D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: [3.P] T1-2 builds without using T1-2 classes?
« on: November 05, 2012, 02:03:51 PM »
Bard/Ur Priest/Sublime Chord/Mystic Theurge comes to mind. Starts with a T3 class, ends up with 9th level divine and arcane spellcasting.

Are you treating magic item activation the same way you're treating spellcasting? If not a Blasterficer/meleeficer hybrid build might work well. Can even do your own "Shield other" spell to unify HP then too.

Side note:  I happen to think the Dvati are like totally utterly broken, as actions are among D&D's most valuable commodities.  I'm open to being convinced otherwise, as in I'm not deeply committed to that view, but that was my initial sense.
Can't really say that I agree. They're TERRIBLE spellcasters, since you lose all of those extra actions AND you have a LA (which I assume for the purposes of this post are being bought off) AND you have a split hit point pool. As melee combatants they're generally poor because of the hit point problem. I could see them working really well as a ranged build, but there's still a lot to overcome, especially if you want each half to fulfill a different role, as is the intent here.

I'm not saying it CAN'T be broken, I'm just saying it's harder to break than you'd think.

Edit: It might be fun to have  Dvati character with a Dvati cohort though, just so you could have a small party as your character :p

Is your DM going to extend the restrictions on spellcasting to manifestation as well?
I'm the DM. And yes.
PsyWar could still work. Skip the Soulbond Weapon ACF (since presumbably only one of the two would get the benefit anyhow), and split feats between two-hand power attacker and a power thrower. Use Vigor/share pain crystal combo to help with the hit point issue. What's the starting level for the pair?

Is your DM going to extend the restrictions on spellcasting to manifestation as well? Seems like it could be a fun class to do a PsyWar with. That would also help the VERY limited hitpoints you're going to have to deal with.

Edit: The Favored class of Bard can work too, if you can find a way around the hit point problem. A lot of melee bard's feats can easily help an archer (since they'd be Inspire Courage-based), and a lot of the stuff you would want is item-based (Inspire Courage boosts, Slippers of Battle Dancing, and Crystal Echoblade come to mind). You won't be able to cast spells as much, but Bard is less reliant on spells anyhow.

Swift Hunter build? Use the Ranger levels for the archery style feats, and two-hand for skirmish damage on the melee side?

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: What do you usually ban in your games?

Now my players and I have an agreement, anything they want to use I have available to me. So they avoid any true game breaking mechanics to prevent the BBEG from getting comparable game shattering power.
This is pretty much how I run things. Fortunately I run with a pretty close group of friends, and it's never really been an issue. "Whatever you get to use *I* get to use" is usually enough of a threat for me that it takes care of everything.

Apologies for the thread necromancy. I'd love to see some discussion of the Soulbond Weapon ACF vs. having a Deep Crystal bow for PsyWar builds. Deep Crystal looks like it could be an interesting way to deal extra damage, but so far as I can tell you can't have a Soulbond Deep Crystal bow because Soulbond says the weapon has to be of "normal" materials.

This is correct. A lenient DM would probably just have you pay the associated costs (1000gp) or the equivalent XP cost (200xp) to alter your weapon.

Here's the real question though: Can you "overcharge" a deep crystal weapon by RAW? RAI is an obvious no, as that would be insane.

The relevant section (taken from D20SRD.org):
Quote
As a free action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity, the wielder can channel psionic power into a melee weapon or ranged weapon made of deep crystal. For 2 power points, the deep crystal weapon deals an extra 2d6 points of damage. The weapon will stay charged for 1 minute or until it scores its next hit. Bows, crossbows, and slings bestow this power on their ammunition. All missile weapons lose this effect if they miss. However, they may be recovered and charged again.

RAW there's no real reason I can see that you wouldn't be able to, since it's a free action and it doesn't mention any kind of maximum charge capacity for the material. I think you're right that RAI it's supposed to be 2 points and that's it, but maybe it's abusable.

Would Deep Crystal + Psionic Shot + Greater Psionic Shot + Psionic Meditation + Hustle be a good way to go? Seems like that might be a way to stack up a ton of damage into one shot, maybe helping deal with DR.

Well, what about this one?  It's so unskilled it can't even attract a familiar.
Edit: Nevermind. Got to the bottom of the post there.

-Your favorite games
I'm a long time 3.5 player. I've recently moved into Pathfinder, and for the most part I've found it satisfying. In non D20 systems, I am part of a long (at this posting 9 year) on-and-off Supers game that is currently run in a highly modified house version of Silver Age Sentinels, which is itself based on the Tri-Stat DX system.

-Your non gaming hobbies
When I'm not being lazy, I write. I like to go shooting (as in firearms). I used to play tabeltop wargames, but haven't done so in quite some time. I also podcast at http://unqualifiednetworks.com

I sometimes lurk the Giant in the Playground forums. For a long time I was on the old Classic Battletech forums, but that went away with my lapse from tabletop wargaming.
