behind him.
• 2 people failed a saving throw for an inhaled paralysis poison at the start of an under-CR fight, almost ended up in a TPK.
• Party attempted to kill off an entire room of enemies by dropping a fireball through a skylight. The enemy boss was incorporeal behind them, collapsed the roof, and dropped a cloudkill into the rubble.
• 3 Party members failed save vs a Mind Blast, getting stunned for multiple rounds while Vrocks performed a Dance of Ruin.

(We are gentlemen about breaking the gentlemen's agreement. Explosive Rune books and Shivering Touch are now established tactics in the campaign world.)

Note that none of these ended up feeling like fair fights. The balance point swings from too easy to too hard with the slightest nudge, and the balance point continually changes based on the Wizard's spell loadout and the RNG of the player's saves vs crowd control.

When it comes to wizards, there is generally a huge gap between the character's INT score and the player's. What do you do to bridge the gap?

Our group currently uses the DM as the wizard's extra brainpower. If the players have the necessary information to solve a problem, but can't piece it together, the player with high INT can get a nudge from the DM. (currently not really necessary, since the guy with the INT is currently the co-dm and is allowed to metagame slightly instead)

I've seen other DMs rule that the excess mental capacity is reserved for the increased spells, making a wizard only as smart as his skill points.

Min/Max 3.x / Walter C. Dornez, the "Butler"
« on: March 08, 2014, 01:29:41 PM »
This character was inspired by the recent thread on TWF with reach weapons. Walter is a butler who uses razor wire as a reach weapon, sundering, disarming, and dismembering his foes.

Required feats for Wire use:

• Abberation Blood (Prerequisite for Inhuman Reach)
• Inhuman Reach (+5ft reach)
• Willing Deformity (Prerequisite for WD Tall)
• Willing Deformity: Tall (+5ft reach)
• Extended Reach
• Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Spinning Sword (Slashing reach weapon that works on adjacent targets, refluffed as wires)

Relevant Houserules: We use Antifeats and pathfinder feat progression (Combined, they grant a feat every level), Flaws, Pathfinder skills, and Pathfinder's Class Skill bonus are considered ranks for prerequisites (to match up with 3.5 PrC requirements), Hellbred have the [Evil] subtype.

Ranger2(FE: Arcanist, Champion of the Wild)/Scout3/Stalker of Kharash2/Ranger+2 (Solitary Hunter)
This would have much more consistent damage with FE Evil+Arcanists and Skirmish applying to FEs that normally ignore precision damage, but it would have a harder time with the Knowledge Devotion/Random Butler Stuff.

Super Cheese Option: Add Martial Monk 2 for Greater Two-Weapon Defense and Perfect TWF, Drop all but one Ranger level.

Gear:
• 2x Fiendish Arm graft (5k*2=10k)
• 2x Spinning Sword (50*2=100)

Changelog:

Added Fiendish Arm grafts and Extended reach. Liberal interpretation of the order they are all applied should let them stack up nicely.
(click to show/hide)

Current Reach as medium size: 50ft.

Ideas:
Iron Guard's Glare into Thicket of Blades shenanigans?
Improved Disarm?
Aptitude Weapon+(Shadow Blade, Eagle's Fury, etc)?

Off Topic Fun / Stuck between Social Security and an Attorney
« on: March 07, 2014, 05:17:34 PM »
Social Security rejected my SSI claim.

I try to contact an attorney, but they won't help me unless I have an active claim (which starts a very short clock)

I start a new claim, then contact the attorney. They want a statement of disability (from a Qualified Medical Examiner)

My medical group (Kaiser) refuses to write said statements, and tells me I need to contact a third party and pay out of pocket...with the money I don't have, since I'm applying for SSI.

Min/Max 3.x / How to annoy a dragon for 1d100 years.
« on: January 09, 2014, 03:17:12 AM »
Gemcraft from magic of faerun allows spells to be imbued in gems with conditions, similar to contingencies.

