Introduce Yourself / So, uh, hi again.
« on: May 14, 2018, 02:33:38 AM »
So, uh. It me. After... *checks* 5 years.
... My life imploded, and then I had some serious anxiety about coming back when it felt like I had left so many things in a flux with how I disappeared.
But... Here I is, for those who remember me.

Legends of the Heroes / Metal Bard, help needed!
« on: July 05, 2013, 09:54:43 PM »
(I have no clue where else to put this, I need help with song selection.)
I am making a bard-like character for a game.
(Not D&D, but: he plays music, and things get easier for other people to do; he's a social master in a non-social game; he can work other, basic magics, but less than what the actual mage can do. Bard.)

I want him to be fluffed very heavily as a metal-head (or other very hard rock, I don't get too hung up on genre classifications). Yes, the game world is basically near to modern earth.

I don't know anywhere near enough metal, in part because I only like the stuff that is still melodic. Turisas and Manowar comes to mind.
Because so much of metal lacks melody, I don't listen to much, and that means I don't even know much of the stuff that still does have melody. Heck, Turisas I only know because of Questionable Content.

So, I need the help of others on these boards on finding good music for this guy to play.

[D&D 3.5] Olympian Avengers / Olympians of Conquest (O.o.C.)
« on: June 02, 2013, 07:21:38 PM »
Sorry, I work Sundays. You rapid posters you.

Important question: fractional BAB/saves or not?
Fractional. You only get the +2 from the first occurrence of it being a good save.

Finally: what the hell is the cost for silver armour? I need to know that to work out the cost of gold.

You would have to ask Osle.

As Osle said.

OK, so how should I deal with the bloodline XP? I need either a major or intermediate celestial bloodline... do I start below 13th level, do I take Item Familiar and quote "xp is a river" to balance it out, or something else?

I'll be starting the group at 1/2 of the way from 13th to 14th. Bloodlines, taking into account XP is a River already, would have you start: 3,500 behind for a intermediate bloodline; just barely at level 13 for Major.

Arias, how do you feel about Energy Bows?
I know of things similar in Egyption Myth, is there anything like that in Greek?

Also, Razorfeather Ammo?
Razorfeather Arrows are good to go. Buy them now, and when they're given to you in the opening scene, you'll find out where they come from.

To pre-empt a question: Raptor Arrows?
Relic Powers would still require the feat-tax. Either Artemis or Apollo would work.

How about the line of Pholus? I'm definitely more of a civilized Centaur, but presumably not immortal like Chiron.

Either that, or I can make up a demi divine origin for my character. That seems to be the standard with the wise teacher centaurs. I was actually considering Half Celestial for one of the two unaccounted for levels so that would fit with being the son of Silenus or something.

Either of those works for me.

EDIT, Been meaning to ask this: At 13 HD the Khan path for Centaur can share "magic buffs" with allies. Are beneficial formulae considered magic buffs? They would seem to qualify as the ability deliberately uses a general term rather than something more specific like "spells," but I wanted to confirm.

Ask Osle what he meant. Bardic Music, Spellshape, various Auras, and so forth might, or might not, count.

I appear to be doing the thing that is going to aim to not die. I am not entirely sure of the utility of this. :lmao
I'm collecting immunities like they're going out of fashion. :p

My saves are kinda nuts. Mettle & Evasion, plus I get to roll twice and keep the best.  And my pegasus gets special mount benefits, animal companion benefits, warbeast, and magebred.

EDIT: Just noticed that the light cavalry scout doesn't give the mounts bonus HD.  I'll be switching up that half to be Zen Fundamentalist 5/Knight Ranger of Furyondy 8, if that's ok with you, arias.
Links are always appreciated.

Splitting enhancement w/ Aim damage???

EDIT:
If splitting+aim is go, then this is my bow:
MW Greatbow = 450gp (not composite b/c my Str is 8)
Dwarvencraft = 600gp (refluff as appropriate)
Serrenwood = 4000gp (refluff as appropriate)
Seeking  = +1 bonus
Splitting = +3 bonus
(Total = 37,050gp)
+4 Dwarvencraft Serrenwood Seeking Splitting Greatbow

Serrenwood would be Elysian Pine  :eh

Aim only applies on one of the two.

[D&D 3.5] Olympian Avengers / Char Sheets

Houserules (Shameless theft of SirP):
The number of iterative attacks is determined as normal, but all extra iterative attacks are treated similarly to secondary natural attacks (max penalty of -5, and reduced by Multistrike and Improved Multistrike), though with full Strength bonus to damage as normal.

