I'll be adding info on the Alfheim state iin the Campaign world thread soon.
Yyrlis is walking the streets of Alfheim Town, the only really traditional city, and where most of the non-Elven population of the country of similar name. It's also the contact point for outsiders wishing to do business with the nation. You're kind of bored, and between jobs, and you've heard a local merchant may be hiring for help in dealing with herbs and mushroom procurement. Lo and behold he sees an old acquaintance in the road on the way there.
Ashgar is a new arrival in town, looking to escape trouble on the flying city that was his home to recently. Being of orcish descent has gotten him a lot of stares, and as he begins to question his decision he sees an elf who can vouch for him to the locals.
-
Yylris and his dog Tyri walk over to Ashgar. He speaks in common with a thick elvish accent.
"Greetings, Ashgar! Back so soon? What brings you hear? I just heard rumor some merchant is hiring help to get some herbs and mushrooms. I was about to check on how much it pays."
Yylris is a lanky wild elf with deep green eyes and long black hair pulled back in a ponytail. His skin is a deep tan color and any exposed skin on his arms shows a myriad of scars from years of brambles, thorns, branches, claws, and teeth. His clothes are all made of leather, fur, or wool and are dyed green or very dark brown. The only jewelry he wears is a necklace of plain wooden beads.
He is wearing near-black leather armor. He is walking with a quarterstaff, but has a longbow and spear on his back.
His dog Tyri is a large mastiff-sized dog with Rottweiler coloring. He is pretty adept at tackling and chewing on opponents and is a good tracker.
-
Ashgar is a tall, wide, shirtless orc wearing goggles. His shirtlessness is less about showing off how well-muscled he is and more about the difficulty he has in finding shirts that can accommodate all four of his arms (and also his wings).
He walks up to Yylris and picks him up in a rib-crunching four-armed hug. "Yylris my friend, is good to see you! People here give me funny looks, not want to give me job. Maybe your merchant pay me too!"
-
"I think if we bring what he wants, he will pay. Come. Let us go see."
Yylris goes to track down this merchant with Ashgar.
-
... Chickens on Cocaine ...
:lol
I lol'd.
I got shushed.
:D
-
You come upon a typically modest two story merchants shop. Most of them have their business downstairs and their sleeping quarters upstairs. This one is named Breezy's. Seems like a nice place.
While you're admiring it, an elf Kool-Aid man's his way through the front door from the inside and runs down the street screaming, covered in jaggedy bits of door.
-
Before decided to give chase, Yylris peeks inside with one eyebrow raised.
-
Ashgar scowls. Whenever he does that he gets yelled at but elves can just do whatever they want!
-
Robby
You see a fairly well stocked shop that has had some damage, apparently from animals getting loose from their cages. There's a few chickens pecking through some over turned sacks of flour for example. It also has the singularly odd choice of being decorated with a statue of a terrified man with his trousers down around his ankles. Knowledge Nature rolls plz (2). Also Local if you have it.

Thems not Chikins. Thems Cockatrices. And while you can't identify the substance thats not flour.
-
Yylris leans back and holds out his hand to make sure Ashgar doesn't go too near the hole.
"There are several cockatrices loose in there and at least one person was turned to stone. We should have a plan before going in; the peck of those beasts is deadly. I'm pretty good with a bow, but we'll want to keep them from getting out."
OOC: Are there any plants in there that could be affected by Entangle?
-
"How many cockathings?" Ashgar asks.
-
OOC: Also, how many cockatrices?
-
2 cockatrices, nno plants
shelves though
-
To Ashgar: "I count two of them? How are you thinking of dealing with them?"
Yylris draws out his bow and casts Longstrider on himself (and his dog via Share Spells). He tells Tyri to stay (one of his tricks) so he doesn't try to fight the dangerous bird/lizards.
-
".....punching?" he says hopefully.
-
Before going in, Yylris summons 1d3 wolves with Summon Nature’s Ally II since he knows summoned animals don’t truly die.

The smaller ones perhaps, the bigger one no. There's a loud thumping upstairs suddenly. The lizards look nervously towards the ceiling, and one begins fumbling with a window latch. You're pretty sure they're looking to run.

Yylris mentioned the "chicken lizards", but IIRC, his Knowledge check wasn't good enough for him to identify them, so that's probably all he can say.
-
"Shit! Leafeater, put out a BOLO for Cockatrice, and get help cordoning off this block"

Ashgar eyes the ferret suspiciously.
-
Yylris casts Detect Magic.

