Currently mulling about whether I should use the native Fear, Horror & Madness system, or use the opportunity of a major re-write to switch to the
UA Sanity system.
Fear, Horror & Madness:+ fully compatible with existing Ravenloft changes/stats for class features, spells, monsters and so on
0 greatly favours characters with high Will saves
- effects are all or nothing, no gradual attrition serving as a warning sign for withdrawing and/or adding stress as the character resources deplete
- has scaling issues for checks not derived from monsters and encounters, as monster-related DCs scale with HD/CR and Will saves scale with level while other DCs remain static
- proprietary sub-system not freely available
UA Sanity:+ available for free from the SRD
+ tried & true for decades, counting the original use in CoC
+ scales well across all levels also for mundane checks, since it is derived from a pure ability score, not from anything meaningfully progressing with level
+ allows for slow build-up and attrition
0 greatly favours characters with high Wisdom
- necessitates to re-write existing Ravenloft crunch
- wonky with Wisdom scores above 20 (might work better if derived from all mental ability scores?)
