FAMOUS KAIJUAkamataa Half woman/half snake sometimes said to be a disguised deity or spirit.
Akaname Red goblin resembling a cross between a frog and a child with a horribly long tongue it uses to lick the filth from unclean bathrooms. It's salive is poisonous.
Akateko Red, disembodied hand of a child that dangles from a tree in Aomori prefecture.
Amikiri Weird spirit obsessed with cutting nets. Appears as a red snake with a segmented exoskeleton, beaked face, and pincers.
Azukiarai Bean grinding old man or woman who flees at the approach of humans.
Backbeard Also called Blackbeard or Bakkubeado. It appears as a mass of black tree roots with a single hypnotic eye and spreads fear.
Baku Weird creature with an elephants trunk and tusks, rhino's tail, ox eyes, and tiger paws (but which now resembls a tapir). Said to devour dreams and/or nightmares. Also said to devour the souls of the diseased. Sometimes associated with the Gods, and blankets made from it's pelt protect against illness and evil spirits.
Bisha-ga-tsuku Bloblike being with one eye, multiple feelers, and a body temperature of -150 degrees celsius who hides behind condensation and fog. It reproduces by stealing human souls.
Daichiuchi Bird face man carrying a mallet.
Gogya Naki One legged goggle eyed monster that scares children and causes earthquakes.
Hajikkaki Neckless, hairless round white monster with stubby limbs and only eyes, mouth and nostrils for a face.
Hakutaku Man faced bull with three eyes on it's face and each flank, and 6 horns. Also depicted as an 8 eyed lion with multiple horns, and is thought to be holy. Incredibly knowledgeable about monsters, and foretells the coming of plagues. Charms made of it's image are used to ward off illness. A similar being is the Takujui who is a human headed lion with spines on his back and eyes on his flanks that only appears during wise governments.
Harionago Beautiful young woman in Ehime prefecture who uses her animated barbed hair to ensnare and kill men.
Hiderigami Hairy yokai with eyes on top of it's head standing 60-90 cm tall. Is associated with drought, and ries up all water in it's presence. Also known as Bakki, it flees if submerged in dirty water.
Hitome A giant floating disembodied eye.
Hitotsume-kozo Yokai resembling bald one eyed priest the size of a 10 year old boy. Considered a bad omen they can also sometimes bring luck.
Hyosube Hairy bad-smelling goblin related to the Kappa who causes trouble and occasionally murders someone.
Ippon-datara Hairy mountain creature with one eye and one leg. In some stories he is the ghost of a blacksmith.
Issa One legged monster with a tail like an ear of corn carrying an umbrella. It lives on Tokunashima and drowns anyone not wearing an ear of corn. If you have corn and invite it onto a fishing boat you will have a good catch.
Jinmenken Human faced dog said to outrun cars.
Kami-Kiri Monster with the body of a shrivelled man, pincers, and a birdlike head. Fond of cutting hair it sometimes attacks people to prevent them marrying yokai.
Kechi-Bi A flying, fire-spitting head.
Kekkai Foul lump of congealed blood and flesh that vaguely resembles a small child. It is formed from an afterbirth. It often tries to kill it's mother.
Kejoro Beuatiful woman whose face and body is obscured by her long hair. She seduces and murders young men.
Keukegen Disease spirit resembling a small hairy thing (often thought of as a small dog).
Kibagurui Nasty monster that can pull into itself leaving a floating disembodied mouth full of fangs behind.
Kurayami-Me Yokai with eyes on it's knees that could see at night but bumped it's head on trees in the day.
Kurobozu Horrible smelling blob that likes to lick the faces of sleeping women.
Kuro Kamakiri Vaguely humanoid yokai that looks like a cross between a man and a black bear that eats hair.
Maket-Sugo Carp with a dragons head.
Maruge Small balls of hair that lurk in boxes meant for saving money who nip anyone trying to remove cash.
Mikoshi-Nyudo Yokai with three eyes and a long neck that stares into victims faces while standing behind them. Also described as a cross eyed monk similar to Nobiagari.
Mi-no-kedachi Bald man whose body hair stands on end.
Mumashika Deer with a horses head, one horn, one eye, wearing monks robes. Sometimes it has two eyes that stand out like a snails.
Nadezatou Eyeless old man with claws and webbed feet.
