Chapter 1: Subversion
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:09:50 AM »
(click to show/hide)

The Days of Ashes are over, and the Great Stone Stairs of Borean are a river of black and grey as the petitioners, dressed in traditional mourning, descend the mountain back toward their homes.  The holiday ended this morning with the rising sun, and Singorn's capitol city, filled to capacity these last 7 days, seems empty and strangely desolate despite the normal bustle of market-day preparations.

A light spring rain in the wee hours washed the grime away, and the city seems fresh and new in the orange morning light.  You had planned to leave hours ago, ahead of the crowds, and yet... in Borean you remain.  You can't explain why.  You can't even explain why you came here for the Days of Ashes -- you had no petitions to make to the God-king, and the Days are observed throughout the Empire.  You could have celebrated anywhere.

With no real plans, you feel the urge to wander the city in the morning, watching the hawks soar between spires, and housewives in their somber garb sweep their porches.  People walking the street watch you warily, but without comment; adventurers strange and exotic move through these streets often, and the denizens of Borean are used to it.

You find yourself in the Great Square before the Palace, looking up at the massive edifice.  The architects who designed it were incredibly skilled; the Palace is the epitome of power and grace, a suitable home for the mythic personage that inhabits it.  You look about you, and see other adventurers gathered around the fountain in the Square, each stranger than the last.  What is this?

Then the huge wooden door of the Palace swings smoothly open, and Singorn himself steps into the Square.

The force of just his presence is almost overwhelming, though after a moment or two you grow somewhat accustomed to it.  The God-king stands in a shaft of light which peeks over the buildings, flooding the Square with wan sunshine.  He is dressed in breeches of loose grey silk, and a grey tunic which leaves his arms bare, with his symbol in white emblazoned on the chest.  The morning chill seems not to bother him, but their is a hint of sadness and old pain in his eyes.

The God-king speaks, his voice soft and yet clearly audible.  "I know you.  You have grown in the past years... new memories, new skills.  This is my doing, and it is why you are here.  I have called you here to request your aid."

He takes another step forward into the square.  You notice that there are guards behind him in the doorway, but they seem superfluous.  How could anything threaten this man?

"Each of you has within you both the potential for greatness, and the memory of greatness realized.  It is my hope that these two things in combination will be sufficient for all of us to survive the trials ahead... for the portents suggest that we will need everything in our power."

Singorn beckons, and a group of clerks scurry out of the Palace, dividing the assembled adventurers into three groups.  "I will speak to each group of you in turn.  If it pleases you, follow my attendants to your respective staging areas.  There is much to be done."

An attendant and two guards lead seven of you into a 30-foot-tall, trapezoidal chamber; one of the walls has an unfinished mural stretching up nearly to the ceiling, a stylized depiction of the Fall of Regnus.  The attendant names it the Remembrance Room, before leaving with the guards.  For the moment, the seven of you are alone.

What appears to be a large man covered head-to-toe in metal plate armor approaches the mural, looking over its features.

"I remember the days of the Great City. And yet, I was late for it. A pity. What a wonder it must have been in its prime."

The large man stands almost unnaturally still as he seems to reminisce.

"Its splendors were many. It was a place worth dying for, believe me."

As he speaks, he seems to glow slightly before the phenomenon fades.

"Yes, I believe it... and the Lord of this realm, I did not anticipate being affected as I had by his power. It is unsettling to me that I should have felt... threated... or weak... I am used to being in the presence of powerful entities, conceivably more powerful than He, but never had I felt so cowed... and still, there is trust in him. How peculiar."

Henk made a sound like a combination of a grunt and a sigh as he leaned cautiously against a pillar, contemplating the room and its occupants.  He wore pure black, spiked armor that seemed somewhat out of place on him, as if it symbolized a very different time for him that had since passed.

He observed the large man as he spoke, but ended up feeling a twinge of annoyance at him.

