Everyone ready to move out Jax let's them know he will be ranging ahead 75-150 yards depending upon the terrain.  As he sets off it is with a long stride and a quick step that eats up the ground.  After moments he seems to disappear amongst the terrain.

Half walking and half swaggering, Brone makes up the rear in his heavy cloak. There was enough in the front; a rearguard seemed ridiculous, but he'd rather not have the travelling group snuck upon. One too many dealings with bandits.

I thought we was closer to the moathouse.  This mist is two thick so I move back to the party.  The plan is to keep them within the 30 foot Senses Aura.

The Ibis that Mialgru likes to turn into appears in front of the group, lands on a branch and says:
There's a corrupted wolf up ahead from you, about 700 meters or so. Pointing in the direction with a wing. It has huge jaws and is smaller than a dire wolf. I suggest you getting your weapons ready and we could sneak up on it, it probably smells as well as other wolves, so we should go around it so we'll face the wind when sneaking up on it, then decide whether we want to fight it or not.

"A large wolf in overgrowth that is known to spread some horrible disease? I'd say we just avoid it. We don't need it dead, it wont have any gold or treasures anyway, and there's no reward for killing it yet. Mialgru, could you keep an eye on it, give us a warning if it seems to be approaching? I'd rather not have to kill it, but if we must, it would be good not to be taken by surprise on it's own familiar soil...."

Beorn nods I agree.  Fighting makes noise anyway and if there's somebody in the moathouse I'd rather not have them know we're here yet, so let's avoid it if we can.
Title: Re: Chapter Two: Adventures Beyond Crydee

Bobbynock simply nods. "I agree as well, no need to fight the wolf if it can be avoided. I'd rather not catch a nasty disease any way."

Jax listens to the warning and then to the others.  "We were contracted to deal with such threats I believe in our ranging of the region.  Mialgru, at what range from the Moathouse to you guess we'd encounter the beast on our present course?  If the distance is sufficient the terrain is likely to deal with any noise concerns."

Title: Re: Chapter Two: Adventures Beyond Crydee
Post by: DrHorrible on November 14, 2011, 08:53:33 AM
Mizar listens carefully as his brother shares the lay of the land with the party, then after the others have spoken he says his opinion:

"I'd like to avoid it too if possible, but Jax may be right. In case we decide to fight it, we should face it with a good tactic in mind. We need to use our advantage to try to dispose of it without letting him harm us. That way we'll be sure he won't give us some disease."

"I'm less worried about disease than death. Death is not a merciful god. If we can get a high ground or surround on it, pelt it with arrows first, and kill it before it can call out, that would be best. I don't know of any wolves that hunt alone, but if you heroes are all hell-bound to do this, let's get it done smart. I'd rather have you all alive at the moathouse.

"Is there high ground to abuse?"

Well if I can anger it, you guys could climb into some trees, or hide under the ground as I lure it back towards you and then fly up. I'm fairly certain it wont be able to catch me while I'm flying but whether it would give chase I'm uncertain of.

I think going around it would be the soundest solution, that would also prevent anyone watching the direct route to the moathouse from seeing us, I can fly ahead and scout out a path were the beast will not smell us unless we close in on it, as it is 700 yards ahead, going 100 yards around it will only be a slight detour.

Title: Re: Chapter Two: Adventures Beyond Crydee
Post by: LordBlades on November 22, 2011, 01:47:14 AM
I was not suggesting avoiding it altogether, given the amount of trouble corrupted animals have given this region. However, assuming it's not smarter than the average wolf it's unlikely to come running to the sounds of a fight, which it's less than I'd dare to say about eventual smarter occupants of the moathouse. I stand by my initial assessment: drawing it to a safe distance or avoiding it until we've scouted the inside of the keep seem the wisest courses of action.
Title: Re: Chapter Two: Adventures Beyond Crydee
Post by: Mixster on November 22, 2011, 05:51:02 AM
I don't know of any surefire way to draw it closer. If it is as smart as a normal wolf, which I reckon it is, it wouldn't go chasing after me in bird form.

