I played Rifts for years back in the day. I never got a high level character, or a long running campaign though. Sometimes characters would die, but more often a new book would come out and everyone would want to remake as something new and awesome  :lol

a nightmare of micromanagement and hidden rules.
I think that pretty much sums up Rifts mechanically, particularly the skills. :D We mostly ignored the skills aspect of the game entirely, except for putting a few ranks in boxing and athletics, and other things that boosted your combat skill. , and maybe 1 or 2 things that we were interested/thought might be useful. Then again, most of the games we ran were pretty combat heavy. There was some RPing, but most problems were solved by the application of superior firepower.  ;)

i love rifts,

cant really stand to play it :/

i think i stopped buying their books in 93, i think Atlantis might be the last one i got. till then i think i had em all. :pokeball:

a whole system based on concept art, they could have saved a ton of printing money by skipping the rules. just do the art and concepts. would have the same result.

BESM d20 is one of the better systems out there as long as your players are all willing to do 2 things:

1) Whatever happens, roll with it. It's an Anime setting, after all, so you can go ahead and be awesome
2) Agree to reign themselves in whenever they have to

Given those two conditions (which are fairly common among tabletop games anyway, looking at you Paragon Surge Oracle...), it is ridiculously entertaining and has an integral and fairly comprehensive class-creation system (which was their basis for making the ACTUAL classes) for anyone who wants to do something a bit differently.