"He's a complicated person with a lot on His mind.  Would you expect anything less?"

An exceptionally tall and muscular man, wearing the light armor, helmet, and shield of an infantryman, enters with the rest. His long, stark white hair protrudes from beneath his helm, and though he bears no visible weapons, his eyes glow from within the helm with an energy that leaves no doubt that he is dangerous. He quietly surveys the room, until his eyes stop on a young woman who has equally white hair, and after observing her for a few moments he says "Glacia?

The horned woman is of long and thin build, and she more or less roots herself to place in a chosen spot, scanning over the room and the others with wide open eyes. Her gaze lingers on the man in armor, and just briefly skips to Henk when he speaks. "It's because he is a politician, too. Trusting others with things is the difference between common sense and paranoia." Her young-looking face is set in a carefully neutral expression, but she radiates a certain sense of calm anticipation.

"There are no politics involved, young one. The God-King has no one directly opposing his rule, there is no vote. It is an autocracy plain and simple. But the people want for little, and there is a sense of security in knowing that though the rule is not in the hands of the many, the realm is protected by a powerful figure. My point, though, is that his status as both authority and religious figure grants him immeasurable power compared to others of similar station."

The armored man (at least, it looked and sounded like a man) turned from the mural to view his contemporaries.

"I mean no disrespect, nor did this one mean to increase the agitation levels by 5.867%. Please excuse... my... rudeness. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hadron. It is this one's pleasure to meet you all."

Henk gave Hadron a quizzical look after he made the percentage agitation measurement.  The raven perched on his shoulder also seemed to give him the eye, though it might have been distracted by the glint of head-to-toe armor.

"I've only ever heard Warforged and other constructs use such precision when dealing with emotions.  Should we assume you're similar?  If we are to work together it would probably be in our best interests to know the true nature of our companions."

At this point Henk paused for a moment to decide how to further respond.

"I'm Henk, and it should be quite obvious I'm a half-ogre." he said simply.

"I am no mere construct. I once was a standard unit of designation: Inevitable. I possessed an intellect of my own, though I admit it was bound to the orders of my superiors. Now I am... well, not more, nor less... different, rather. I can feel emotions now, besides having free will. It is thoroughly unsettling, but it has proven its worth."

Hadron extends his hand to Henk. "I am privileged to meet you, half-ogre Henk."

"I am likewise privileged to meet you, Hadron." Henk said as he shook Hadron's hand, his former annoyance no longer present as he realized Hadron was still getting used to the new situation.

The lean, dark-haired slip of a woman dressed in robes stands quietly in the middle of the crowd, barely coming up to Henk's elbows. "I can't imagine what he's been through. When he speaks, it's not his power that demands respect. His words carry the weight of his entire life. All his struggles, all his losses..." She stares at the unfinished mural, falling silent again.

Sen closes her eyes and nods once, but remains silent otherwise. It's unclear to whom she's nodding, perhaps to nobody in particular. After staying quiet for a few moments, she continues the round of introductions. "Sen Mira, student of Qi Xing Luo."

"Of Qi Xing Luo, you say?" A dark-haired woman in expensive clothing approaches Sen. "I am Fumiko, eldest daughter of House Natsukawa." she says with a slight bow. "I must admit, I didn't expect to find others from Suul here, though seeing the variety of the... people who met this summons, that now seems rather foolish." At that last line her eyes flicker back in the direction of the square.

"I regret that I have not had the opportunity to meet your master myself, but perhaps you are familiar with our house? We hosted Qi Xing Luo a number of years ago, on his travels."

Henk paused somewhat uncomfortably at the mention of Suul.  Having never had proper education regarding the nobility, he didn't bother trying to recall any information on House Natsukawa or Qi Xing Luo.

"My mother, Jun Han, was a human from Suul.  Given the circumstances of my birth though, I am not truly part of any House.  I was raised in Jinan, for whatever it's worth."

