lv4 - A new beginnings
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:05:44 PM »
The capital Britannia is a huge city built on a short but impossibly large hill. Some say it was originally a mountain and the 1st king struck it down to build his castle. Originally it's massive magecrafted walls only surrounded the castle and the small town around it. As people flocked to the capital a second ring was built up to protect the new inhabitants, then a third was built for much of the same reasons. Even now the place is overflowing and many people have built wooden buildings outside the third wall. The rings have become a class separation these days, the king in the first, the aristocrats in the second, commoners with deep pockets in the third, and those struggling to meet ends outside.

The entirety of the contents within the first ring was rebuilt some centuries ago. The castle sits in the exact center where the royal family resides through it is just as much of a home as it is a business hub. Surrounding the castle are the various teaching facilities and bunks for the students. Because of the skills and dedication in the town of Owlit you are here on personal invitation training to become a citizen of the kingdom.

Training is a two to four year program, starting at the most basic level where you learn to read and write. You learn history, arithmetics, and the basics of how the world works. Since all of you have had some type of formal education before hand you skipped the first two years. The last two has you shuffling around between buildings. Every student learns combat essentials and the basics of magecraft so they can learn to recognize and deal with spellcasters. You also attend classes based on your dedication and learn to use your unique powers (if any).

@PCs, you can choose one area of study.
(click to show/hide)

As noted, you are in the two year version of the program and have been attending school for the last six months. You've just entered the team building and practical experience part of things. So you've got a new set of class mates you bunk and learn with and a new set of teachers. Much of your current schooling will be done acting out different roles and scenarios while in your downtime you are allowed to leave school grounds and explore the city.

You have your own special dorm, a simple shack with a small commons room and twelve tiny one bed/dresser separate rooms. The six of you and five other classmates inhabit them. The Sand Dome and it's adjoined building sits close by. Beyond that forming a ring around the castle is the rest of the various teach facilities. On the other side you have a field used by the martial section as the training ground. To the otherside of that is the martial hall and lesser student's dorms and you loop around into the other teaching facilities. The centerhold is of course the castle which if of course well guarded, which in turn means the dormitories are watched by the night guards.

It's the start of a new semester and you guys are loading your gear into your new dorm rooms and a skinny brownhaired boy dressed in simple dark blue clothes no more than fourteen years old can be seen walking up with a young red headed girl dressed in an equally dyed red leather outfit that resembles armor as much as it does a dress. They are both carrying large duffel bags "You're such a tease" he shouts at her before storming into the common area. Another female dressed in simple plain clothes carrying a small backpack behind them has a beat red face but remains silent as they enter.

Heironymous shakes his head slightly at the antics of his classmates. His experiences working as a guardsman in his hometown have turned him from the once naive young boy who followed his father around like a puppy into a strong young man, but have also served to inflate his ego somewhat. He thinks to himself that those chosen for the honor of being a citizen should compose and behave themselves better than the young man and red-haired woman.

"Behave yourselves. You're no longer children. You've been honored with the chance of being citizens. Don't waste it on horseplay." he says.

Both the young boy and red dressed girl look at each other and laugh.

"I knew I should have betted money on it. You're almost as bad as Mato." the kid strolls over and offers his hand, "I'm Celahex." The red head keeps walking but checks you out offering saying "Hiess Yeodoi." as she goes to drop off her gear. The other female stands and waits polity for her turn as someone else enters carrying a military duffel bag. He catches what Celahex said and offers his own retort, "Some of us act our age, and not the size of... Hieronymus Faust of Owlet?" he leads into as he comes over to introduce him self. "I am Mato Del-Kito of Britannia, it is a great honor to have you here."

Galen watches all of this quietly from his bunk, having come into his own as well.  He has grown from the unsure shepherd into an adept outdoorsman and brawler with a fierce temper, but he is dedicated to the friends that he has made in getting here.  He shakes his head at Heironymous' predictable response, always trying to be the responsible one and an example to others.

He then hops off his bed and walks over to Heir with a grin on his face, clapping his hand on his friend's shoulder perhaps a little harder than strictly necessary.  "Come Heir, what fun is life without a little horseplay?  Think of it as training if that makes you feel  better."

