Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / [3.P] Making spell levels matter more
« on: March 12, 2017, 07:46:44 AM »
Spells have no effect on spells of higher level.
For example, you have an illusion spell of 4th level. It won't be revealed as illusion by a divination spell of lower level (even if normally, by RAW, it says it reveals any illusion).
An equal level divination spell can reveal it if the caster is of a higher CL.
Using a higher level spell slot to cast a lower level divination spell doesn't count. Applying metamagic to the divination spell to make it use a higher level slot also doesn't count. Heightening the divination spell's level by using Heighten Spell, does.
What's your opinion?

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / [3.P] Bonuses for higher equip load
« on: March 12, 2017, 07:32:19 AM »
Basically when you carry the weight equivalent of a bigger creature you count as that size for Special Size Modifier, Size Modifier to Fly and Size Modifier to Stealth. My reasoning is that those bonuses/penalties come less from the creature's size and more from its weight.
What do you think?

Min/Max 3.x / [3.P] Preventing death and disablement
« on: July 16, 2016, 11:15:43 AM »
Is there some fairly easy way to:
- not die when your hp drops below a negative amount equal to your Constitution score
- still be fully capable even when disabled or dying (or rather, preventing your character from becoming disabled or dying even when below positive hp)?
- alternatively, to prevent your character from going below positive hp?
I'm asking because I'm working on homebrewing a feat that gives bonuses based on on your character's missing hp and would like to know some good combos.

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Feats for Attributes
« on: July 04, 2016, 12:38:03 PM »
I'd like to allow players getting higher Attributes by using feats, but I'm not sure how much should they give. Plus, there's two options of how to do it - a straight +X to a stat OR +X to your pointbuy pool (I houseruled that you don't gain a normal +1 per four levels, but instead you gain +1 pointbuy every level) - and I don't know which would be better as a feat.

I'm considering making a houserule where a character would gain an extra standard action whenever he would get an iterative. So for example with full BaB you would get one at 6, 11 and 16 BaB. Obviously only BaB from classes would count.
What are the pros and cons of this? What are the interactions with other rules and abilities (good or bad) you foresee?
Of course some tweaking would be needed to not make it too abusable. For example if you use a standard action you can't perform a full-round action, even though you still have a move and standard available. Or in case of higher levels you can't convert two extra standards into an extra full-round. Things like that.
Also, with those two restrictions from above, how do you think does this look compared to a full attack? Is it strictly better? Worse? On par (given all of the "full attack only" options there are)?

Gaming Advice / [3.P] Stats revealing spells/abilities?
« on: February 27, 2016, 04:37:49 PM »
I'm wondering what spells or abilities are there that would tell me the stats of a specific creature.

Gaming Advice / [3.P] Half-centaurs?
« on: February 17, 2016, 08:40:41 PM »
I'm looking for a half-centaur template (for male centaur/female creature crossbreeds, primarly humanoids; preferably one that doesn't make the base creature quadruped).
I know of decataurs.
Also, I'd like to make some variants of centaurs where a female centaur has a child with a humanoid male. Any suggestions for small changes that won't change the CR, but will make the centaur a bit more interesting or different, dependant on what humanoid race was the father? I can only think of modifying their racial ability score adjustments, which isn't very creative.

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / To-hit - Dex instead of Str
« on: January 05, 2016, 09:10:58 PM »
What effect would this houserule have on the game, other than making Dex too loaded?
Also, what could potentially be added to Str as a replacement?

I'm thinking about adding a homebrew feat that would allow scoring crits on objects and crit-immune creatures. That would also allow performing Coup de Grace actions on them. One of the feat's prereqs will most probably be a fairly high number of Perception ranks. The feat will also probably be part of a feat chain that gives other, related bonuses and options.
My question is, what level do you think would be appropriate for such a feat to become available, considering that it will probably have a cost of ranks and 1 or 2 feats?

I'm thinkning about implementing the following houserule to Leadership (I'm having trouble finding the right words to explain the rule, sorry if the following is hard to understand):
You can gain higher level followers by giving up lower level followers. 1 follower costs 2 followers of previous level. You can convert as many followers as you like in this way, but you can't gain followers of higher level than the maximum your Leadership score allows. You can also do the reverse, giving up a higher level follower for 2 followers of previous level.
For example:
A character with Leadership score of 17 could, after converting all available followers to the highest level, gain 5 additional 4th level followers, but then he would be able to attract only up to 6 4th level followers. Conversely, the character could covert all higher level followers into 18 additional 1st level followers.

The houserule is intended to make followers more useful, allowing the player to have a smaller retinue that can be helpful to a higher level party while not overpowering the group too much.

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Magic weapons for TWFing
« on: December 17, 2015, 07:23:59 AM »
A while ago I suggested a rule that let a TWFer transfer some of his primary weapon's magic into his secondary weapon, partialy fixing the problem with TWFing being costly due to having to buy multiple magic weapons. Now I came up with a different rule that, I think, is better.
When creating a magic weapon you can choose to make two weapons be "bonded" together, in which case you only pay as if you enhanced one weapon, but both would get the benefits, but only when you wielded them both in combat.
So, on one hand, you get two magic weapons for the price of one. OTOH, you're forced into TWFing and you're screwed if for some reason you can't TWF.

Gaming Advice / [3.P] Unarmed Strike Power Attack?
« on: December 11, 2015, 02:55:49 AM »
Is there some way to apply Power Attack to Unarmed Strikes?

I'd like to hear your opinions on what prices should the following custom magic items have:
- CL 19 1/day item of Giant Size (spell from Complete Arcane)
- CL 19 1/day item of Minute Form (spell from Complete Arcane)
- CL 20 1/day item of Body Outside Body (spell from Complete Arcane)

Min/Max 3.x / Extreme Dexterity (& Intelligence)
« on: December 08, 2015, 05:58:46 AM »
I'm making a character that's going to be extremely Dextrous and Intelligent. He's going to be gestalted, witch a powerful race and templates on one side of the gestalt and class levels on the other. I need suggestions for said race and templates. It was easy to make an extremely Strong and Tough character, but it's harder to find stuff with good Dex and Int.
Here are the requirements, limitations and houserules:
- 20 CR
- can't be smaller than Small or bigger than Large
- you can ignore template requirements for size, type, alignment or the like
- race and templates can be anything as long as it's humanoid in appearance or can be refluffed relatively easly as such
- high Dex and Int are a priority, but other stuff is welcome
- no same template stacking, unless it's specifically allowed by its rules

Probably missed something.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / ToB vs. PoW
« on: December 08, 2015, 05:40:18 AM »
How much better is PoW compared to ToB, balance- or option-wise?
Also, for those that want to make the transition from ToB to PoW, but aren't sure if their favored options are still there, could someone explain what from ToB became what in PoW?
Conversely, is there anything in ToB that was missed when they made PoW?

Gaming Advice / [3.P] Movement as teleportation?
« on: November 18, 2015, 01:37:46 AM »
My goal is to activate full attacks from Shadowlord's Shadow Pounce through movement from Combat Patrol feat or Warder's Defensive Focus ability. Is there some way to make movement into teleportation?

Gaming Advice / [3.P] Super-heavy?
« on: November 15, 2015, 06:30:35 AM »
I need to make something rather small sized and normally quite light to become extremely heavy. I mean something like an article of clothing or a small/medium object. Are there any ways to do that? Preferably permanently, or at least for a very long time.

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Strength and throwing
« on: November 07, 2015, 09:25:26 PM »
I wanted for Str to matter for how far you can throw things, so I thought about it a bit and this is what I came up with:
At 10 Str you can throw a weapon to a maximum of 5x the weapon's range, just like normal.
If you have a below average Str your maximum throwng range decreases. At 9-8 Str you only throw 4x the weapon's range; at 7-6 Str - 3x; at 5-4 Str - 2x; at 3-2 Str - only up to the weapon's range; 1 Str - if you can even hold something you can at best drop it; 0 Str - you know what that means.
Now to the good part of this houerule.
A higher than average Str increases your maximum throwing range. You can throw up to an additional number of range increments equal to your Str's mod.
For example a character with 12 Str throwing a dagger (10 ft. range) can throw it up to a maximum range of 60 ft.
The same character with 18 Str could throw the dagger up to 90 ft.
Of course, all penalties to hit still apply and accumulate the further you throw.

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / Haste houserule - extra move action
« on: November 03, 2015, 08:50:10 PM »
I'm thinking about making Haste give an extra move action instead of the speed bonus. It just makes more sense to me. Any bad things it could cause?

Legends of the Heroes / A big mansion's staff
« on: October 11, 2015, 08:32:54 PM »
What kind of servants would a huge mansion belonging to a big and rich famly have? I know there's maids, butlers, guards and gardeners. What else?