"Very well then.  If there is no objections.   Mialgru, If you will scout and guide us around it from above I'll follow your lead taking us around this beast for now.  As mentioned time may be of the essence in getting to the moathouse," he says remembering the mercs from the Inn.

With the thick fog and dense undergrowth the sound of your movement does not travel far.  You skirt around the wolf with relative ease given your need to cut through some of the more dense undergrowth as you work your way to the moathouse.  The air feels heavy, as you break through the last of the taller undergrowth into a clearing leading up to the moathouse.  It has clearly been sacked, with the upper floors looking to have been completely destroyed, and the gated entrance torn from its hinges.  The moat is still surrounding it though, and given some heavy repairs the small keep could once again serve as an excellent staging point for invasion.

Tork is going go look very closely at the front to see if there is any guards that is hidden or hidden spys ready to jump out at us when we get to the front of the moathouse. This looks like a good place for a ambush be ready.

If I do not see anything as the group moves up, Tork is going to be ready for a fight since this looks like a perfict place for a ambush.  Shadows start moving up around Tork then he just disappears from sight as the party walks closer to the moathouse.

He gets in his Child of Shadows Stance then hide from plain sight.

Kalal shakes his head and says "So we're worried about being attacked by frogs now? Do frogs even have teeth? What are they going to do, bleed on us?

Save your spells. I'll go over and spear them on the end of my pike, then we can have froglegs for dinner, if you want." He says brashly, and begins walking towards the moat.

Ok, frontal assault it is, not wise but your armor looks thick that will work in our favor.  Kalal, if you rapped up pull the frog out of the water so we can attack it better.  Tork takes up a flanking position of the group as they move you and again the shadows started to rap around Him then he just vanishes from sight.

If it looks like a frog, that doesn't necessarily make it a frog. Beorn points out to Kalal. I'd have gone for the more tactical approach, but we've faced a lot worse and it might be wiser to save our spellcasting resources for later. Just be careful.

Yes, Tork will strike the frog that came out of the water.

1st: Tork uses his free action to change his Aura to a Vigor Aura.  If you drop below 1/2 your total hp you get fast healing to heal to 1/2 your total hp.  It is not regeneration but fast healing that only heals when you do nothing that round that is how I think it works.

2nd: Tork moves up to attack the frog that is out of the water.

3rd: Shadow Blade Technique (Shadow) to strike the frog.

Tork moves up bravely to stand next to an enormous frog that completely towers over him.  The frogs tongue is wrapped around Kalal, but even with that detriment in manages to nimbly sidestep the attacks from Tork.

Seeing another target the smaller frog at the back moves up and lashes out with its tongue.

Vilenatas,

Did he hit me even with 20% chance to miss while I'm in my Child of Shadows Stance?  I know its a small chance but I will take anything I can get. :)

Since I have a small weapon, can I try to cut the tongue?

Brone, cursing himself for reacting to the action so late, moves up quickly with his short bow. He pauses only for a moment, taking a couple of seconds to aim and fire the bow at the land-bound frog. A smile crosses his face as the arrow whistles through the air, and his hand darts back to the quiver on his hip.

Jax's Actions contingent on being viable after Bobbyknockle takes his turn.

"The Dark Ones favor me this day", Jax says as he considers the tongue lashing he was lucky to avoid.  Then swiveling around he sees a spot on the other side of Kalal, who has just broke a frogs grip.  As he moves swiftly by the dwarf of stone, "I think it best if I keep you between me and this banquet of frog legs."  The large frog he had shot previously being in melee with Mialgru and Tork, Jax switches and fires at the large frog to Kalal's left.

Bobbyknockle's bolt flies true striking the larger frog that just attempted to wrap up Jax.

The larger frog that just lost its tongue goes wild biting at Tork even though he is already wrapped up in a grapple.  His teeth rip right through the tongue of his smaller brethren engulfing the smaller Tork.

(click to show/hide)

The frog that was previously grappling Tork moves up and bites his cousin that just attacked him, but is unable to get his teeth latched on and misses.

