Aria had missed the bird landing as she was digging through her saddle bags. When she was done, her feathery wing had returned to violet petals. "I'm ready when you are!" she said as she flew back to her new companions. She then spotted the small bird on the ground, "Oh! You found a new friend."

The bird cocked his head and lifted its wings in a pose that was obviously as show of dominance it then turned its head, its neck twisting an unnatural amount to accomidate its contortions, and looked over twords a dune. After a moment a man on horseback emerged from over it going at what looked like a break neck pace. Within a minute the man had reached them and pulled to a halt 20 ft away. " Who goes there and be they friend or foe.  Be warned I shall not tolerate Darkfriends in my presence". The man bore no visible weapons but it was obvious from the confidence that he projected that he felt he would have no troubles were he confronted without one.

As the strange rider approached, Felgryn tightened his fists, in the process making a creaking grinding sound. The air was tense and heavy.

"Who goes there? You've a lot of nerve galloping in to our oasis and demanding to see our traveling papers.  We might ask ye the same thing..."

The man who was speaking was...well not a man, or at least not a living one. The old weather-beaten barbarian, with his horned helm and rich furs was pale and translucent, the very image of a ghost, although his face bore none of the menace such tormented creatures were known for.  Perched upon his shoulder was a mighty gilded greataxe, equally transparent.  Next to him, gazing with a fierce intensity at Thor was an onyx man, marbled with ribbons and veins of gold, and the metal obs that bore into him seemed to barely contain a righteous fury, ready to pounce at the slightest sign of violence.  When he spoke, teeth of gold were made visible and his voice was like the deep rumbling of the earth.

"You had better keep your voice down...unless you want the small army of demons on the other side of those dunes to hear you..."

"Aye, I don't believe darkfriends should really be a concern at the moment, not when there's a massive hoard of demons coming our way." Aria said as she glanced briefly towards the demon hoard.

"All the more reason to invistigate, demons may be simple creature but their allies are not,"  thor stated. "And they are not above trickery to achive their ends. I may be young but I still have experiance dealing with the creatures of the dark" Thors voice grows quiet as he speaks the next lines. " As for me I am Thor Godfist heir to the dragon of dreams' legacy and master of spirits to numurous to count. Who is it that stands before me?"

Felgryn looked pointedly at Magnar.

"What?" the barbarian ghost demanded, looking annoyed.

"Don't you want to do the honors?" the gold-marbled onyx...hairless dwarf (?) replied.

"Bloody damnation! Just for once can't you make your own introduction? I'm not your herald..."

"Well you're always just so flowery and eloquent about it..."

"Sod off."  The ghost folded it's translucent arms over it's translucent chest.

"Very well.  I am Felgryn Grymgold. Fist of the Forest, Champion of Illumiel and her sisters, etc.  The grumpy ghost over there is Magnar.  Don't mind his moodiness, he hasn't eaten for awhile."

"Well over a year now..." the ghost chimed in sullenly.  "I miss me ale..."

"I am Aria and these critters are with me." Aria pointed at the owl perched it the tree and the saddle that was floating nearby, "And because it will probably come up soon anyways, it very easy to mistake me for a demons associate; a few villages already have.  However, I assure you I am not." Aria glanced uneasily towards the demon hoard who, while still a ways off, was steadily getting closer. "In any case, we should get out of here sooner rather than later. We were just about to head into the ether if you wanted to join us."

The demons were slowly (relatively speaking) closing, still unaware of the chance meeting that was taking place in their path...

Thor gave them both a cursory once over with narrowed eyes obviously not compleatly taken in but his stance did soften to a less wary one. "I have been on edge for quite some time now. Prehaps I was to harsh with thee. I would welcome travel companions. Come let us put distance between us and those who would do us harm." Thor starts to move to a safe distance away from the demons (3~4 miles?) to prepare to set up camp.

"As the lass mentioned, we were about to hide in the Ether..would ye care to join us there?"

This question came from the human looking Uthgardt (barbarian) ghost with the great axe.

Aria let out a sigh, "Well Magnar, it looks like he may have some trust issues, so i don't think we should push too hard; let him come at his own pace, y'know?. In any case, we should get going." Aria turned toward Felgryn, "Ready?" She waited for nod from the onyx man then proceeded to do her work.

