Hellsworn and Abyss-Bound Soul: Which Afterlife Gets it?
« on: January 31, 2018, 12:03:43 AM »
Say a Vile character double-crosses his fiendish patrons, taking both Hellsworn and Abyss-Bound Soul. In the event of that character's death, where does the soul go: the Abyss or the Nine Hells of Baator? Or is there another possibility entirely?

Abyss-Bound Soul simply states your soul become a personal plaything of your chaotic patron while Hellsworn says your soul goes to Baator so you end up going to the one place your soul is told to go. But you should probably avoid using that combo in a game, Baator is full of Devils and they are the Lawful ones that enjoy suffering. They will probably enjoy making you follow all your oaths, including entertaining your patron.

Your soul is stolen by Yugoloths and is kept on the dash next to the hula girl and the cardboard pine tree.

That would be fun to watch. Succubus versus Erinyes would be even better.

Yeah that's kind of a terrible subject in D&D. When you die one of three things will happen. The first is your soul hangs out where it was because it's trapped, maybe you turned undead, or resurrected fast enough nothing else happens. The other two options are merging into the plane of your afterlife in a sort of voluntary suicide of self and the other is becoming a petitioner. For good deities this is a special reward doted on exceptional believers making it pretty subjective on who gets what and as a continued reward they can even bump up their favor and turn into things like beautiful and pure unicorns. For the evil side through, Manual of the Planes is so full of examples of hundreds of petitions in hellish landscapes being tortured and abused against their will that I'm pretty much convinced merging with the plane is a secondary option people are deprived of until their mind collapses into unrecoverable insanity.

So you could go evil to pretty much guarantee becoming a petitioner so they can torment you. But since you'll probably want to end up on the Concordant Outlands so you can travel to other outer planes rather than being locked into one you can't actually sell your soul to a anyone. Pretty much everything is wiped upon becoming a Petitioner to a point wearing armor doesn't even alter your AC and even Boccob's pets are no longer called wizards or clerics so it's pretty dubious if you get to keep spellcasting. As a work around you do get to keep Extraordinary Abilities and the MM5 has a couple of monsters that are granted spellcasting from an Ex ability, otherwise you could try mailing your self some Magic Items when you die.

Go team evil?

Most petitioners lose their skills and feats, which suggests a rather severe form of amnesia. If a smith loses his craft, and a dancer loses his art, and a sage loses his knowledge... are they really themselves, any more? There isn't much promise in becoming a petitioner.

Yep, which is why you should avoid death all together.

I prefer Elan, myself. Or gaining the Endless special quality from Dragon 354. All the eternal life with less of the "I'm a walking corpse" factor.

Yeah but Endless is like good vs evil in a nutshell. Endless is a DM assigned bonus that prevents mental bonuses for a type of stagnation that fears change & progression while a Necropolition wearing a Hat of Disguise and it's associated penalties & bonuses are a path of specialized power that doesn't require any special favors from some kind of grand overseer.

Races like Elans and Warforged are just above the petty concepts of morality ;)

Petitioner is just one stage in the metaphysical recycling process.  Eventually you become nothing but energy.  Petitioner strikes me as the spiritual flipside of the zombie; leftover parts doing a poor impression of what they used to be.

Which is why elan is the way to go, we have punch and pie.

Mud is required.

D&D has always be very meh on afterlife stuff. Just ignore all of it and assign mortals based off alignment.

Character death simply marks the start of the next part of the campaign arc in my groups. not quite Yu Yu Hakusho, but more of a death is just the beginning flavor.

Instead of Yu Yu Hakusho they could die and become swordporn ghost ninja mages like Bleach. :)

Ooooh Bleach wasn't that bad.

It wasn't any better than DragonBall, either... other than the fact that it actually, you know, ended.