Jax, quickly moves outside of the range of the large frog that attempted to snatch him up with his tongue, and somehow the frog nimbly dodges the attack from the swiftly moving hunter.

Mizar seeing an opportunity to do some real damage steps up to the frog that Kalal just escaped from and breathes.

The smaller frog that previously attacked Mizar and missed spots Jax as he runs by and lashes out with his tongue in an attempt to lasso in other prey.

Still feeling the pain of the frog's blow in his bones, Beorn lowers his crossbow and then proceeds to carefully arrange his clothes, brushing off dust and blood with the back of his hand. Satisfied with the result, he turns a serious face to his companions I don't want to be pointing out the obvious , but I told you so. If we keep underestimating our enemies and rushing blindly into danger we know next to nothing about, not many of us will be coming back alive. Next time we might not be so lucky.

"The one who still has a heartbeat at the end wins..." Brone makes his crossbow disappear underneath his cloak. "I agree; the noble, forward approach isn't a terribly bright one. Terribly un-mercenary of us, too...." He brushes himself off, dispensing of the dust he'd kicked up onto his clothing. Noting his lack of wounds, he satisfactorily smiles, waiting for the others to catch their breath.

Still wary Jax realizes how close he came to being frog food.  Not wanting to repeat such exposure the approaches his companions with a plan for the moathouse.

"I think I want to scout the moat house a bit before we all go.   Mialgru, you willing to scout from the air while I take the ground?"

Sure, Jax was it? Mialgru says as his large form collides on itself and he turns into the Ibis again. As I said before there are some positions up there that I can't see, so we might already have been spotted.

Oh, and I agree that underestimating these frogs were probably a bad idea.
Mialgru will take to the skies and fly up to explore again, waiting for Jax to cross the stream as he watches from above.

The spider's web seems more difficult than you imagined to escape from, and you feel yourself being dragged down as you tumble rather well considering the webbing that is marring your movement from the room.  The spider follows, jaws out and hungry.  As it emerges from the doorway in pursuit that its hideous carapace is thickened and covered in sores and that the ichor dripping from its fangs is a vile green.

It closes to within biting distance and attacks with those ichor covered fangs.

The entrapped Brone is unable to get free and only manages to struggle around near the spider.  His allies come rushing to his aid as an arrow flies in to strike, causing a distraction but little else as it is unable to pierce the thickened skin of the spider.

The bolt from Beorn strikes true, but the spider seemingly shrugs it off and makes.

Mialgru makes a tactical move to slide into a better position to attack the spider, but even with this advantage is unable to slice through the thick, mottled skin.

The spider rears back to attack the entangled Brone.  A disturbing crunch is heard as the huge mandibles find their way onto its prey.

Well projectiles don't seem to be too effective so let's try something a little different, he thought.

A few motions of his hand were made and some words are spoken before his palm is thrust forward. A coruscating ray fires from his palm towards the spider, with the intent of weakening it.

Tork is still hidden and moves to E7 and strikes the spider from behind. Tork moved so he can not hide again but he is still in "Child of Shadows Stance" (20% to miss me).

When moving he used his "Wind Stride" manuver to get a +10 to movement for this round and moving at 1/2 speed to keep from getting a penilty to my hide roll.  I am striking while I'm hidden so I believe the spider does not get his dex to his AC plus Tork moved to a spot that gives me flanking on it "+2 to hit".

Brone gives a deep inhale of shock as the teeth sink into him, and it seems as though his whole effort were focused on not immediately fainting. As is, he seems to crumple, before rolling once more, and in a spin, rises slashing at the web with his rapier and offhand both. Raising his guard again, his stance barely changes as he hops backwards a clean 10 ft with skill - seemingly a reverse lunge. As the obnoxious restraints fall, he looks positively murderous, with the only slight attention paid to the massive holes in his abdomen.

With his companions striking and dancing about the foul spider it was hard to get a clear shot.  Then Kalal's strike provided just enough opening to get a fairly clear shot.  Moving quickly to angle on the opening Jax moves 10ft and looses his arrow.  Jax curses as his shot misses the gap and ends up glancing off the spiders carapace ineffectively.

