BackgroundCyrus was a rather typical child growing up under atypical circumstances. As a Xeph, he wasn't looked upon with any particular affection by his peers or any of the other closed minds he encountered. He knew, in fact, that the only reason he wasn't being hassled by the watch was because the power inside of him was still dormant. Manifester, Psionicist, Mutant, Freak, and many other words were all synonymous, so for his part he tried his best to make sure that those particular aspects of his nature remained buried.
Not having many friends, Cyrus made a hobby out of exploring what was, perhaps, the safest place worth exploring: the sewers. He would duck and weave around obstacles as he ran through the pipes underground, totally heedless of warnings and forbiddance for the general citizenry to enter. Indeed, there were a few pretty vicious rats in the sewers, but they were ultimately just rats, and Cyrus made sport of hunting them.
It was all pretty tame until he caught wind of something strange that the rat catchers found in the sewer. He wasn't able to pick up any details, but apparently the watch was all over it. Cyrus decided that he would go and check it out himself. He knew which access points the guards were covering, and figured they probably wouldn't cover the ones underground. After crawling through the sewers a while, he eventually found something. It looked like a small section of the sewer had caved in and opened up a tunnel.
Ducking into the tunnel, he cautiously started exploring this new area. He wasn't sure what was down this way, it looked like nobody even knew it existed before the collapse. Eventually he got into a small opening, at one side of which was a strange, glowing crystal formation. He had a strange sensation running through him standing near the crystals, like a tingling starting in his hands and running through his body. Almost as though in a trance, he inched his way towards the crystal. The glow of the crystal intensified slightly but steadily as he approached. Eventually he finally made contact, and the tingling sensation turned into a burning one.
The next thing Cyrus remembered was waking up in a heap on the ground. His head felt heavy and his brain felt like it was on fire. Blood was splattered all over his face, and a drying stream had run down the side of his head while he was unconscious. He then heard the voice for the first time: "Hey, are you awake now? It's about time you woke up! I think someone's coming. With any luck they'll be able to help." Cyrus's first thought was it was probably the watch coming, not anyone friendly. He wasn't supposed to be here, and did his best to hide himself in an out-of-the-way crevice. Without the glowing crystal, they probably wouldn't spot him in there.
It was only after escaping from that situation that Cyrus realized that he was communicating with a voice in his head. Perplexed by his situation, he decided to head up towards the water supply so he could get some clean water to wash his face with. He couldn't go around the surface with blood all over his face. That's when he noticed it for the first time: a fragment of the crystal had embedded itself in his head, like a shining third eye right in the middle of his forehead. "Yes, that's me." the voice in his head responded to Cyrus's reaction.[/i]
For a while Cyrus was able to get around using a cloak to cover his forehead. In addition to a strange gem sticking out of his forehead, Cyrus's psionic abilities had fully awakened. He would hide both as much as he could, but eventually these changes become known to the watch, and he was forced to hide out in the sewers and sneak around town whenever on the surface, avoiding the watch, earning him the moniker of the "Three-Eyed Rat" among the guard and the rat catchers. Despite his best efforts, being caught and exiled was inevitable.
Although more or less mature physically, Cyrus is very young for a traveling Xeph, and has the general appearance of a short, teenage human. His dark, tan skin is only visible on an unassuming face, which hides behind long, black bangs and under the hood of his cloak. For dress, he wears a heavy, quilted tunic with iron rivets spread among them, affording some warmth and some cheap protection. He also wears plain, heavy pants and heavy, leather boots and gloves. Although his tunic is somewhat effective as armor and he also carries a wooden shield, he doesn't carry a visible weapon, and otherwise bears only a partially-filled backpack under his cloak.
Cyrus instinctively hides from everyone and avoids confrontation whenever possible, although he is naturally curious about the world around him. He doesn't let any of these impulses get in the way of what he needs to do to survive, however, so while he is uncomfortable traveling with the party, now that he has been exiled with no source of food he will accept it and be patient for now.
