Lava sharks and monkey pirates
« on: May 17, 2017, 05:25:37 PM »
My brother is running a realms campaign (Im not participating but he asks me for advice alot for some reason inspite of my inability to offer serious answers). Recently he told me that he would include my idea for an encounter with vanarra ninja pirates and their pet lava paraelemental half-iron golem sharks in the middle of a magma chamber, provided I designed the encounter for him. Who has some funny ideas for enemy designs (grafts in place of peg-legs/hook hans on some pirates maybe or something). Anything goes as long as its campy and absurd and can be loosely justified for an 11th level party.

the Anthropo-morphic Somethings fit, like anthro-Squid or anthro-Sperm Whale.

Stick one or two cheap templates on them to mess 'em up further.

Conch shell armor = hide armor?
Pirate of the Caribbean has lots of material.

I'd presume Bhu does too.

Where can I find the templates for that?

Make them flying monkey pirates with Winged. (Savage Species)

How about using Savage Species' Multiheaded Creature template on those lava sharks? There's even a Pyro version :p

Pirates are often associated with rum and drinking.  There's a PRC called "drunken master" that the more drunk you are, the better you fight.

How about a beholder with an eyepatch or 3?

One pirate could keep confusing the sharks for dolphins.  "Look at the FIN! It's a DOLPHIN!"

Cleric of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.  Since the FSM religion teaches that it's the lack of pirates that causes global warming, you could have the temperature go up 10 degrees every time the party kills a pirate.

Can't have pirates without ninjas.

The galley could have all kinds of pies ready for the "pie rate"ing contest.

Magma para-elemental sharks, and also pirates.

This makes me imagine the synergy of shark-surfing lava-pirates.

Clearly, these pirates have magical shark-rider bridle & boots that allow them to stand and steer the sharks with one hand, and avoid the negative effects of heat & poison gas.

"Yarrr! Swim me closer! Aye wants to hit the land-lubbers with me cutlass!"

Since the sharks are elemental denizens of both fire and earth, they can clearly surf over regular land (not just liquid magma), and thereby assault caravans. One of the caravans they assaulted was bound for the Monastery of Four Winds, and now the Four Sky Ninja Masters are hiring adventurers to investigate.

This would be a neat setup for the Temple of Para-Elemental Evil.

A wealth of excellent ideas here. To update Ive been asked to turn this into a full adventure, and to raise the level to 14+.

Because the campaign story has centered heavily around the dragon cult the pirate captain will be an alt-formed red dragon with dread pirate levels, famed for his unique senses which lead him to all the best booty, drawing talented pirates from around the region to join his crew. The crew will include a variety of intetesting members in addition to the monkeys, possibly including beholders and definitely including an illithid helmsman who issues mental commands to the colossal dragon turtle on whos back the ship is built. The turtlrs name will be Aaaaaarggalon.

Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirls

Cause nothing, almost nothing tops the campy and absurdity of that.

And don't forget the Dread Pirate Roberta....
