Handbook Discussion / Re: A Guide to Free D&D Discussion Thread

I was searching google for a rules question related to the raiment of the four, and I was suprised to find one of these (and the other 5 were a simple url change away). No idea where these were given, but they are on WotC's site, so...

Handbook hasn't been updated in a LONG time, but I figure a find of this size is worth noting.

Oh look, Int to Diplomacy (persuasion only, no Gather Information) and bluff (lying only, no feint)

One thing yet to be mentioned is how Paizo can't remember that Metamagic doesn't actually change spell level, and restricts a lot of stuff by spell level, rather than slot used, leading to easily broken stuff. For instance, Channel the Gift lets a spontaneous caster stack any metamagic he wants onto a spell and still only use its original spell slot, and with Arcane bloodline (naturally or via EH) you can do this to two spells.

The Magus can access the Wizard list for an Arcana (or feat) and near capstone, just at the same spell levels and 1-6 casting.

Synthergist Summoner is also an intresting gish in a can and being charisma based, you can also get 3 spells off the sorc/wiz spell list with Improved Eldritch Heritage:Arcane (And Half-Elf, who are the "default" summoner thanks to extra evo points, gets the first requirement feat for free). Strictly inferior to normal Summoner though (though the IEH:Arcane bit works for any charisma caster).

Paladin has some pretty crazy spell in Pathfinder in addition to its smite, most of which are for making you better at ass kicking than utility though. Litany of Righteous is a swift action level 2 spell that makes evil creatures take double (!) damage from creatures with a good aura (Which means you, plus any allied clerics and prehaps some obscurer class). Its cousin Litany of Sloth disables AoO and (more importantly) defensive casting (cast it while holding a reach weapon, charge with your armor spikes and non-Batman casters are in a pickle). 13 Int (ouch) gets you spells from the cleric, bard or inquisitor list through unsanctioned knowledge (not as good as Sword of the Arcane Order, but still neat). (I also just realized that while Pathfinder has an Extra x feat for pretty much every class feature, Extra Smite is absent.)

Uh... moving on.

While technically third party, War Mind is a lot easier to enter thanks to the new skill system (so you only need to blow 1 feat, pick a psionic race or dip a Psionic class, and Soulknife works for that dip while maintaining full BAB, HD, 4+int skill points and Power Attack as a bonus feat) and Psionics lacks the inexplicable melee nerfs of PF. Cavalier 4/Soulknife 1/Warmind 10 is pretty neat. Keep full BAB, get some pretty good manifesting, a full progression Animal Companion (thanks to Horse Master) and a method of getting pounce on your charger. Shame Cavalier mount doesn't get share spells for sharing the powers.

Being immune to poison, you can do worse things with a feat than Expanded Knowledge: Psionic Minor Creation to make buckets of Black Lotus Extract for free. PMC is an all around pretty cool power even without poison shenanigans.

The comment about Ill Omen was separate from the Portents comments.

edit: OH! Great use for Beguiling Gift. The old Holy (or other aligned) Arrows. IIRC, Pathfinder removes the Wraith clause but not the fact that it results in death, which is generally a boon to that tactic (unless you are a Gravewalker and want a new pet). Still book to head worthy, but RAW legal.

edit 2: I'm not sure Poison the spell was nerfed. The initial damage is lower (but higher in the end, but most fights don't last that long, could take advantage of the Witch's invisibility access), The 3.5 version allows 2 saves to negate it entirely, the 2nd having a different way to calculate the DC for some reason, the PF allows only 1. Not sure it's a GOOD spell, but not sure it's nerfed.

^ Wonder why that isn't in the SRD.

Fabricate seems very abuse-able given the raw materials are the Material Components. The spell allows you to grab ANY mundane item worth less than 300 gold instantaneously.

Spellsight Spectacles (2,500 gp MIC) gives you a +5 competence bonus to use UMD.

A 3.5 item though. Luckily Pathfinder gives a new "Headband" slot and a Circlet of Persuasion occupies the Head/Helmet slot instead. No Synergy bonuses in PF either. Still auto-success.

Just throw those scrolls into a bag of holding where it is a full round action to retrieve, or a move action via the infiinite scrollcase (can store up to 50 scrolls costs 2,800gp), or a move action for 10 scrolls via a belt of hidden pouches (5,000 gp) and a standard action for the remaining 20 scrolls.

Bag of holding is too big. Efficient Quiver is cheep, holds 60 items the same "general size and shape as an arrow" (which is loose enough that a polarm counts as a bow) and "6 to 12 inches long, 1/4 inch thick, and weighs no more than 1 ounce" easily fits an arrow, and the scroll (8-1/2 inches wide and 11) could potentially fit in the javelin slot and is at most a move action or an action that can be done as part of movement per standard drawing rules. Plus is has none of the nasty clauses about being damaged.