Skills
  • Use Rich Burlew's Diplomacy, spoilered below via OGL for convenience.
  • Cross-class skill ranks cost 1:1, with the normal caps.
(click to show/hide)

Feats
(click to show/hide)

Equipment
  • Spending gold for enhancement bonuses sucks. So, let's not.  Instead, you can enchant a masterwork weapon, armor, or shield directly with properties, instead of needing a +1 enhancement bonus first.  Each property grants an enhancement bonus to the item equal to the plus of the property.  For example, a keen flaming longsword functions as +3 (+2 from keen and +1 from flaming), and a ghost ward shield has a +1 enhancement bonus.  The maximum total bonus on equipment is still +10, meaning you can get up to a +10 enhancement bonus.

CharGen - Up for discussion, but I'm thinking:
13th level Gestalt. With XP to put you 1/2 of the way to Level 14.
36 PB for stats, but only one stat can be raised to 18 base (before counting race, levels, etc.)
WBL = 110,000 GP (Drachma). Most of the gear will be granted you at campaign start, rather than starting on your person. No more than 1/2 (55,000) on any one item.
2 Flaws, SRD is okay by default, anything else must be requested and okay'd.
2 Traits, SRD is okay by default, anything else must be requested and okay'd.
HP is Maxed per HD.

Everything from classes, races, gear, et alli, I am going to be much more likely to say "no" to here than anywhere else.

You will be outmatched. Work together or die. First one up is to be the Lion. I will not pull punches.

Spirit of Life

Associated skill: Heal
Discipline “weapons”: Chirurgeon’s Tools.

Spirit of Life is a Discipline unlike those that were taught at the Temple of Nine Swords. Spirit of Life is a discipline designed to keep others alive through treating their wounds.
In a long ago forgotten war, there was a group of Healers who were forced into combat, violating their vows and making them lose their healing magic. Unwilling to lay down the mantle of being a healer, and unwilling to take back up a version of the path that was so easily broken before, they decided to attempt a new method. Studying the workings of the body, they trained themselves and developed tools for their training. Thus was born a martial path that encouraged life to blossom in defiance of wounds: Spirit of Life.

Spirit of Life can be learned by either Crusaders or Swordsages, swapping out one of their disciplines for Spirit of life at 1st level of the class. Warblades are too focused on their path of study to learn this discipline.

Spirit of Life depends on working with the body of the target in order to heal effects, and thus its maneuvers do not normally work on Undead, Constructs, Elementals or Oozes.

Unlike other disciplines, Spirit of Life requires the use of Chirurgeon’s Tools for its maneuvers, unless the maneuver itself says otherwise. Attempting to use a maneuver that does not require a Heal check fails if you are not properly equipped. Using a maneuver that does require a check can be attempted, but you take a -10 penalty on the check. Using Chirurgeon’s Tools requires you have at least one hand free.

Spirit of Life Strikes all provoke Attacks of Opportunity, but taking damage does not interrupt the use of the maneuver. If an attack causes you to lose the ability to take actions or move, then the maneuver fails, but is still expended.

Gaming Advice / Homebrew Vows
« on: May 21, 2013, 01:47:15 PM »
I'm looking at / for good Homebrew fixes / reworks for the BoED Vow feats for a character idea I'm working on.

The Homebrew Compendium has a lot of instants of linking to various other index's, so that would take some combing through.

Other than these two, do any of you know of other options, especially ones that you like?

Other RPGs / [CWoD/oWoD]Stat & Dice caps?
« on: April 10, 2013, 12:37:57 PM »
Once upon a time I remember having found rules in an oWoD book about a dice pool capping at 20.
I have always assumed that attributes and abilities cap at 10 (the highest an Antediluvian Vampire can have those scores at).

I cannot find any rules for this anymore, however.
The closest I can find is in Vampire, that no kindred can blood buff a physical stat higher than 10.

Now, let me give an example of this, in-play.

Game: Werewolf. Character: Lupus; Get of Fenris; Ahroun; Legendary Strength Merit. Enemy: Nexus Crawler.

So here's what happens:
The Fenrir has 6 strength, enters Crinos (wolf-man) form, which gives +4 Strength. Strength = 10. Uses the Gift Strength of Thor, which doubles your Strength. This might be useless, if there is a cap @ 10, or it could give you Strength 20.
Lets say you have 20 strength from that, then use a claw attack. Claws deal Strength +2 damage.
This would mean that so long as you hit, you would have a die pool of 22+. Unless there is a cap on your die pool limiting that to 20.