You detect maic radiating from the ferret to the guard on round 1. On round 2 you notice it is a faint aura. Going for round 3?

Yeah, he'll go for round 3 and tell people "There's definitely magic coming from that ferret. I can tell what type in a few seconds..."

It's transmutation.
-
Yylris tells everyone, although he's not really sure what the thing does.
He hopes that his winter blanket might be able to block line of effect if he can get close enough. He attempts to get close enough to toss the blanket on the thing, and hopefully pin it the next round.

"Hopefully not the dangerous 'chickens' inside."

Ashgar shakes his head. "You get chickens, I wait here. Maybe I get that job, eh?"
-
Yylris quickly runs to find a butcher.
-
You doing anything before Robby returns Nan?
-
Ashgar is ready to grab at the ferret if it tries to run away.
-
Robby quickly finds a butcher. In the meantime more "animals" begin to appear. Some of them with obvious magical powers. Most seem more inconveniencing than potentially fatal tho.
-
Robby, when you return there are guards everywhere chasing critters. One is still pinned by the ferret.
-
Yylris throws some chicken to see if it draws the ferret off the guard.

The ferret glances between the chicken and the guard. You can tell it doesn't want to let the guard loose, but it wants that chikin. It does seem to be more friendly to you.

Yylris tries to remain non threatening. How many other animals are out there? Are other people pinned?
-
There's about a dozen now. A heavily armored rodent of some sort. A large black fly that appears to be capable of summoning wind. A couple of perfectly normal chickens. A perfectly normal kitty. Some sort of tiny pig. Some mouse/hamster-ish critters. And a particularly large Shrew. That's flying. And wearing a cape.
-
".....Ylris my friend, I do not understand what is happening."
-
"I thought things were pretty messed up inside the building."
Are these animals attacking people?
Yylris looks toward the flying shew with the cape: "Hey, nice cape! What's going on?"
-
Not so much attacking as obviously fearful. The shrew seems more straightforward.
"Hell if I know. Ate some fruit, passed out, woke up in a cage with these critters. Lady running the show is suddenly a statue, and we're all free due to I don't even know what. I'd stay well clear of that cat if I were you."
-
”Makes enough sense, I guess. Sound like you had a lucky break after an unlucky one.
Do any of you need Dispel Magic or Remove Curse cast? I don’t know what all that lady did. ”

"Dunno. I think me the only one capable of talking. Food would be nice. Might wanna fetch a Druid too."

Stopping illegal animal trading sounds right up Yylris' alley.

"The Guards are stretched thin, and we sometimes hire outside help if they seem trustworthy. There is a thriving trade in beasts, drugs and other natural resources in the nearby forest. You seem well suited to forest work, you like animals, and your Orcish companion may give you an in-road among some of the more insular outliers who don't trust Elves."

Yylris asks Ashgar: "Do you want to check it out? I've cast several of my spells, so I'll probably want to sleep before we undertake anything huge, but I'm curious to see what's going on, at least."

Ashgar thinks for a second and then asks, "We get paid?"
-
"I think we have to go there and ask."

You arrive at a rather large guard station/temporary jail. There are multitudes of people of all sorts either being brought in, being bailed out, etc. Eventually you get to a window, and a smartly dressed young elf woman smiles at you from behind her finely waxed mustache and asks what she can do for you?
-
Now fully understanding what is going on, Ashgar says, "We are here to get paid for hurting racists who make animals that talk!"
-
"Erm... we were told to come here to help deal with the illegal animal trade."

She looks momentarily confused at Ashgar, but catches on quickly after Ylris chimes in. "You sure? You'll be undercover dealing with some not so nice people."