Nihon-Ashi Armless monster with a swollen head.
Nobiagari Creature appearing in many forms, usually a shadow or priest. It sneaks up behind you and when you look it grows, and the higher you look the bigger it gets until you fall onto your back or it attacks your throat. Lowering your gaze causes it to shrink again. Also called the Miage-Nyudo.
Nozuchi Blind hairy caterpillar with a gaping maw that likes to eat rabbits.
Nue Tanuki with a tigers legs, monkeys face, and a snake for a tail. It brings illness, misfortune and nightmares. It can also become a flying black cloud.
Nurarihyon Old man wit ha gourd shaped head who leads the yokai. He goes into peoples houses and pretends to be the owner, and once a year leads Hyakki Yako, a parade of Yokai. It is said people who see it will die.
Nure Onago Soaked woman who appears at night in the rain near any body of water laughing. If you laugh with her she attacks. A similar being is the Issa Onna who appears on beaches, and is a snake from the waist down. Both are likely related to Nure-Onna.
Nurikabe Invisible monster appearing as an ambulatory wall that tries to prevent people from reaching their destination.
Nurunurubouzu Black slug that sounds like a baby crying.
Obariyon Blob with crude arms and legs that rides on peoples backs and increases it's weight. It needs magic to remove it, but if you then take it home it becomes gold coins.
Odode-Sama Humanoid creature with eyes like an owl that could read minds and tell the future.
Ogome Bird with human face that sounds like a baby crying. It is considered an ill omen.
Oigakari Amorphous black heavy thing that climbs the shoulders of people out at night.
Okubi Biant disembodied heads that are portents of major natural disasters.
Oo-Odafuku Huge chubby faces that walk around on two arms said to bring good luck.
Oyajirome Humanoid with one eye in the back of it's skull and a claw on it's one fingered hand.
Raiju Beast composed of lightning that also appears as a cat, tanuki, monkey, fox, weasel, hairy crab monster, one eyed cat beast with a long horn on its forehead, or wolf. It's voice sounds like thunder. It hates camels, likes to eat birds, and is normally calm except during thunderstorms. It sleeps in belly buttons and when it's owner the God Raiju want's it to wake up he fires an arrow, so don't sleep in storms with your navel exposed.
Sankai Sankai are any Yokai given birth to by human women (children can change in the womb), or the children of a yokai and a human being. One such is Oketsu, a turtle with hair on it's back that tries to escape by burrowing beneath the house so it can return later to kill the mother.
Sara-Hebi Snake with a woman's head.
Satori Mountain apes with long hair that can read minds. The ability makes them nigh invulnerable as they always know what you are going to do before you do, though for the most part they are harmless. Some stories say they are child gods fallen into ruin and thus are now merely yokai.
Senpoku-Kanpoku Human faced frog which guides the souls of the newly dead to the grave.
Shachihoko Carp with a tigers head. It causes rain.
Shokera Yokai appearing as a lizard like or goblinoid creature that peers into roofs looking for ways in.
Shunoban Samurai who changes his face into a red demon with a horn, spiny hair, and an impossibly wide fanged mouth. Victims usually pass out from fright. One story says it also takes your soul.
Tendokumushi Black slug with the character for heaven written on it's back that melts snow.
Tenjokudari aka Tenjosagari Hairy monster or female ghost that occasionally hangs from the ceiling and scares people.
Tenjoname Humanoid creature that licks the ceilings of houses with it's long tongues.
Tsurube-otoshi Shapeshifting monster that drops from trees during storms to frighten people.
Uma-Kame Horse headed turtle.
Ushiuchibo Small black creature that can't be seen clearly that invades cattle barns at night. Cows who see it can sicken and die, and they cut cattle and horses to get to their blood. It can only be killed via a village ritual.
Waira Hairy mountain beast with a doglike head and a single claw on each forelimb. Sometimes they are said to resemble cows or frogs bodily, and they eat moles. Some pictures depict it as a mix of dog, cow, and eagle.
Wauwau Shaggy headed yokai with a beard and black teeth.
Yama-biko Hairy 4 legged creature living in the mountains responsible for echoes.
Yama-otoko Hairy wild men of the mountains who kidnapped women for sex.
Yukinyudo One legged, one eyed priest who appears in the snow near dawn.