She concentrated for a moment and large, jet black mandibles burst from her cheeks.  She bit at the air and seemed to tear a hole in space itself. The aftermath looked like a giant lens, just big enough to fit a horse through, that when peered into revealed a reflection of the world, though it was cloudy and washed out.

She called out to Thor "This portal won't stay open long, but if you change your mind simply stand here ask me to open a portal. I'll hear you." Her mandibles retracted as she gave him a warm smile, then stepped into the portal with her floating saddle and her owl.

In spite of his apparent hesitation the newcomer now quickly stepped through the portal after Aria, pulling his horse through after him.

Thor, though intitially hesitant, quickly takes the strange group of allies up on their offer of refuge he steped thorought the portal, more then aware that any company was better then the open sand and angry demons. after a cursory glance arround where the portal had dropt him he turned to his companion and said. Once on the other side of the portal the others could see the hazy outline of Magnar still manifested on the Prime.  A moment later his form and outline crystalized and he seemed, for once, solid.

"Well!  Isn't this a treat!"  He slapped Felgryn on his rocky shoulder. "Finally get a taste of what it's like on the other side..."

Felgryn just looked annoyed.

"I suggest we hide ourselves...Demons of that power may well have ways of detecting or harming us, even here..."

Thor glanced around This is the ethreal plane, no? how is it that you have gained such power over the planes? Thor hesitated for a second before continuing. If we are to travel together then we should learn a bit about the others capablities, I summon spirits and use them to agument my mortal form, currently I can control the air around me to render me invisible or strike at other. My aim is also agumented by another sprit who allows me to strike places that do the most damage. Given a day I can compleatly change my capabilities. How is it that you have come to such an unfriendly place

"Oh, it's not that bad once ye get used to it." Replied Magnar. "Oh! Ye mean the Anauroch?  The Stonechild and I are seeking out a friend of a friend, someone we fear might be in danger."

Felgryn picked up where Magnar left off. "As for capabilities...I tear my enemies to shreds and Magnar here, when he isn't bellyaching over his lack of digestion, sings songs about it.  Again, we need to move...even on the Ethereal plane we shouldn't stay in clear view, just in case."

Felgryn began circling around the path the demons were taking, giving them a wide berth until they could safely track them from the rear without being spotted.

Aria nodded at Felgryn's comment then proceeded to descend about five feet, the ground no longer hindering her movement, "That ought to be cover enough." she said with a grin, "As for what I am capable of, I borrow the natural abilities of creatures I come across whether it be the silent feathers of an owl or the plane rending jaws of an ether scarab. I can only keep them for a day though, so I am fairly dependent on my companions in that regard."

Interesting companions and interesting places, could a man ask for more?  Thor paused for a moment as if considering. Though I could do without the places being so interesting If you catch my drift. Regardless we should attempt to get some sleep, I can take first shift on watch if you wish.

"No need for taking shifts.  You know how people use the expression 'you can sleep when you're dead'?  Well it's a bloody lie.  The dead can't take so much as a catnap's respite. When the time comes for the living to rest I'll take watch.  For now, we have a suspicious band of outsiders to track..."

Magnar certainly was a gregarious ghost, prone to fits of cheer and melancholy alike, a trait of his tribe he shared in life.

As Aria found, in spite of nominally offering no resistance, the ground on a co-existant plane was still opaque. They were now safe from spotters, but could also not see a thing.

I assume it is in our best interest to track the demons, I belive I can help with this. All I need is a second Thors brow furrowed in conectration as he reached out to the bird in from his head. That way! He announced, all we need is to get off this plane....

"This plane is what will help keep us safe." Answered Felgryn.  "Let's just pretend we're Bullete's and keep our heads, well... out of the sand.  As for me, I can burrow just fine on my own though this is faster, but my tremorsense work from here so we'll need to stick to visual reconnaissance..."

Aria peered around while poking her head out of the 'sand'. "It's really hard to see around here." She commented to herself, "Oi Magnar, could you take a peek on the material occasionally?" she requested, "I'm afraid we might miss their passing otherwise with our limited vision."

As they waited in their strange hiding place the demons drew nearer. To those who cared to go close enough to watch, a truly strange sight revealed itself:
In the mids of the horde, the terrible winged, flaming form of the Balor stood out, his whip dancing between the other demons and keeping them on the move.  Then there were various other kinds, from powerful to weaker fodder. But the most striking forms were some non-demons: Five-headed, winged mutant forms, each with two draconic heads, two goat heads and what seemed to be their original head: There was what used to be a troll, and a sleak dog-like desert predator native to this part of Anauroch. There was also a smaller demon that now had those four extra heads, and wings which his normal brethren did not have. These creatures were marching with the demons without resistance.

Felgryn who had been trailing the horde finally caught up with the others after it had passed over them.

"Did anyone else see that?  Several of their captives appear to be Chimerical in nature.  What kind of magic would cause that?  Chimera breed true...but not normally across species lines."

Aria nodded, "Aye, I've never seen anything like it. It's a bit terrifying to be honest."

[future actions if no one has anything else to say]

Aria waited a while for the demon hoard to get some distance, then opened another portal back to the material plane.

As they stepped out of the portal the demons were a while away, continuing on their original trajectory. Their trail was a wide swathe of trampled sand, plainly to be seen. Some firey dots were visible in the distance when they crossed the ridge of a dune. Thor's bird had no trouble finding them.

Felgryn stood within the Ethereal side of the portal glancing out.

"Wouldn't it be more prudent to stay and track them from this side of the great veil?"

"I understand your concern." nodded Aria, "However, with our limited vision within the ether we wouldn't know we were approaching their lair until we were right on top of it. And I'd rather avoid that situation if at all possible, veil or no."

Magnar chimed in.

"Aye, and leastwise in the Anauroch, we're in the desert, easy to see or feel trouble coming.  The ether is far more populated than a desert, and by things drawn towards travelers therein..."

Given the credibility of a ghost on such matters, Felgryn nodded his agreement and stepped back through into the material plane...which was odd considering they were coterminous with each other...stepping back to where you started from.

"Aye, getting a closer look is a better idea then going in half cocked..." Thor muttered.  The bird swooped in for a closer look. Through his link with the bird, Thor counted the enemies. Now that the number was three, Ambush was a significant option. Thor flexed his fist causing the air to swirl and eddy. He was obviously ready for action and holding himself back from simply attempting to destroy that which he deemed evil.

Even for a bird the distance to the structures was a good stretch of flight - they were approximately 40 miles away. The demon troop was marching in a straight line towards them. They seemed pretty carefree, parading their prisoners in front of them, and occasionally applying the whip even to the dominated creatures.

It had to be clear to everyone involved that this was still a very powerful troop of demons. With the three of them, they could probably take on a couple of the intermediate demons. But the leader's aura was crushing even from a distance and viewed via the bird. Their most powerful prisoner was much more powerful than the demons of the kind he used to be, due to this mutation, but the demon leader had snuffed out two of his kind in an instant (as Thor had perceived from hiding), without taking much more than a scratch. This was the awesome power of a Balor, one of the most powerful creatures to roam the abyss, and occasionally walking the prime. As it was, only a supremely organised and executed ambush could have a chance.

"For now my focus in combat is using the air to precisely blast enemies into oblivion... I have other abilities but streaking out from hiding or invisibility are they take time and are usually less effective then a surprise attack. " Thor paused for a second "I am also working on controling a spirit that will allow me to summon demons or other extraplanatar creature to do my bidding."

"Ah, I see..." Aria sighed with a slightly disappointed look. It was fleeting though as she shortly popped back to her usual cheerfulness. "Oh well, my turn then. I usually sneak around invisibly charming my foe's from a range or going in close and stripping them of their magical abilities while hopefully paralyzing them." she paused a moment before continuing, "You should also know that I gain most of my abilities by borrowing essence from my allies, for example I couldn't travel through the ether without borrowing the essence of this one here." She padded one of her saddle bags which bulged and rustled slightly from the touch. "So if any of you have an ability that would be useful to double I can help with that."

"As for what we do, well...I can still carry a rousing tune, while rocks-for-brains here pretty much tears anything to shreds that needs shredding...probably not enough for that Balor though, not to mention all his friends."

"At least I have a brain, and not just empty space between my ears." Retorted the marbled wall that was Felgryn.

"Though I'll admit, I do get a charge your warsongs..."

As the strange group watched from a distance, there was a disturbance in the demon party. They stopped their forward movement, and then the Balor's whip came out and flew among his brethren like streaks of fire, literally whipping them into formation. They seemed to be forming up northward, and whatever threat they were perceiving must have been real, for just a few seconds later, a second Balor appeared. And then over a dune a group of riders appeared, although they were not really riding, they were flying low on huge black mounts, huge lances set to charge. Then puffs of smoke exploded from the mount's nostrils, obscuring them completely for a few seconds before they erupted lances first and drove into the Demon lines. The foremost was immediately tossed from his steed like a puppet, but the others bore on, and with a clash that created tangible shockwaves in the desert sand the lances hit demon hide. First one, then two hit one of the Balor's, and quite suddenly a huge fireball obscured the entire scene. Even as the smoke cleared, not seconds later a second fireball denounced the destruction of the second Balor. The remaining riders (they were missing at least two of their group, but their was no trace of bodies) were encircled by demons (who were also sorely decimated by the blasts), but they calmly disengaged into the air, waited for their comrade to regain his mount, before racing on southward at a breakneck pace.

"I do not know...but they only showed interest in the Balor." Felgryn said stoicly. He likewise surveyed the remaining extraplanar forces still clinging to life after the Balor's meteoric destruction.  He could tell this strange human was thirsty for blood.

The riders were moving at ridiculous speed - they were either driving their mounts to their limits, or indeed they had no limits: Even a cursory peek at the black creatures showed that where there should be flesh, there was only bone. They could run forever, and never tire.

If the bird was going to follow them, it would have to increase its altitude to keep them in view. If it did, it would see them fly southward, while slowly circling towards the east west. And there more of their kind became visible, as rapidly moving black specks in the distance.

As to the remainder of the demon force: the exploding Balors had destroyed a lot of them, basically tearing a 200ft diameter circle of death into their group. Now only a few of the outliers were left. Also, one of the prisoners (the scrawny bird-like demon with five heads) now seemed free, albeit badly injured, while the mutated troll was lying among a dissolving heap of destroyed demons, and slowly regenerating. The other prisoner, the desert predator, was dead. The five-headed demon could be seen surveying the destruction, and poking the troll. The surviving demons were basically running about without coordination at all, not knowing what to do without their commanders.

Aria sat frozen and wide eyed on her mount. She had momentarily flickered in and out of sight, going invisible reflexively, but recovered from the shock shortly although still mumbling something, "What was.. What?...", obviously at a loss for words.

The demon forces are weakened but not destroyed. I feel like we should not leave such trash around. People could be harmed.  Said Thor. He started spinning up his defenses as smoke started to pour from him body, obscuring his features.

The demons didn't - from the distance - seem too capable of putting up any kind of fight at this point. They mainly milled about, aimlessly, shying away from their former prisoner. When one did approach him(although one could only guess the sex with these scrawny bird demons), he got badly clawed up and bitten within seconds, and retreated back into the relative safety of the leaderless group.

The mutated demon began dragging the incapacitated mutated Troll away. He was apparently quite intent on not leaving anyone behind.

Aria regained her composure and nodded. "Yes, finishing them off would be a good idea. However, it would also be a good idea to at least attempt to talk to those strange ones; I have a feeling they are not all bad." Aria said, eying the demon who was apparently helping a friend. "That behavior seems very uncharacteristic for a demon."

The demons slowly began organising themselves, slightly. They gathered together in a small group - small was all that was left. There were two small black demons of roughly humanoid shape with long claws, dripping acid on the ground, a scrawny bird not unlike what the mutant must have looked like, and a massively muscular large demon with a huge gaping maw. They seemed to be discussing their course of action from there - and seemed to be ignoring the mutant who was dragging his unconscious compatriot northward through the sand.

Aria and co. walked towards the remaining demons discussing they're strategy. When they had come within a mile of the hoard Aria guided her animal companions behind a dune to wait out the battle.

After dropping off the animals Aria turned to Thor "I'm not bringing the portal with me so if they see us come back here."

With that Aria faded out of view.

"Got to love a good pixie. Thor muttered with a smile, "I wonder if she is single"
Thor's smile then changed, warping and stretching until it was no longer human. He had taken the form of a Phaerlock with the magic of his ancestors. Moving as close to the demons as he could Thor paused for a second to concentrate before sliding into sightlessness. Thor moved slowly and silently towards a demon who was both close and powerful (e.g. a target worth taking out).

As Thor approached his target - the strongest demon and probably most valuable target - his nose suddenly met a vile stench, which tugged at his intestines instantly, enough to make him puke out-right. Aria was saved from the stench by flying above the group, and Magnar was obviously unaffected on the ethereal plane.

It also seemed like their invisibility was not penetrated - noone reacted to the approach. Thor could not find any serious shadows - the only shadows were produced by the demons themselves, and due to the time of day these were not long.

The strangest thing happened then...the Babau, in it's normal voice, began singing.  This would have been odd enough, for the foul fiend's voice was a burbling sickening sound, but moreover the creature seemed to be boistrous, prancing around it's fellows.  The language was strange as well..nothing like any demon tongue, but thick and heavily accented.  As the words sunk into Aria and Thor, they felt themselves filled with holy power, stronger, filled with courage and a holy mandate to strike down all the enemies of good.

Before any of the other demons could react however, there was a tremendous eruption as Felgryn burst from the sand...only the onyx man had changed.  His face had transformed into that of a mighty lion, still with eyes of molten gold, and his golden metal teeth and claws had elongated into the fangs and talons.  Intricate veins of gold still crisscrossed the glassy darkness of his body, yet now from those cracks a glowing golden ice had formed, jagged edges giving the illusion of stylized hair along his forearms and shins, as well as a magnificent jagged icemane.  The mighty fist of the forest roared a terrible battle cry and exploded into a whirling engine of destruction and carnage.

Aria, seeing the signal, cast a spell and quickly charged at the winged demon. This was the obvious choice as it seemed her companions would not fare well if the fight went to the air. She darted in, zooming through the air only inches away from the demons skin, making precise strikes all the while.

Felgryn popped out of hiding, and within instants vanished in a literal cloud of blood and guts. When he was done the once proud Hezrou lay spattered and slowly dissolving in the sand.

Aria's tiny form began raping the birdlike demon, and every attack soundly connected. When she was done, the Vrock was reeling, bleeding from many cuts, and paralyzed in place.

Thor's airblasts likewise connected on the smaller demon. The Babau reeled after two shots, and collapsed in a heap after the second blast, just barely breathing.

Aria looked up after Thor finished the husk she had prepared for him and spotted the pair of mutants struggling to get away. She immediately zipped towards them as fast as she could. As she sped towards them she noticed something strange. Was she seeing a demon helping someone. It didn't even matter to her that the demon was helping another demon. Demons, to her understanding, were beings of pure evil, incapable of such kindnesses. But maybe, just maybe, these particular creatures had somehow obtained some sliver of goodness in whatever horrible things had been done to them. When she closed the gap she channeled the magics within her and said "You don't have to be afraid; we can help you".

The hybrid creature stared at the stone man with many eyes.
'If you want to help find her... well, you must know, it always happens at night. You mustn't resist, or else you will never find her. But then eventually you might hear her call. She will give you great power, like she gave us.'

"I think I'm just fine with the power I have, thanks."  Felgryn replied.  Whatever these things were...they were no longer part of nature.

Magnar caught Felgryn's eye and picked up his unspoken concern.

"Aye, well if'n we can't be helping ye, ye best be on yer way.  Good luck'n finding yer ma."  the ghostly bard sang (having relinquished the now-dead demon's body).

The creature cackled in disbelief, even as its compatriot on the ground was beginning to stir. Deep down it was still a demon, and it knew that basically ANYTHING was best kicked when down.
'Very wise, MOTHER will be happy', it crooned, but there was no gratitude there, only glee. 'Maybe one day you will hear her call, after all.'

The mutant troll began to groan and snort, before quite suddenly raising its heads and staring up a the congregation. Then it roared, jumped on its feet, and was just about to throw itself on Felgryn, but its smarter compatriot grappled it from behind and held it in place, snarling. Eventually, the scuffle subsided.
'We will be going', the chimeric demon said, finally. The strange pair shuffled off through the sand, occasionally hopping wing powered jumps, but not actually taking to the air for fear of being rediscovered by anything less benevolent.

The farther away they are the more difficult it is to track them from the air. So far it has been a breeze but I am worried that they will try to shake any tails before reaching their lair. It is interesting though that they the mutant demon has not simply teleported their. It would suggest that either they possess a type of comradeship uncommon among the creatures of the lower plain or that its mutation has rendered it incapable of that act.

Magnar had no problems keeping up with the mutants. He was getting rather far away from the rest of the group, though, and getting back would take almost the same time as getting there, unless they followed after the mutants from a distance - in which case he had to hope to find them again, seeing as at least some were just as capable of sustained invisibility as he was. (Admittedly Felgryn should be easy to find. (?))