So are there these caps? Where are they printed? Is there anywhere that any of this is even implied?

Is there any generic options that anyone can trade out for?
Specifically, Artificer and Factotums?

Min/Max 3.x / Better Crit Multiplier.
« on: March 16, 2013, 07:19:12 AM »
What it says on the tin, really.

I'm trying to get a better Critical Multiplier on a weapon.

Now then, certain points to address right off.
Point (A)
Whatever weapon used would start with a x4
Therefor, Kaorti, which wouldn't be allowed anyway, is not relevant.
Point (B)
No AEG, or most other third-party books. Dragon is okay, as is a lot of homebrew.
So no "Serrated", if that's what it was called.
Point (C)
Dragondoom only applies against dragons, and is too many feats to be worth it.
Master Throwers Deadeye Shot does not apply, due to the melee nature of things.
So neither of those work.

One thing I might use:
Maiming is random, but it does net a statistical .5 increase to multiplier.

Weapon properties, whether mundane or magical, are best.
Spells are great.
Feats are okay.
Levels are... tolerable.

[D&D 3.5] Arcana Lost / Opening Scene, a Fracas in Frakas
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:57:05 AM »
Frakas, it is a city that is nigh-unavoidable when traveling the eastern edge of the continent of Parus. A port city and capitol of the country of Frais.
You approach the city, walking from the west. You've been here before. But it doesn't seem quite normal. Even from a distance, you can smell the town. Someone's been letting the fish go bad, and a lot of it. The wooden buildings have a dinge to them, recently treated against the rain, most like. And it is raining, which says even more of the smell of rotten fish that it is so unabated, striking your nostrils with enough strength to make your stomach feel like it is filled with tapioca.

This leads you to the decision to not stay in the city proper for the day. Instead you walk up to a gate booth, where passes are sold for various forms of travel, and the scheduling for such things is known to the attendants. They are also used as very cheap sleeping spaces. There is only a single attendant at the counter, and there is a line of several people (16, if you count) waiting for service. There are many posters on the wall, to read. Some are advertisements for local performers, others are for help wanted with various tasks.

A little girl finishes putting up her own poster as well, then turns to see you, and others like you. Her eyes go well beyond just 'wide', but more from awe than fear. she then focuses on some canines that are with one traveler, grins wide, waves at the dogs, then runs off out of the gate booth, towards the city.

Looking over the posters, there are a few that are of note.

The Ruby Red, and the Zatara.
The local merchants guild is willing to pay a crew to scout the waters to report exact locations,
Or if they are even, in fact, nearby.
Possible bonus pay if the ships are led away, or scuttled.

Merchants Guild: Large Stone Building, at end of Docks. Near end of Port Street.
Well, if the trading ships cant get rid of the fish, that might explain the smell.

Gaming Advice / Will saves and 1's
« on: March 01, 2013, 04:46:46 PM »
Is there anything like Steadfast Determination for Will saves? Something that makes it so that a "1" is just a "1", not an auto-fail?

Okay, I know about using Pride Domain + Choose Destiny to make rolling a '1' a 1/160,000 chance, or how maneuvers can make the save into a skill check, but that's not the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

I do not, at this point, care about source. 3.0, 3.5, Path, 1st party, 3rd party, college party, whatever.

Off Topic Fun / So, can I get some help on the sources in this video
« on: February 07, 2013, 07:43:46 PM »
So here's my thing.
There's this video, cut with a lot of little clips from various sources, and I'm curious as to what it is all from. Even of the ones I recognize, the only ones I've actually seen are FFX-2, FullMetal and Chobits, which are each used only briefly anyway.
Here's the video: The Cool Offs - Satellite

Sources I can tell, in order:
One Piece (ep?)
FFX-2
??? (Anime #A,  I've seen ads for it that I recall, but IDK)
??? (Anime #B, seems familiar)
??? (Clip, I know I've seen these catgirls in another Youtube video, which I think is their source, and I know there's two videos for them)
Haruhi Suzumiya (ep?)
??? (Anime #C)
??? (Anime #D, again, seems familiar)
One Piece (ep?)
FullMetal Alchemist
??? (Anime #C)
??? (Clip)
Chobits
Haruhi Suzumiya (ep?)
One Piece (ep?)
Naruto
??? (Anime #E, actually, I'm pretty sure it's #A again)

Any help clearing up the Question Marks and Parenthesis would be appreciated.

