Mettle Index

Because we need it not buried in another handbook and my quick search for "mettle" in the handbook section revealed all entries were indeed buried in another guide.

Discussion thread here.

Ways to gain Mettle through standard classes or through standard class ACFs:

Hexblade (Complete Warrior page 5) 3rd level
Sohei (Oriental Adventures page 27, updated to 3.5 in Dragon 318, page 34) 9th level
Crusader (Tome of Battle: Book of 9 Swords page 8) 13th level

Goliath Rogue substitution level (Races of Stone page 152): 2nd level, Mettle on Fort save only, replaces Evasion.

Ways to gain (or effectively gain) Mettle through PrC's:

Kinslayer (Drow of the Underdark page 87) 1st level (requires Drow and Evil due to Vile feats)
Pious Templar (Complete Divine page 50) 1st level
Witch Slayer (Tome of Magic page 67) 2nd level
Hellreaver (Fiendish Codex 2 page 93) 4th level
Denieth Warden (Eberron: Dragonmarked page 105) 5th level (requires Least Dragonmark of Sentinel)
Argent Fist (Faiths of Eberron page 70) 8th level
Vigilante (Complete Adventurer page 85) 9th level

Iron Mind (Races of Stone page 114) 5th level, Mettle on Will save only

Master Specialist (Complete Mage page 70) 7th level, only if specializing in Abjuration, only after casting an Abjuration spell, and it only works against actual spells (not EX, SU, or SLAs).  Effectively Mettle (and Evasion), but isn't named as such.

Epic level classes with Mettle:

Void Incarnate (Online)
Mettle of Fortitude 4th
Mettle of Will 6th
Improved Mettle of Fortitude 8th
Improved Mettle of Will 10th

Ways to gain Mettle through items:

Tabard of Valor (Complete Champion page 142) Item, 16,000 Grants Mettle when at or lower than half hit points, or Improved Mettle if the character already has mettle from a class.  This is the only way to gain Improved Mettle except through Void Incarnate.  Might not work with Master Specialist's ability since that's not actually called Mettle.

Ring of Mettle: While not an item that has actually been published, some DMs do allow this redone version of the Ring of Evasion (DMG 232 or SRD).  Since it affects two saves though, expect it to be 50,000g instead of 25,000g like the Ring of Evasion is.  Your DM might also decide to split it into single saves, thus making a Ring of Mettle of Fortitude for 25k and a Ring of Mettle of Will for 25k.  Work with your DM to see what’s allowed (and don’t try to pass it off as anything but homebrew that happens to be based on an actual item).

Pathfinder:

While not actually called "Mettle," these abilities are essentially the same thing as D&D 3.5 Mettle.

Gun Tank (Gunslinger Archetype), Fort Only, level 15 (at least 1 grit point, doesn't consume them)
Inquisitor, level 11 (medium or lighter armor, not helpless)
Aegis' Astral Suit Stalwart, Level 2 (one point cost, doesn't function in null-psi areas)
Warder Stalwart, level 12 (not helpless)