Upon realizing someone was trying to get into his head, Henk once again became irritated and remarked "To whomever is trying to get into my head, I suggest getting out.  You won't like what you find."

As if to punctuate his words, the raven on Henk's shoulder gave a slightly disturbing caw.

Chihiro turns away from the mural to gaze at the latest pair to introduce themselves, bowing after Fumiko has finished speaking. "My name is Chihiro Arai. I studied under Master Ryo until I was beckoned here." She frowns vaguely as Fumiko's mental probe reaches her, turning her gaze to the disgruntled half-ogre.

Glacia did not remember why she had come here, to the city of Boreon. Her nightmares, which had been disturbing her sleep over the past two years, had been strangely absent as of late. Perhaps the hustle and bustle of the city had simply left her too tired. Or perhaps the sight of mountains similar to the ones in whose shadow she had spent her early childhood were a comfort to her cursed soul. Her eyes had been fixed on the God-King as she listened to his commanding voice. Despite having little faith in gods or beings of such power, she had to acknowledge that the man was far more than any king, so perhaps the title was appropriate for that reason alone.

"Glacia?

Startled, she turns at the mention of her name. There was conversation now and she had clearly become lost in thought that she had not paid much attention to the ones gathered with her. Her eyes fell on the tall man with white hair. A memory flashed before her eyes of a boy with the same colored hair. "Ty...Ty?" a grin flashes on her face as she charges her childhood friend, jumping into his arms. "And here I thought you had been lost at sea. Or had done something to get into massive debt and been forced into manual labor. Or been captured by pirates. Or..."

She rambles on a few more unflattering possibilities, before drawing back. "The Days of Ashes, in the Capitol. Yes, it does make sense that if my thick-headed 'brother' were to show up anywhere, it would be here!"

Glacia remembers where she is and the presence of others as she feels a slight tingle in her head.  She gracefully turns her slender body to the others. "I have forgotten my manners. I am Glacia Frostvale. I imagine you were all drawn here as well?"

"Ty" catches his "sister" and swings her around, laughing more loudly at each silly conjecture, then sits her down and says more solemnly "The truth is even stranger than your stories. I started having dreams, and then my dreams turned to reality...

I have taken up going by the name Zeus for the last couple of years, as I now command power over storms and lightning... and my old life seemed pretty distant." The look in his eyes also is distant for a moment, then he turns back to the girl and says "But what are you doing here?"

Glacia shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know why, but I just felt like coming here for the Days of Ashes. It just felt...right for some reason."

Putting the thought aside, she smiled at him. "So you're the mighty Zeus, hmm? Strangely, I can believe you. I've also had dreams, though I can never remember them. And they started at about the same time this did."

She casually touches a pillar and as the heat is sucked from it a small crack forms, surrounded by numerous crystals of ice. When she turns back to 'Zeus', Glacia notices her shadow stretching out into the air to form a creature next to her. "And I've also made a friend!" She knelt down next to her companion, scratching behind it behind it's ears making it whimper a bit.  "You want some attention too, Nighty? Awww, who's a good boy?"

"You people seem to have missed the part where Singorn said he called us here. Likely through the dreams you have had, or the pull we felt toward the city at this exact time. It is not mere coincidence. The odds of that are..."  Hadron catches himself before speaking the exact numerical calculation, and instead says, "staggering."

"Yes," speaks a deep voice from the door, "I called you here."

Singorn enters, moving slowly up to the mural and giving it his full attention for a long moment.  His presence is more subdued than in the square, though you are most definitely aware of him.  Then he turns back to the group, inclining his head to each of you in turn as he speaks.  "My apologies for keeping you waiting... I hope you understand, this is a complicated situation, but I will explain."

"So that I may avoid repeating things you already know, may I ask: what information do you have already about the events which has been named the Shadow War?" He hesitates, and the hint of sadness in his eyes deepens very, very slightly.  "What do you know about the organization called the Brotherhood of Night?"
