Fastest Non-Instantaneous Method of Traveling
« on: October 11, 2013, 05:29:24 PM »
Alright, we're going hardcore on this.

First of all, be a Ghost of some description. Yeah. You'll need some form of mitigation for metamagic.

Set up your standard Locate City Bomb, except you need to add the following metamagic feats for this to work:

1. Ghost-Touch: Makes it only damage ghosts. +0 Metamagic.
2. Earthbound Spell: Lets you not be in the center of the area. +2 Metamagic.
3. Nonlethal substitution: Makes the ouchies nonlethal. +1 Metamagic.

Alright, now you drop the prepped spell in the space next to you, and get a random non-ghost friend to step on that space.

You have now been flung CL x 10 miles in a direction of your choice, taking massive amounts of nonlethal damage. Now nap it off, soldier.

This isn't particularly practical, just kinda silly. Great for if you hate traveling but don't mind being unconscious due to being in an explosion to get there.

Another idea is a tube with one open end on a swivel; cast an earthbound spell into the base of the tube, get above it, and drop a random animal into the space. Blam, you just got shot out of a cannon. With preposterous range. Be sure to have a contingent Feather Fall on, or else the fall might hurt.

Just angle it right, aim it in the right direction, and FIRE!

Ghostwalk ghosts are outsiders; you need to take the damage in the first place to get tossed by the spell.

Another way, if you wanna go fast and if you don't want to kill everyone around you before trying that.

Start with Master Air for 90 ft - 12,000 gp for an all day custom magic item (Which most of these are, unless otherwise mentioned)
Haste increases it to 120 ft. (2,000 gp, from Trapsmith)
Aerial Alacrity increases it to 150 ft (Spell Level 4, CL 7: 56,000 gp)
Improved Speed (The Feat) increases it to 170 ft
Cloud Wings increases it to 200 ft (12,000 gp)

Get the trident that allows you to double your move speed.
Panther Mask for Run
You're moving at 400 ft/round, running at 2,000 ft/round.

Now the spell (in an item) Fly like an Arrow.  It's from DR #308, good for dragons, but an artificer can put it in an item.  Probably a staff/wand.

It multiplies your fly speed by 10 if you spend a round travelling in a straight line first.

20,000 ft/round.  3,333.33 feet/second, which is Mach 2.99  You're travelling as fast as a very speedy modern jet fighter.  Probably not the fastest, but what I attached to my iron man a while ago.

Ghost-Touch spells only affect ghosts. That's why I have it on there.

Basically, the only people who get affected are Ghostwalk ghosts. Nothing else takes damage, so nothing else is affected.

Oh, I see.  Neat.  I neglected to read the first post, I was so excited about the title, and so I responded with the fastest fly speed I'd achieved thinking it was a request, however.  Sometimes it's best to read first, and I have done so now.  Do pardon.  10 miles/CL is very fast indeed.  200 miles in 6 seconds is 33.33~ mps, 119988 mph.  That's almost twice as fast as the Earth moves around the sun.

I think this can fit on SirPercival's CL mini-loop caster.
You could get some part of the way across the galaxy.

First of all, how are you targeting it with Permanency? I don't think it is one of the options for that spell.

Also, for Windwalk... That ain't moving you at about 5 miles per second at minimum, is it? This was about the fastest, not the most practical.  :lol

FotD didn't exist yet when they made Permanency. Really, given the pattern of 500 XP/level of the spell to be made permanent, you could apply it to just about any non-instantaneous spell outside PHBI with the argument of 'they didn't think of Permanency when they wrote this spell'.

This is faster:

Master Earth

It's transmutation, not conjuration (teleportation).  Move to any spot in or on the earth, so long as it is in contact with earth. Standard action.

Here is a list of all the non-core spells that explicitly work with Permanency, due to either the text of the spell itself or a sidebar in a book.

Note which spell is not on there.

@ksbsnowowl: I have to change the title to "Fastest Non-Instantaneous Method of Traveling", don't I? Fine, I'll go do that.

Technically not instant, but when you fire an arrow the game doesn't account for fly speed.  Regardless if you're shooting at something 10 ft away or 1000 ft away, if its in your maximum range it gets there within 6 seconds or less.

Enter Distant Shot.  It works on any ranged weapon.  A ballista is a weapon.  Strap a halfling onto a tree, load him up, and aim for that distant star on the right.
Mudada.

I wouldn't count that as "fastest", just like I wouldn't count Pun-Pun going around with hir infinite speed. I think I've got the fastest non-infinite "speed" here?

I suppose a Hulking Hurler "catcher" with a readied action, at the other end.
Read it an weep NASA.