You know Powderleaf is a plant whose leaves are stimulant that can be concentrated into a powder form.
-
"About all I know about the leaf is it can be powdered and made into a drug."
-
"A very addictive stimulant, yes. It's becoming the scourge of the territory. There's an organized crime network growing and selling it thats begun to branch out into different crimes. Poaching. Smuggling. Humanoid and Beast trafficking. Black magic. We'd like to infiltrate them but they hate Elves, with the exception of Druids who have agricultural magic, or less favored sorts like Drow. Therefore we're relying on hiring others to infiltrate them. You'd be undercover spies trying to infiltrate a gang of criminals, and in constant danger of being caught. You may have to do some questionable things to keep up the ruse as well. On the plus side we can provide you with magical assistance. And maybe some training as well. If you still want to go through with this we'll put you through a weeks training before we throw you in jail and 'reluctantly' release you in front of known recruiters."
-
Yylris considers this for a while before ultimately deciding it's probably for the greater good.
"I think I should do this."
-
Ashgar realizes that the most important question hasn't actually been answered yet. "What do we get paid?"
-
"There'll be a bounty on each criminal whose arrest you cause. The more people we bust due to your information the more you get paid. We'll also be assigning you some equipment and providing free healing if you can manage to avoid blowing your cover. Plus we can negotiate a monthly stipend." :D
-
Yylris looks to Ashgar. "I'm good with that."
-
Ashgar nods. More people punched means more pay.
-
"We have to be careful, though. As much as I want to kick these guys asses, I think we have to earn their trust and figure out how to take the most of them down."
He drops his voice, "Although if we do fight, we'll have to make sure there are no witnesses left to blow our cover..."
He looks at the person they're talking to, "So, when do we get this equipment? Somehow after we get out of jail?"
-
"It'll be released with you as part of your possessions."

"Can we get anything magical? If so, my favored weapon is a spear, but I also use a composite longbow. My favored armor is leather. Anything to improve those would be much appreciated.
Magical chain (shirt)* barding would be nice for my dog.
Other than that, anything to aid in healing would be nice, be it potions, a wand, or a Healing Belt. Perhaps a Bag of Holding or Handy Haversack.
As far as non-magical items go, I am fairly self-sufficient. Enough arrows for my bow and a spell component pouch are probably the only things I might exhaust."
* If you're playing that a druid's animal companion has the same non-metallic armor restrictions of the druic, Yylris would ask for leather here, instead.

Yylris nods in approval. "Where did this happen the last time, and how long ago?"
-
"This evening last, about 2 miles north of here. Our people get taken whenever they are alone, so we make sure to send out teams now. We've never seen or heard whatever is picking them off. I am tired of explaining to the families of my men why their husbands and fathers aren't coming home."
-
"Do they ever get attacked in teams or only when alone? We might be able to follow them, hidden, to see if we can lure this thing out."
-
"Only one team has been taken. Everyone else was alone, even if they had only stepped away to defecate."
-
Ashgar only half pays attention knowing that Ylris is better at this thinking stuff.
-
You two doing anything before you leave?
-
Nope, I'm good.
-
Yylris should be all set to go. He still has all his spell slots.

There is something staying just out of sight, following about 50 yards behind the cart.

Yylris gets his bow ready and tells Asgar "There's something just out of sight behind the cart, maybe 50 yards out. Be ready."
He warns the driver there might be something out there.
-
Ashgar ignores the crossbows and gets ready to fly towards any danger that appears.
-
The drivers encourage the horses to run faster, and you barrel towards that looks more like a fortified compound than a farm. You pause at the gates to be let in, which you are quickly enough. Your pursuer either couldn't keep up, or elected not to. Biter explains to the head farmhand who you are.
"Name's Quimby, an I'm in charge here. I need names and what shift you wanna take."
-
”My name is Yylris. I can take any shift. Do the people who go missing tend to get taken at night or day?”
-
"Time of day doesn't seem to matter anymore. It started at night, now it's anytime someone's alone."
-
"Ashgar can see in the dark but likes to work with Ylris," Ashgar says.
-
After (or before, depending on the time) we take our watch, Yylris suggests checking out the latest site of abduction to look for tracks or any other clues.

You are (unsurprisingly) given the night watch. You find tracks, but they prove impossible to follow. You aren't sure what the creature is. Your best guess is that it's not a creature with toes or hooves. Making some sort of vermin likely.
-
To Ashgar: "We'll likely need bait of some sort. Either one of the other guards, or one of us. The advantage of another guard is you and I will be elsewhere, hopefully ready to ambush."
-
Asghar shrugs, "Being bait is easy job, bait can punch!"
-
whats the plan? There's a copious field of product, with a small clearing between it and the forest. The post is in front of the field.

He nocks an arrow.

You think you've been made, something begins running away from you in the field.