Gaming Advice / Player with a re-rolling addiction
« on: January 30, 2013, 03:57:41 PM »
There is a player in a few of my IRL play-groups who has a habit that can really grate on me at times.
He gets bored with characters after a while, gets them killed, and brings in another character.

He seems to really like character creation, making 3-8 characters for any given game. But he goes through them pretty quick. I don't think I can recall a single character ever lasting 8 sessions. There was one time when in the course of 8 sessions he went through 3 characters. One was a legitimate death, to be fair.

Now, I've gotten bored with a character or two in my time. However, this is just ridiculous. But moreso, there are two, real, problems here.

The first problem is the obvious one, the parties 'revolving door'. Eventually, the party, in character, begins to regard each other as more permanent comrades, who seem to always have one 'red shirt' or another hanging out. So the party, in character and out, stops paying any attention to this players characters, because there's no point. "Oh, you serve the queen, and wish to become the first knight of her kingdom? Yeah... Don't care, you won't last long... no one who groups with us lives long." And this is to say nothing of the 'revolving door' meaning that any campaign-ties that that character had were gone, and the DM / GM / ST needs to come up with some reason for this character to be joining the party. This can get problematic, and encourages eventual laziness. Because, really, why bother giving this character any reasoning, any connections that the party might want or need, when he's going to be outa there faster than a crack-smoking temp worker?

But that, that I could deal with.

The second problem, however, is making me quite perturbed. See, I've retired characters before. I've had them achieve their goals, get called off somewhere, or some other, in-character reasoning worked out between me and the DM way in advance. This guy, not-so-much. See, he has to be a disruptive of an ass about it as he can, the in-character justification is usually flimsy at best, and sometimes he comes right out of the blue with it. He has had his clerics offer their words at important NPC funerals (one, the woman had been the lead cleric for her god in the whole world), just for his first act to be the destruction of holy symbols, because they were not from his god (his was Kord, and the symbols were of Eveninglory, from LM). More recently, he has had his Settite (Vampire) offer himself to a diablerist, then his replacement character eventually decided to start a fight with another party member (50-50 for which one would die), with no real justification (he managed to manouver a conversation to being hostile, then just let fly the violence, and the conversation wasn't even bad enough to think about frenzy).

He does this in every game, and every in system. He tends to be somewhat proud of his disruptive deaths (the most recent one, he was even bragging about it). So talking to him about that is pointless. I've tried talking to him about why he thinks he gets bored with the characters, and I have yet to have ever gotten any kind of actual answer to that. Honestly, it seems to me (just my opinion) that it is more because he makes so many different characters, that when he's playing one, he's looking over the others with rose-coloured glasses, in kind of a "'grass-is-always-greener', so I'll jump the fence" vicious cycle.

At the same time, except for this, he's a good player. And he's kind of the linchpin for the group, being the one who introduced many of us.

What do you think of this situation?
Have any of you had to deal with something like this? If so, how did you handle it?

The obviously needed Character Sheet Thread.

Players: VennDiagram; GeniusSavant; PhaedrusXY; Risada, Concerned Ninja Citizen, Flay Crimsonwind

Character Generation

Allowed Content: Any / all, but it must be run by me. WotC, 2nd party, 3rd party, Dragon, Homebrew, 3.X, some of the 3.0 may be used instead of the 3.5, by approval. No dungeon, due to my lack of possession of it.

Starting Level: 3rd
Starting Wealth: 2,700gp on starting gear. Max of one magic item. Gear subject to approval.
Starting Stats (before adjustments): 96 point buy; or array of 18, 18, 18, 18, 18, 18
Hit Points: Maxed on all dice

Protocols
  • When posting your character, the sheet must appear on this forum, and links must be included to any and all online articles and homebrew. This is so I can check sheets quickly and easily. Here are some templates for use, but feel free to do your own if desired.
  • The Play-By-Post Handbook has all of the important guidlines for playing pbp (duh)
  • Plz.typ.clairly. > Please Type Clearly
  • The world operates without much overall CR fluctuation. Which means that as you get to higher levels, the harder you'll have to search for a decent challenge, whereas at the start most fights will seem "Nintendo Hard" or even "Gygaxian" (though I hate that term's inaccuracy).
  • This setting does not have much in the way of magic gear, or magic using people. Do not expect to get lots of super-gear. That said, even a couple of "dynamic" items will push you above WBL