As for cool spells to abuse this with, a 1 charge wand of Bestow Grace of Champion is 600 GP and gives: Charisma to Saves (take that Sorcadins!), Immunity to Fear, swift action heal 3d6, detect evil at will, smite once (Swift action to gain extra damage on all rolls, which includes spells and presumably ability damage spells too, and charisma mod as a deflection bonus to AC against one foe) doesn't need a UMD check to use Paladin items and because it is a Paladin spell, it's only level 4 (thus taking a 5th level spell slot). You need to be Lawful Good, but "defector" is a cheap backstory that you will be using anyways to explain why you aren't in Razmir territory.

edit: Ahaha! I knew there was a way to get your own CL and ability mod on magic items in PF! When I suggested it as an alternate to a Mystic Theurge, they noticed Cyphermage is good combo, sadly takes 15 int to enter (less of an issue to him being in a 2 man campaign with higher stats.).

Found this while looking through the PFSRD. It's 9th level ability lets it power scrolls/wands with Sorcerer slots one level higher. While you don't get your CL/Stats (I think there is something in PF that lets you use your CL and stats on magic items, may have been Wizard only though), and have to make a UMD check (but you auto beat any UMD check you need on a 1 by level 9 if you don't dump charisma thanks to a boost this class gives.)

While PF doesn't have lots of obscure divine classes to pull from like 3.5 did, Cleric+Domains, Druid, Adept, Paladin (edit:And Anti-Paladin), Ranger and Inquisitor still looks pretty open to abuse. Plus you are a spontaneous archivist with no limit (beyond GP) to spells known (and level 1-4 spells are uber cheep with partially charged wands): Hello tier 1.

Edit: Can this be moved to the minmax section?

Handbook Discussion / Re: Sorcerer Only Spell Handbook?

I think in Dragons of Eberron (or is that Dragons of Fauren?) there are some Dragon only spells (or was it they were only applicable to Dragons? Very fuzzy on them), which are TECHNICALLY Sorcerer only.

Because no one in any of the premade settings has played Sega Saturn.

I know there are builds that can do silly things when throwing opponents (use them to hit every grain of sand in a desert, at epic you can throw them to anything you can see), but can you make them explode?

There was a contest on Giantitp about this once (though it may have had 2 level dips). The winner was a rogue/binder/trapsmith (thats not all, but the levels I remember), plus something with its own divine casting that he used to cast sanctified spells that he healed the ability damage from with the binder dip).

edit: Was actually an IC. He takes 10 levels in the SI, but only 1 level in any other class

I was going to suggest Flail for a melee weapon, but then I checked how it compared to a Morning Star and "what the hell? Why is this martial weapon worse in every way to a simple weapon?".

Anyways, all the ranged inquisitors I have seen start as Cleric 1 and pick up Channel Smite and (more importantly) Guided Hand to remove the need for any dex beyond 13 (for Deadly Aim). If your Deity is alreddy set in stone, it doesn't work. If not for the fact that it appears Pazio editing sucks and he doesn't get the animal domain despite being god of horses with a (winged) horse as a holy symbol (and being PFS, the DM can't use common sense), I'd recommend General Susumu as a patron. He has Favored weapon: Longbow, War domain (thus tactics subdomain, which is great combined with Lookout) and SHOULD have the Animal Domain (thus Feather)...

Zen Archer Monk, potentially multiclassed with (Seeker) Empyreal Sorcerer+Arcane Archer, is the other go-to for PF archery.

"Portents (UM): Ding ding ding!  We have a new loser!  Aside from blood biography (which is totally redundant w/ speak with dead): Every. Single. Spell.  Is. Already. On. Your. List.  W.T.F.?'

You could be generous and assume it was meant for a Words of Power Witch (Oddly enough, bonus spells from Bloodlines, Domains, Mysteries or Patrons are kept and can be cast as standard) because it is also in Ultimate Magic and Witch divination words are lacking.

... and I don't think its very useful even then because most of these wind up redundant with each other and they aren't really good divinations even then. Way to go Pazio! Even when you don't get the spells alreddy this patron is terrible!

edit: Ill Omen is a decent spell to put a wand on to give a familiar, though it requires UMD (and thus not all that any more applicable to you than Sorcerer/Wizard/Any caster with Eldritch Heritage:Arcane beyond being able to create the wand yourself if you or someone you knew ate the feat.). They can't negate the effect even if they recognize it if their action doesn't come between your familiar and you.

Personally I feel that if you wanted t abuse Malconvoker light, (Master) Summoner is the better choice, but whatever. Note there is a trait to boost evil summons HP.

Sage and Empyreal    change your casting stat (to int or wisdom), but they are best used for multiclassing.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Pathfinder Sorcerer

It's debatable if reducing a spell to level 0 makes it infinite-cast, btw.  Some claim that's a special ability only spells labeled as cantrips/orisons get, others state that cantrips/orisons are defined as 0 level spells.

Actually, on that subject, do adepts not get infinite castings of their 0th level spells?

Min/Max 3.x / [PF] best uses for Unsanctioned Knowledge?

It's SotO lite.

Feather Step lets you charge/5 foot step in difficult terrain, when I asked elsewhere, and got the following suggestions

2:Alter Self, Heroism
3: Haste  various save or sucks I don't really agree with (not only does the [Mind-Effecting] on most of them have stuff immune by level 10, you are SAD and behind on the spell level)
4: Dimension Door, Dance of a Hundred Cuts

Any other ideas?

Restless Hunger once a day makes consuming "food (or something a goblin might consider food)" part of a charge. Drink is food and that makes potions such.  A melee alchemist goblin or any melee goblin with an Infusion alchemist in his party loves this.