It finally stops moving after a heaving rattle.
-
Do we feel like this beast is what has been nabbing people? Either way, it's probably worth dragging it back to camp, unless it's too heavy or we're too far. If that's the case, we can probably just bring back the head.
"Ashgar, are you injured?"
-
Ashgar shakes his head. "Ashgar doing great!"
Getting a sense of Yylris' thoughts he asks "You want Ashgar to pick it up?"
-
"I can help carry. I just wanted to make sure this thing wasn't too big to move."
-
(Can the two of you move 800 pounds?)
-
(Can the two of you move 800 pounds?)
Yylris can lift 375 off the ground and push/drag 875. I’m not sure how far we have to go. If it’s several miles, he’s fine bringing back the head.
-
Asghar can pick up 800 pounds and have a five foot movement speed or push/drag it without issues.
-
The bodies decomposition seems to be speeding up. Within minutes, it'll largely be a bubbling stain on the ground.
-
"Hmmm... that didn't work so well. I guess we'll just have to tell them what we found."
If there are any identifiable or interesting pieces, Yylris grabs one. Other than that, he heads back to the camp.
-
Ashgar follows along without a care in the world.
-
"You're back early. What happened?"
-
"You're back early. What happened?"
"We got attacked by a large spider-like creature. I attempted to bring back its head, but the entire thing dissolved into ichor.
We were looking for information when the thing beset us. When we got closer, it looked to be undead rather than a living spider. We stabbed and struck it countless times before it fell. Because of how it dissolved, it's hard to tell if this was what was ambushing people, if it's unrelated, or if it's one of many. We will have to check the area for other similar creatures as well as clues to their origin.
In the meantime, should anyone encounter something like this, they are extremely resistant. They need to be hacked to pieces. Arrows and bolts will likely bounce off or otherwise perturb it little. Make sure anyone who is out of the camp has an axe or sword with them."
-
"We need to send out a scout team. Do either of you need a rest?"
-
"A rest would probably be for the best."
-
"Ashgar always ready for action but Ashgar can wait."
-
"You'v got two hours, then we're off."
Either of you doing anything?

"You'v got two hours, then we're off."

If he doesn’t have time to replenish spells, Yylris is ready to go.
-
Ashgar doesn't have anything productive to do so he is ready to go.
-
"Do either of you need an axe?"
-
"If you have a scimitar, or maybe a sickle, that'd be fantastic. A scimitar would be best, if that's possible."
-
"Ashgar punches!"
-
"It's a farm, we have plenty of sickles. All right here's whats up. You two are taking us to where you came across this thing so we can see what our Wizard has to say as we do sweeps of the area. We'll be looking for more of these, because one zombie usually implies possible hordes nearby. Everyone is to maintain stealth, and not to take on anything you can't put down. We're not heroes, we grow leaf. Don't make me have to explain to your families why their fathers aren't coming home."
Your travel is uneventful, and there is a large stain where the spider 'died'. What are you two doing?
-
First, Yylris points to the stain reiterating that this is where we put the creature down. Once he answers any questions they have about the events or the creature, he helps either take on a defensive perimeter, or go with Ashgar to look for any more as the situation warrants.
-
Ashgar looks around in case there is another one of these things to punch. He hopes not, he did not enjoy punching it.
Feel free to roll spot/search/whatever as appropriate for me if needed.

-
"Yes, we have a few at base. Lets head back and rest up ofr the night. If it took the two of you as much effort as it sounded like to put down one, a pack of them will be beyond the means of anyone we leave behind. We launch an official war party in the morning."
Anything you two doing?

Resting to regain spells, first and foremost. If there's any time after, Yylris can help with watch.
"Again, make sure people have chopping weapons."
-
Ashgar doesn't really have anything he cares about doing.

More spider tracks. Pretty soon you're off and running tracking them, MUCH to the displeasure of the dogs. They make it VERY CLEAR they do not want to be here. In fact their hackles raise at some point and they refuse to move forward anymore.

That being said, for today, I can turn dirt into thick, deep mud which will slow attackers. I can also heal one person if someone is seriously injured."
Yylris has Lesser Vigor prepped and could heal someone up to 13 hp over 13 rounds.

"Spider Clan? The Spider Clan. Fuck."
-
"Yeah, I'm not sure how bad this is, or what we should work on, now. Does it make the most sense for us to help them for now, or should we take advantage of the chaos to look for information?"
-
"The Spider Clan is major bad news. They may even turn to us for help, in which case you need to remain under cover. Still try to find out what you can, but watch your back. The Clan are threats to nations, not local organized crime. Best you head back now."
Meanwhile back at the Monk:

"...there's a big camp near by."

"Thanks bro. I'm sposed to scare them off today, and I'm late." He then scampers off.

Yylris runs back to camp, but off to the side to hopefully avoid the spider. He casts Longstrider as soon as the spider is out of earshot to help speed him up.