The plan is to get a few hundred gems of Buzzing Bee, all set to different times. Days, weeks, years. Every time the dragon thinks its over...BZZZZZZZZZZZ

Inspired by our good friends over at the SCP Foundation and a theoretical conversation about what would happen if words could be gem contingencies (use the entire draconic lexicon, the majority go off early, but the rest stick around at increasing rarity, making the dragon wince every time he talks)

Min/Max 3.x / Skinwalker Effigy Master
« on: November 25, 2013, 07:39:04 PM »
Cloistered Cleric 1/Artificer 6/Effigy Master 5/Legacy Champion 6

• Which Bloodline would you suggest?

The plan is to make a hellwasp swarm effigy, give it intelligence, magic jar it, then inhabit a host body. This gives me THREE layers of protection, first requiring them to kill the host, then requiring them to kill the swarm, THEN requiring them to kill me. Contrary to my previous research, I noticed that while a hellwasp Effigy DOES consume living targets, it does NOT consume corpses. As long as I have an item of Gentle Repose available and a decent disguise check, I can pass as a normal creature, or at the worst a necropolitan.

Quote
If a hellwasp swarm inhabits a dead body, it can restore animation to the creature and control its movements, effectively transforming it into a zombie of the appropriate size for as long as the swarm remains inside. If a hellwasp swarm inhabits a living victim, it can neutralize the effects of its own poison and control the victim’s movement and actions as if using dominate monster on the victim. The hellwasps quickly consume a living victim, dealing 2d4 points of Constitution damage per hour they inhabit a body. A body reduced to Constitution 0 is dead.

Does a hellwasp swarm have line of effect outside the body while in a host? If so, I can still use infusions. If not, then neither do my foes, and I'm almost invulnerable.

Gear is going to be focused on augmenting the creature I inhabit. Having a disposable host means I can focus my wealth on gear or other effigies without concern for my own wellbeing, carrying over the gear from host to host, improving on both the base creature and gear fronts at the same time.

• Is Commodore Guff's Perma-Jar trick legal?
Quote from: PermaJar
Jar into something.
Cast Jar again, into something else.
Drag the first body out of range of the original spell.
Break the gem. The language of the spell has no provision for this.
The first spell is over, but you are still in the second body.
Revert to the first body.
It's yours forever.

If not, I'll just have to make an item of jar at a sufficient caster level, or possibly a Fang of Inhabitation. Ideally, I'd love to figure out a better way to do it.

• Legacy Champion for an extra 5 HD on my effigies, or Techsmith for a free extra golem and a bigass craft bonus?

Game Design / Rulebooks as living documents (AKA The Case for E-Books)
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:39:52 PM »
I have been thinking more lately on the state of my hardcover books, errata, and the meaning of "official" due to the recent conversation in fun finds 5. The line is drawn at every gaming table to allow or prohibit different tiers of books, from the Core Only DMs to the Everything Goes MinMaxapalooza, and I came to a few observations of my own.

Drawing the line is entirely ok. Things aren't balanced as well as they could be. Broken shit happens. I don't trust WoTC with their own product.
Errata is given a bad reputation because it is a change to the book they sold us, the book that we as consumers to be a complete and competently made product. The problem is that the team making the game is much smaller than the group breaking it. Errata WILL happen. The real problem here is that the delivery method is flawed to the point of feeling illegitimate. When they put out a PDF of errata, I either need to keep them with my hardcover, memorize them, or physically alter my hardcover book to include them. None of these are any better than if I had just houseruled them in the first place.

These led me to the same conclusion. The decision to allow or disallow books is one for each group to make, but the balance of a book shouldn't be the issue. Errata should be freely available, implemented painlessly, and supported with real data. This is why my tabletop games will no longer be hardcovers, and I will not be supporting games that do not implement their books with E-Book friendly formatting and E-Book based Errata. I know people love the feel of a hardcover at the table, but it's holding the genre back by being a static ruleset that can't be fixed when broken. If Hardcovers had removable pages (like a binder) then it would be fine, since errata'd pages could be traded out at will (barring formatting and pagesize issues). This is what E-Books excel at though.

I understand the fears of the companies that don't want digital formats and want to sell a physical product. I understand the desires for the physical book. I understand the tradition. What I don't understand is it being treated as the proverbial golden calf. It's broken. We have the technology to fix it. Digital sales are not going to destroy your industry, and you have the capacity to sell a superior product because of them.
