Would 2 Favored classes , do anything at all?
« on: September 13, 2013, 03:17:13 PM »
(because ... )

OA and XPH suggest 2 favored classes for a few races.
OA
Dwarf can go Fighter or Samurai.
Elf can go Wizard or WuJen
Gnome can go Wiz-Illusionist or WuJen.
XPH
Duergar can go Fighter or PsyWar.
Githyanki can go Fighter or Psion.
Githzerai can go Monk or Wilder.
Thri-Kreen can go Ranger or Soulknife.

I'm wondering if it would make any difference at all, if a build had both
and was using a 2 Favored Classes houserule?
To trigger the necessity for 2 Favored Classes requires a minimum build:
Class X 3 / Favorite Class A 1 / Favorite Class B 1
Or if you wanted one of the Faves to be the main focus:
Favorite Class A 5 / Favorite Class B 3 or 1 / Class X 1 or 3, but not the same level as B.

Complicating things further with Thrall Of Demogorgon 8 to get all
multiclass penalties waved would allow the above builds with:
... / ToD 8 / and 7 or 3 base class 1 level dips.

 :??? ... Ideas

Due to the fact that it says "or" in there, I'm guessing they meant those races to have a choice of one of their favored classes, but upon choosing they have to stick with it and they lose the other class as favored.

No sure, you're right that "or" means the one or the other one, but not both.
I'm sure that is the r.a.i.

Considering how the multiclassing penalty pops up every now and then,
I'm just wondering if it would make any difference if you could take both of the two.
I mean, there's the basic houserule that handwaves away the mulitclassing penalty.

If there's any middle ground at all ...
say like with 4e you can freely go:
a) ...  hybrid and 1 multi
b) ... pre-nerf Windrise Ports
c) ... Bard
d) ... Chameleon Ppath
e) ... Eternal Seeker epicD

So like a Dwarf that goes:  Pounce Barb 1 / Dungeoncrasher Fighter 6 / OA Samurai 1
is a rather decent build, but would not trigger the 2 Faves.  But this build would trigger it
Rogue 3 / Fighter 1 / Sam 1 , and while sub-optimal might be useful in limited cases.

I'll just say I find the idea of favored classes as a whole silly and a barrier to good character creation and roleplay.

But I suppose some limit would be worthwhile.

The classic frontliner A2 / B2 / C2 / D2 etc build
and absolutely having to do that, kinda sucks.

There is a way to have more than one per RAW. Just means you don't have to keep either of them within 2 levels to avoid the penalty.

The Judged by Aurifar feat from Sandstorm adds cleric as an additional favored class to your character in addition to giving bonuses vs desert saves and +2 vs undead affected by sunlight (like vampires) if you need that for some reason. It does have some role-playing prerequisites, restrictions, and you can permanently lose the benefits if you break faith with Aurifar but could be useful if you need a single level dip of cleric for a good character.

Don't Dragonborn have Fighter as a favored class, in addition to their races' normal one?
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

both interesting

Cagemarrow ... and there's even a Dip Cleric 1 guide.

linklord231 ... huh, so D-borns could go Dragon Racial or Fighter or that Race Specific.

(immediate edit) ... so then one of those Savage Species Rituals, could
qualify you as an Elf subtype and let you take those favorite classes.

Making every class a favored class for everyone doesn't hurt game balance at all.  In my homebrew, I scrap favored classes entirely.

Demogorgon hates you Enda.  Do you really want that?
 ;)

Monk has some multiclassing limits (not that it matters much).

Well maybe only half of Demogorgon hates you,
the other half wants a modified Hood to stab his
other half, so he can get away.  Oops, solved.
Half of Demogorgon now loves you.