Since his companions have shuffled about since his last turn, Mialgru moved to B8 and stabbed the spider instead.

Seeing that bolts and arrows did little more than scratch the carapace of the spider, Beorn lowers his crossbow and takes a few seconds to assess the tactical situation. Seeing Bobbynock reaching the same conclusion, he raises his hand and starts speaking in Draconic.

Brone slips free from the spider and steps away from its range, he feels poison coursing through him, but manages to shake off most of the effects of the virulent fluid that the greater spider injected.  An arrow from Jax forces it back as it prepares to charge after Brone again, and then the intonations of Beorn bring magic down upon the creature, but its mindlessness leave it unaffected by the magic.

While this is happening Mialgru slips into another position and brings his great polearm down upon the spider, it cracks against the carapace but is unable to pierce through.

The spider mindless pursues Brone opening itself to several attacks of opportunity.

Kalal, Mialgru, Tork and Mizar if you are still around.

Seeing his allies pelt it while it chases him, Brone gives a smile, and laughs as he dances out of harm. Despite the blood loss, or perhaps because of it, he seems to be enjoying taunting it while withdrawing from it.

Jax, walking quietly towards Brone and the fallen vermin. "That thing was monstrous but you made good bait Brone", the hint of a smile tugging at the edges of his lips.

Tork will keep his Draconic Vigor Aura up until everybody is up to 1/2 max hit points then switch it back to the Sences Aura to help with everybodys listen, spot and initiative roll (+1).

I will look at the body of th spider is the spider undead mutation or just mutated then search around to see if I can see any shiny stuff that the spider may have gathered or from a kill that it made.

Such wounds are very hard to heal, apparently, assuming this spider was one of those corrupted animals we've heard about, which unfortunately I think it was.

Brone pulls back his thick mess of hair, seeming to part the bangs. It's when a seemingly solid bit of smooth, jet black hair doesn't part with the rest that you realize he has horns! Two horns seem to sprout from the hairline, curving back and up, like short, backwards S's.  "I'm not so unused to vile things. But hopefully we can solve this issue of the taint! Well done on the research, then."

Seeing Brone's horns surprises Jax a bit as he had taken him for another human of these lands, if a flamboyant one.  He takes note as he tries with most things but does not press the issue as it seems Brone had taken measures to hide that aspect of his heritage.

The flind gnolls hair retreats as he turns into the old man Mikkel again.

Full of suprises are we? Well, Well, when you live my life you find that the world is never what it seems.
He goes over to Brone and looks to Beorn with an academical look.
I should probably look at it as well.

Both Beorn and Mialgru recognize the wound for what it is, the taint evident in the fact that the wound has already begun to fester.

Tork takes a look at the wounds.

With Mikkel (high nature check and healing check) and Torks healing check can we see if "the wound has already begun to fester" is from a disease?  Do we know how to get it removed?  Is there a church in town or a potion shop that we can a "Remove Disease" magic?  With our nature and healing checks can we determine what the next stage of disease will do?  We might just have to move on and take care of it later when we get back to town.
Heal check:
Rolled 1d20+2 : 3 + 2, total 5
OOC: Tork can not heal diseased conditions until 6th lvl "Touch of Vitality" pg 14, PH2

Brone cheerily asserts, "You two look as though it's for the worst. I am a mercenary, you can tell me if it's something vile. Though I didn't anticipate this would be the love bite that I got an infection from." He smirks.

Unfortunately it is. Beorn shooks his head We probably won't be able to heal it until we reach a temple of some sort.

Standing a short distance away and listening while keeping watch Jax looks over his shoulder to Brone and his healers, "What is going on with the wound?  Does the taint look bad enough that we need to take his limb?"
Title: Re: Chapter Two: Adventures Beyond Crydee

After a long look at the wounds you determine that it is not from a disease, and will not spread, but that even with the best of efforts the wound will never fully heal without the aid of a place of true goodness.