As Heironymus is shaking Celahex's hand and nods his head in acknowledgement to Hiess, he replies to Mato "Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment, but do wonder how you've heard of me."

His only reply to Galen's admonishment is to glance at him and shrug slightly.

"Your deeds in Owlit reach even here my friend." Mato replies as he strolls over offering a gauntlet covered hand. Oddly, he appears to be wearing sectional plated armor under his clothes and carries a sword on his belt. As a general but unenforced rule no student walks around armored and armed unless they are headed to the training grounds, it's unwieldy for class room usage and attracts the wrong kind of attention from the guards. But on moving day he is prepared for all out battle.

Celahex interjects "Owlit? That sounds made up." to which the mostly quite girl answers him "It's a small fishing town said to have gotten it's name from a mountain climber that described the valley as a turquoise eye of an owl lit by the moon". Celahex just rolls his eyes even further as he turns his attention to Galen, "Please say you're not as nerdy as she is."

Galen laughs.  "I grew up there and still don't know much about the history of the town.  My focuses have been more towards what lies underground than on top of it when it comes to 'nerdiness'."

Heironymous shakes Mato's hand, and says as he glances towards Celehax "Obviously only to those who are more adept at listening rather than blathering on about nothing."

Then he smiles at the "nerdy" girl, and goes to unpack his things.

An orange humanoid wearing an alabaster colored robe walks in with a younger human-looking male carrying a bag. "Greeting, I'm Roconnel. Information, attend sand dome in twenty minutes for introductions." he says simply before leaving.

The kid stays behind and without a word heads to an empty room to unpack and so does the "nerdy" girl. Celahex on the other hand flops into one of the chairs in the main room, "Yep, I was unpacked the moment I threw my change of clothes on the bed." Mato grabs his gear and addresses everyone, "Being that we're meeting at the Sand Dome, I'd expect this introduction has less to do with traditional formalities than it is a quick team builder. You should prepare accordingly.". Then he heads into one of the bunks.

The Sand Dome received it's name quit well. The massive dome shaped building is made out of sand with a set of double doors leading inwards. As you walk into the place you can see a second floor ringing the 1st far above it and a giant mirror reflecting the main are of the 1st hangs overhead allowing you see see the creation Reconnel cooked up.

(click to show/hide)
Reconnal explains that the maze contains switches that operate different doors and they are set up to force everyone to split up. Only when all three relics are recovered and placed in all three doors near the center will it open. Lasuora adds to Reconnal's explanation stating the mirror will not reflect her illusions. The maze is populated and contains other surprises.

Reconnal then drops part of the wall alloing you to walk in...

Heironymus quickly commits the map to memory (take 10 on Autohypnosis), and then focuses a bit on the pouch of sand at his own side, attempting to create a map that is a mirror image of the one above (and so correct).

"With the map in front of us like that, we should head straight for the first switch and secure the area. We'll have to split in teams as we do this, so who should do what?" Mato observes.

Celahex replies to him, "Don't you think before we split up you should at least ask what we can do? I mean, some of us are pretty unique. I could totally just walk through those walls."

"I doubt Reconnel would allow such an easy method to be used in this practice." Ronuta adds. "who cares, lets just charge in, nothing could stand in my way! Hiess practically yells.

Heironymus replies to Mato "I'm best at playing bodyguard to my nearby allies, but I have a few other tricks like the sand, and my little pet rock." As he says this, a crystalline creature with spidery legs crawls up onto his shoulder and waves its legs towards each of those present as if saying "hello" or perhaps just "scenting" them.

To Celehex he says "It's worth a try, but Rotuna is likely right. I'm sure the instructors are likely aware of each of our capacities."

To Hiess he says "You're welcome to go first. I will go with you if you'll give me just a moment. We do need to remember that there are doors which are supposed to close behind us, though."

"Hell yeah!" Hiess says as she slams her fists together. Two golden bracelets, almost bracers, appear around her arms and charges into the entrance (the pentagram) and around the corner to the left. You hear a shout and the ping of metal and something falling over but as noted, the mirror doesn't reveal living creatures.

Galen snorts.  He has no interest in telling the others what he can do, he'll probably have to compete with them later anyway.