Ashgar looks very confused as Ylris runs off and starts following.

"Dunno. Todd not ask many questions. Todd just take moneys and do jobs. Todd was hoping this easy job, and it could be done without the usual violence. Most peoples scream and run away when they see me."
-
"Oh, yeah, that makes things tricky. Maybe you don't need to use violence, though, Todd. Maybe what these guys want and what your boss wants aren't actually at odds.
I think they're just doing farming, or something."
-
"Farming powderleaf. Powderleaf bad."
-
"Oh. I didn't know."
Yylris looks at the others and shrugs. How are they reacting?
-
it can be summed up as :o :twitch
-
"I think they wanna keep doing the whole powderleaf thing, though, you know?"
Yylris readies an action to cast Entangle, should Todd decide to resort to violence.

Ashgar finally arrives and looks even more confused than before.
-
"If I'm not scary enough they'll send others. Lots of scary guys up in the mountains."
-
"That does sound scary. You mean guys even bigger than you, or just a lot of guys like you? How many guys?"

-
"Well... maybe we can work together to stop those people from snooping, if they're the real problem."
-
"Can they at least act scared? Todd can't go back without scaring them."
Elf leader: "Eek."
-
"I think we can do better, guys.
Oh fuck! A giant spider! RUN!"
Yylris runs about 150 feet back to some trees to fake hiding, looking back to see if the other elves and Ashgar follow.
-
Ashgar decides that punching this thing isn't what Ylris wants so he flies up into a tree.
-
If others follow, "Sorry, guys, but I don't think we can deal with all of Todd's friends. We might have to find a way to work with them, as weird as that is. At least he seems way more... reasonable than I would have expected."
-
"He's mentally deficient is what he is."
Todd looks proud.
-
"Yeah, but I don't think he's lying. Do you think the group can fend off that many spiders?"
-
"No...the bad of it is, I need permission to make any deals from further up the chain, and it's nearing harvest time. They aren't going to want to do anything till then. I need to send word back to the head of the group and ask what to do. We just need to convince the spiders to not kill us before they reply."
-
Yylris yells over to Todd, and starts walking back: "Hey, Todd, there's a big harvest coming up. I think if they can get that done, they might be more willing to relocate, or come up with some other solution.
Do you or your boss have anything you might need help with in the mean time? I'm a bit of a problem-solver myself, and maybe we can reach some good middle ground where everyone is happy."
-
"I can ask, but he's gonna be mad. I think he wants them gone before harvest."
-
Ashgar asks, "What if we make you gone instead?"
-
"My sisters wouldn't like that. They're mean."
-
Yylris is losing patience with Todd's willingness to find any middle ground, but he's also worried about how bad the response will be. He shrugs, and looks to Ashgar the rest of the group.
"I tried, but I don't have any other ideas. Shall we?"
-
"Shall we....punch?" Ashgar asks, hoping that's what Ylris was asking about.
-
"Shit, this could go either way. Best we contact our boss, have him go back to his boss, and let them negotiate. We're farmers, not mercenaries."
-
"Fair enough...
They have to talk to their boss, Todd. Either way, you scared them out of this area for now."
-
"Well...okay I guess. I may have to come back though."
You aren't sure how a giant spider the size of an elephant skips away, but he manages.
The Elves: "Fuuuuuuck..."
-
"Yeah, this isn't good. It sounds like there's a lot of them. How long until the harvest comes in? Sadly, any types of barriers and defenses I can think of can just be climbed over by spiders.
I don't know any type of illusion magic that could be handy in hiding the area or making fake, scary-looking allies."
-
"We can start harvesting some now, but all the fields won't be ready for a week. I think they intend to chase us out to take the fields for themselves. I can't have that, my people would starve. If the boss comes here...well she has a reputation for violence. And we can't ask the Sheriff to interfere because he'd arrest us all."

Yylris moves up, casting Lesser Vigor on Ashgar, granting him fast healing 1 for 13 rounds. He then puts up his fists and gets ready to get punched, since he's not much of a fist fighter.

And we're over to Yylris.
-
What does the ground they're standing on look like? Yylris is contemplating casting Soften Earth and Stone. It will only work on natural dirt or stone, not cut stones. Ideally, he's hoping they're on wet dirt, which he can turn to mud. He won't waste his time casting it if the ground is dry or stone.
-
It's dry dirt.
-
Yylris casts Blinding Spittle on one that hasn't yet been hit:
