ATLACH
The atlach were the first living creatures to dwell within the Akashic Records, having been created from the primordial Sea of Tama before the kami decided to give themselves physical forms.  The atlach fulfill one of the most important roles within the Records, building and maintaining the bridges that link the Records to the various worlds it comes across.  Within the Records, an atlach is welcome company, but in the outer worlds they are often feared for their monstrous and spider-like appearances.
Personality: Atlach are calm, single-minded, and determined.  Once an atlach starts something, it would take the end of the world to prevent them from finishing it.  At the same time, atlach have a hard time dealing with new things and can get so caught up in their work that they ignore the other things going on around them.  That being said, atlach aren't adverse to breaks, and many great atlach adventures have occurred during one sabbatical or another.
Physical Description: From the waist down an atlach is nothing more than an overly sized spider.  Unlike true spiders, though, atlach only have six legs.  An atlach's spider parts are covered in thick chitinous plating, which itself is covered in short dark hairs, almost like fur.  From the waist up, an atlach is almost entirely human, with only their pitch black eyes separating them from the aforementioned creatures.  Atlach are universally pale, and have straight dark hair matching in color to their 'fur.'  The human part of the atlach is attached to the front of the spider part's cephalothorax.  The area where the spine and cephalothorax meet is hinged, allowing the atlach to walk with its head near the ground or upright like a centaur.
Relations: Atlach are well received by the other races of the Records, but tend to shy away from the inhabitants of the outer worlds.  Atlach themselves can get along with nearly anyone, but have a hard time allying themselves with those who view them as monsters.
Alignment: Atlach, like most of the creatures in the Records, tend towards neutrality.
Atlach Lands: The atlach live mostly in cities on the World End Cliffs, though some atlach live in the City of Marrow.  Few other areas of the Akashic Records boast a large atlach population, as most atlach spend their times on the bridges, and as such live close to the Void of Stars where the bridges are located.  There are no permanent populations of atlach in the outer worlds.
Religion: Atlach, like most of the creatures in the Records, worship the kami.
Language: Atlach, like most of the creatures in the Records, speak Moji.  Atlach player characters and explorers also speak Common.
Names: Atlach names and long and complicated, with last names that reference their ancestors like some sort of tangled family web.  Their first names tend to be short and simple, describing either some trait of the atlach or some trait their parent's would like them to have.  Occasionally, an atlach will take a name based on a bridge they built.
Adventurers: While some atlach adventurers are merely taking a break from their true task of building bridges, there are those atlach who seek a more exciting life.  These atlach adventure to escape from the more cloying aspects of atlach society.  Other atlach adventure on orders from the kami; tasked to explore the new worlds their bridges lead them to.

ATLACH RACIAL TRAITS
  • Monstrous Humanoid Type: Atlach are monstrous humanoids.  As monstrous humanoids, atlach have the following traits.
-- Darkvision out to 60 feet.
  • +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma: While quite intelligent, their monstrous appearance makes them harder to get along with than most.
  • Medium: As Medium creatures, atlach have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
  • Atlach base land speed is 30 feet.  An atlach has a climb speed of 20 feet.
  • Web (Ex): Atlach spin webs both to aid with their bridge building and to live in.  Atlach outside of the Records will occasionally use their webs to catch prey, but this is uncommon.  A single strand of atlach silk is strong enough to support the atlach and one creature of the same size.
An atlach can throw a web as a full-round action.  This is similar to an attack with a net but has a maximum range of 50 feet, with a range increment of 10 feet, and is effective against targets up to one size category larger than the atlach.  An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check (DC 10 + 1/2 HD + Constitution modifier) or burst it with a Strength check (DC 10 + 1/2 HD + Constitution modifier + 4).  Both are standard actions.
Atlach often create sheets of sticky webbing.  They usually position these sheets around their homes or around their work sites.  If hunting, an atlach will position their webs to snare flying creatures or along the ground to snare grazers.  Approaching creatures must succeed on a DC 20 Spot check to notice a web; otherwise they stumble into it and become trapped as though by a successful web attack.  Attempts to escape or burst the webbing gain a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to walk on or grab while pulling free.  Each 5-foot section has 6 hit points and hardness 5.
An atlach can produce up to eight 10-foot squares of web a day.  Throwing a web uses up one 10-foot square.  An atlach can lay two 10-foot sheets of webbing in an hour.
A atlach can move across its own web at its climb speed and can pinpoint the location of any creature touching its web as if it possessed blindsense.  An atlach can only pinpoint the locations of creatures touching her web if she is also touching the web.  An atlach cannot pinpoint a creature touching a section of her web if that web is not connected to the section of the web the atlach is touching.
  • +4 racial bonus on Knowledge (architecture and engineering) checks: The atlach were born to build bridges, and it shows.
  • Automatic Languages: Common and Moji.  Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic).
  • Favored Class: Majo.  A multiclass atlach's majo class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing.
